RE: Yellow Aircraft F 18 Hornet Twin Build
The only experience I have with this type of spar receiver is an f-15 which had over 500 flights. It seemed like the threads in the blocks were getting loose and I had to file the edges of the spars a couple times so they would slide in easier. Other than that, they did hold up fine. Only difference was that was a 25 lb plane, this one looks closer to 50.
Lou V. has the same set up on his bug. It doesn't have more than 75 flights and they are already getting loose. We will see how effective this mod is. Good thing about it since it's all bolt on.......doesn't work, just yank it

Hi Billy,
I like the look of the mod and will probably do something similar to mine. I have just received the ARF version. How do you plan to attach the spar extension to the main spar? Countersunk machine screws with red locktite? I will probably round the angle on the "C-shaped doubler" immediately adjacent to the horizontal plate over the inlet to minimize stress concentration at that point which is already where it would be at its weakest. Your thoughts?
Kind regards,
Craig.

In regard to the pipe fit I had no problems with fitting an Olympus spec bi-furcated Tam pipe into my ARF bug.... its a tight fit yes but it will go with removal of the bellmouth plus some patience and then a little swearing...(not necessarily in that order). Tweeked 40 lb Merlin for my bird and she's currently getting painted in 20th Anniversary RAAF hornet colours

Vacman,
The F-18 ARFs are custom-order. You can talk directly to charles about it, or I would be happy to take care of it for you. They cost a bit less through me than direct.

I don't think our mods are only for the ARF guys, so if you don't like some helpful advise to keep these birds strong, don't read the thread. What where doing is only going to make them stronger, ARf or kit. My idea is just that. There are many other ways of doing it. I'm just adding to the pot what I know.

Billy,
That's not what I was talking about. The original idea of starting the thread was to hear about exactly this kind of thing you're bringing into it. What I was talking about was a lot of the idle chatter that forms around the actual informative posts. That wasn't directed at you specifically, but I'm sure you can respect what I'm asking. I know you've seen threads where there's 90% chit-chat for the 10% of the stuff you're showing.

Mounting the motor and I have a question. Should I push the motor all the way up till it just about touches the intake or should I leave a little room. I'm worried that being too close might create some kind of cavitation of sorts. What do you guys think. There still is a about a 1/2 till the starter motor hits the Y center of the intake. Oh and I know I still need to space it it up about a 1/2 inch too.

Billy,
The instructions I have from Yellow on the latest version of the kit say to leave 1" of space between the case of the turbine and the inlet lip. This is set up to clear the bypass (P-180 installation).

I am going to start building an ARF kit but I have no manual or any reference on where to srart. Coul you help me un finding one?
I have been looking in the net but just there insn't any out there. Exs.: The pokets of the aileron servos couldn't take the Futsba's 9157, and not sure if I can use a futaba BLS153 Brushless Mini with 97oz. of torque?
Than you

I have the ARF also. The largest servo that I know that will fit due to depth is a JR 8411,. 155 oz-in @ 4.8V, 188 oz-in @ 6V
Speed: .18 sec/60° @ 4.8V, .15 sec/60° @ 6V
Length: 1.54 in
Width: 0.75 in Height: 1.36 in
Since Im running All JR HV servos the 8911 HV is .82 in width which wont fit, but i designed in cad a new hatch cover that is cnc to allow servo case to fit flush with top surface of the servo cover. I will cnc the cover plate fron 1/16 carbon fiber plate and cover the plate to hide the servo with .005 G10. Ill bevel the edges of the G10 so it wont protrude below wing skin where the cover meets the skin. This should be way stronger than the ply servo hatch cover, even with part of it machined away for the servo
