Here I am using my drawings to layout the camo with the 3M soft edge tape.

Hi Dom,
I've never used the soft tape for masking before. Where can you get the tape?

Thanks

Doane

You buy it the automotive paint store. They use it when painting door jams.
Well I am headed out to the garage now to spray the medium blue. I'll take pics later tonight when I bring the model back into the shop.

I just finished spraying the Medium Blue.....it looks amazing!!! It will be at least 2 hours before I can bring her in the shop so I will take some pics when I do. My plan is to let her dry all day Saturday (I'm hoping to fly my Cessna) and then mask and spray the final Dark Blue on Sunday. Then I can take the tape off and see what I have.

Hey Dom, I took 15 minutes and whipped up a Low Viz Star & Bar for you to use with the water slide decal paper, let me know the size you need.

Here she is with all the tape off. I was a bit taken back by the look...not exactly what I expected but then I realized that the paint is fairly shiny right now and that is throwing off the look a bit. You can see in the last pic that I hit the surface with 1000 grit wet paper and it dulled right up. I am going to fully weather the jet, add decals then give it a flat clear coat. I think that the added dimension that the nomenclature, markings and weathering and finally flat clear coat will enhance the look.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I still need to mask of the nose cone and the nose cone of each tip tank for the application of flat black.

Well I just returned to the shop. Today’s first impression of the jet is WOW....this is going to be cool with all the weathering and detail. Rich did you get my e-mail regarding the start and bar sizes? I think that the star and bar needs to be ½ the size of the ones that you have three per page. All of these markings will be black please except the Soviet star and nose numbers. Also after you lay them out on a page, if there is room then I will tell you about some lettering and numbers I need. Thinks like NAVY and some serial numbers. I can do these in word, but I want to get the most info on each sheet of decal paper so I don’t waste any. I have already produced all the other small nomenclature that I need. So if there is room after, then let me know. OK Rich here are some initial dimensions. I will print them on plain paper and size them to the jet to confirm but lets start here:

Star and bars (2 per sheet) of the exact size shown on the 3 per page sample

Star and Bars (2 per sheet) ½ the size shown on the 3 per page sample

Ejection triangle (2 per sheet) ~ 3/4" each side

Rescue arrow (2 per sheet) ~ 2 1/4" overall length with width proportional as required

Red star with yellow border (2 per sheet) ~ 2" overall height and 2" overall width

Nose Number 05 (2 per sheet) ~ 2" tall by 2" wide....this is the overall height and width of the two numbers together beside each other…as in one decal.

Thanks Rich!!

Why would you put a Soviet Star on the plane along with Stars and Bars and "NAVY"? Surely that can't be correct.
