RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
I am now working on the pipe/turbine installation. I like open systems (no bypass) so I needed a bellmouth for the Fei Bao pipe. I called Tam and the smallest one he had was 3". The bellmouth tapers down so 3" is the smallest diameter of the bellmouth. The inside of the pipe is about 2 7/8" so I had a problem. I decided to buy the bellmouth anyway and make it fit. I used my dremel and cut into the bellmouth removing about 1/2" of material. I then carefully filed both ends so they fit tight when closed together. I then mounted the bellmouth to the pipe by drilling holes for 2-56 screws and nuts. It looks pretty good. The pipe looks a bit small so I hope it does not choke the life out of my P-70. I know at least one of you have put a P-70 in your L-39. Did you use the stock pipe?

MW, I agree on pipe, as I have a Balsa Bandit P-70 pipe and compared! Looks little on the exhaust dia.. Will see. Waiting for bypass from Wagner, to continue. Did you understand what the, about 1/2 in. wood rails with J-Cat stamped on them, are for? Were having fun now! Yes! WHMC

You guys have got me hooked on one of these.
I have emailed Wagner about prices for getting one to the UK. I must say they are quite reasonable. My only problem is which colour scheme to go for? Has anyone got pic's of the camo scheme.
Also I have a P80 will this be to much, should I go P70 (I fly from a 200ft grass strip).

The blocks are definitely to raise the mounting location for the Jetcat turbine mounting strap. I will have install pics this weekend. A P-80 would fit with some modification, but a P-70 is a much better choice here. A 200' grass strip sounds like a challenge to me. It is a very nice kit so I would recommend it.

I finished the Turbine and pipe installation. I did not use the blocks that came with the kit for my installation. I found them to be too tall. I used 1/4" ply. I had to remove much of the intake to get clearance for the fod screen. The turbine is mounted with four 6/32 socket head screws and blind nuts. I will also use washers, lock washers and locktite during final assembly. I found it necessary to make a bulkhead for the pipe just behind the front and also to add a ply ring in the rear. The hole in the back was way too large (also the rear ring establishes the proper thrust line) and without a bulkhead upfront, the pipe will drift easily if it is just secured with the stainless straps. I added a block under the servo mounts for my straps and screws. The pipe is now secure up front and in the rear and is very solid with no drift. I am wondering if I should enlarge the holes in the bulkhead that I built and the rear ring just a bit to account for expansion of the pipe when it heats up. Any thoughts? Tomorrow I will run the rudder and elevator leads and apply BVM Heat Blanket and aluminum tape around the fuse in the area of the turbine / pipe gap.

I should be building but is up to 32 degrees F here in New York so I am going out to test another one of my Futaba R6014FS 14 ch 2.4 ghz receivers. Todays receiver will be the one that goes in this L-39. I will get this test out of the way now so when I do install it in the jet I wont have to take it back out. So far my 12 ch FASST system has been perfect!! I am working all the switches during each flight like I would for my jets even though my test bed does not have things like flaps brakes, retracts and such. I am trying to develop muscle memory while getting used to the new transmitter. I should have it nailed by the time I actually fly one of my jets.

Boy, they couldn't have picked a worse place for those two servos!!
The circumference of the pipe will expand quite a bit when it is hot. The pipe on our 22 flops around a bit when it is cold, but it is jambed up tight against the plywood when it is hot....

I finished the final installation of my P-70 and pipe. I decided to take everyone’s advice and shield those elevator servos. First I boxed in the bottom of the servos with 3/32" ply. I then routed my rudder and elevator servo extensions and insulated them with BVM Heat Blanket and Aluminum tape. I did the same for the area on the sides and bottom of the fuse in the location of the pipe gap. Finally I made a heat shield out of some thin tin to help protect the top half of the servos. I think it came out nice. I also painted the rear section of the fuse white. I could not take looking at that bare wood any longer.
