RE: JMP? Starfire need CG pics posted Att. Yellowaircraft
I have my flaps set for 20 degrees on the second position of a three position switch. The third position the flaps deploy 30 degrees and the evelator drops down 1/8 of an inch. this seems to work good.....at least for the first two flights today. I think I had the engine set a little rich because it wasn't necessary to use the in-flight mixture control through the entire flight. Good smoke but the flight lasted only about 6 or 7 minutes so I am sure it was running a little rich. Even with that, the speed is very fast and I'm looking for the 180 to 190 range.

Chris, I didn't use any flaps for takeoff. I would guess about 200 feet needed for liftoff. This wasn't a problem since the runway we were using today is 3200 ft. long. and 80 ft. wide. great place to test a new plane.

That was in response to Grbakers comment about 40-45 degrees. I'd agree they aren't strictly needed flying from pavement, I find the plane rotates a little easier and sooner when flying from grass with that first notch of flap.

Just got back from the field!!WOW what a great jet to fly lands slower than a trainer plane, not as fast as i wanted but good enough. i used full flaps for landing no trim change[sm=thumbup.gif]. stright and level about 140. Ok what do i use to remove the old paint from the fuselage, the flying surfaces are easy i pulled on a piece and off it came. From what i can tell this jet has two to three colors on it. It is white green blue and yellow, and finaly blue againQ[X(] maybe thats were the extra pound of two are from[:-]

Sandpaper? Good luck
I've heard of guys using paint stripper but never done that myself...
Oh yeah, congrats on the successful flight

Congrats on the flight. The more you fly it the more you will like it. One of my Starfire IIs was clocked at 191 MPH out of a high split S using the JPO speed trap gear (back when jet meets had speed runs)
I have a JMP Starfire II kit that I thought I was going to build for MW44 power, but I've kinda lost interest.

Hi,
Congrats! As for the speed, are any of your control surfaces trimmed in a deflected position? I found that a few clicks of aileron trim to counter an out-of-trim rudder can kill a TON of speed on a Starfire. Same goes for any other trim....

Use a bunch of razor blades to scrape off the old paint. I found it a lot eaiser than sanding. After removing all the old paint and getting the fuse down to the original primer, I put on a new coat of primer and then use wet and dry paper, 350 grit to remove all the primer. Then I used spot glazing putty to fill all the pin holes and now its ready for the finished coat of paint.

The version of Starfire you have was not really engineered for removeable wings, the rear spar set is going to be a problem as there is no meat back there to secure the spars in the wing. The front brackets are attaching to a thin former which is probably too thin for the loads involved when you take away the glassed wing - fuse joint.

Mickey Edmonds used to run his Starfire through the traps at 215 back in the early 90's with a BVM .91 and a re-pitched ramtec or dynamax fan

You know, Mickey was the only one that I knew that could do it personally.
He would do my Ramtec's in his shop.
He doesn't own A-1 Hobby's anymore but he still posts on here.
"Jetdriver" is his handle on here drop him a note
