RE: Skymaster plus 1:5.5 BAE Hawk
John - I don't want to turn this into a Skymaster bash thread, but I have to agree with you on several points. It was totally obvious to me that this ARF is being sold knowing that certain things will require substantial re-work. The elevator set up as SM says to do it will not work without burning up your servos in the heat, the fuel tanks will not draw if the plane is inverted so I had to completely re-do them, now the oleos bottom out with almost no downward pressure and easily will break off the main doors. All little things but all things that needed to be changed even on the SM prototypes before they were airworthy. At a minimum SM should inform buyers of the changes that are required. I realize that SM is no where near the quality level of BVM, but they are not the cheapest guy out there anymore and the other mfg’s knock off’s are just about as good at a much better price.

RE: Skymaster plus 1:5.5 BAE Hawk
Well the maiden flight is in the books; sorry to say that I bagged out of doing it and had a friend at the GA Jets club do it for me (thanks Mike). Perhaps a good thing, as I had the elevator incidence set to 0 degrees and once airborne he had to max out the up trim on the 10X. So the first few minutes of the flight were a little hairy to say the least. Even with the trim maxed out, he still needed to hold just a bit of up in her throughout the flight and landing. I balanced it right at the 180mm position that SM recommended and that seemed to be just right. Only one click of aileron was needed. The trim issue combined with a strong late afternoon sun kept the flight to about 5 minutes of high circles and two landing attempts. The landing was a bit hot, and as I had the brakes tied to down elevator he let it go into the grass, both the main gear blocks broke loose but it’s an easy fix. Looking at the blocks it was easy to see why they broke so easily, there was almost no glue holding them in place. A good bit of Hysol on the gear blocks, resetting the center point on the elevator and changing the brakes to one of the sliders will have the Hawk ready for flight again in a few days. The only other note, the scheme shows up well in the air but with the Eagle it gets away quick and it not a large plane by any means.

jclittle,
Could you check your elevator incidence now that you trimmed for level flight and let us know where you are relative to the wing. I have mine set at -1.5 degrees. this gives me more up than you sarted with but would like to know if it is enough or to much.
Also did you use flaps and was there pitch changes that where unexpected?
Scott

Dennis - do you mean am I locking the canopy down with a 3rd method? I'm just doing what came with the plane, the two pegs in the front and the one hatch latch. Seems to work fine.

Yes I was wanting a third fixing in the middle. I just watched a video of the Skymaster Hawk and the canopy ejected in flight. I also had this happen to my small AMD Hawk so I am a little paranoid on this one. I think I might just use an elastic band on the bottom of the cockpit tray fixed to the floor of the servo tray

Wing Fences
I know that wing fences ona Hawk help to prevent tip stalls on slow landings. I dont seem to have them on my earlier Skymaster T45 and was wondering if any of you have them
Also e mail skymaster about new oleo springs today and they said they would post them ASAP.......... Seems like a good service to me

Dennis,
I suspect that the suction of the canopy is quite large, and that an elastic band is only the equivalent of a 'comfort blanket'. If you are really worried then you need to provide proper locking such as 2/3mm bolts through the canopy into the fuselage side rails. Security of the canopy is more important than scale effect; so make sure that the canopy does not come off, and then worry about the fittings showing.
