Maj. Woody's new trailer
Well I finished my trailer. It is a Haulmark Transport DLX V Nose 5 x 8. Thanks for all the help and tips. As you can see I have used most of the ideas that you guys provided. I started by adding 1/2" plywood to the trailer walls. I applied this directly over the factory luan and screwed the ply into the steel studs. Next I painted everything. E-Track was next followed by my shelving. I left room on either side of the bottom shelf for equipment. You can see that I have also added 2 x 4 blockades to keep my fuel and batteries in position. I ripped some 2 x 2s and screwed these to the floor to create a box in which to mount my flight box and Jersey Modeler can. Eye hooks and Bungee provide extra security. I went to a local fire supply store and purchased quick release fire extinguisher mounts. These hold the extinguishers securely during transport but can be released in a second when needed. The shelves are made of 2 x 4s and 1/2" plywood. I secured double sided (hook on one side loop on the other) Velcro straps to the shelves with number 10 screws and washers. Position the Velcro so that when strapping the model down the fuzzy side touches the model. This will protect the finish. I purchased some 2" foam from a local foam supplier. It was actually a queen size mattress pad. You can get this in utility or standard density. The standard is a much higher density and very shock resistant. It is almost like foam rubber. After marking the foam for the location of the Velcro straps I used my soldering iron to burn the slots which the straps pass through. The foam is not glued to the shelf but is very grippy and when the model is strapped down nothing moves. The top shelf has several strap locations giving the flexibility to put three jets up top or wings on either side of a centrally located jet. I took this on a 400 mile round trip to the field yesterday and nothing moved a millimeter!! The added weight of all the wood and equipment really improved the ride quality and handling of the trailer. Some roads were very bumpy and my jets rode in comfort atop that foam. Absolutely no damage at all. I am sure I will continue to add things inside as I become more familiar with the trailer this season but I am very happy so far. I have an explorer sport with a 4.0L SOHC engine and I managed 15.5 MPG at 65 MPH. Not bad.

Great job...but I would put the holding strap higher up on the large water bottle.. or maybe another strap higher up.. Looks like it could jump out and kill the pilot) Just thinking how bumpy some roads are.

RE: Maj. Woody's new trailer
Ordered my trailer today. 6x10 interstate. Any of you use the E track? I want to use vertical e track on one side and make shelves to hold the planes. My question is, if I put supports on either side of the bracket that touch the side of the wall, will this be enough to keep the shelf from moving forward and backward? Love to keep from going all the way across the trailer.
Thanks
