Euro Sport 1 Servo Or 2 On Elevons
Guys,
I love the Euro sport Jet as a everyday flyer. I have Many and have just experienced A bad situation. On my brand new Euro Jolly Roger I had about 10 flights on it when 1 8711 servo failed on the right elevon. The failer occured at take off. I am sure you can tell what happened next. So the question is how many people have split the elevon and installed 2 servos verses 1. Thanks for your input.

I am completing a EuroSport right now, been lying around my workshop for a few years. Im, splitting the elevons precisely to avoid, or at least give chance of coping with, exactly the situation you found yourself in !

Ron,
I too am currently building a Euro/Typhoon a scale as I can. I've been toying with the idea of splitting the elevons for a while and reading your post has convinced me it's a good way to go, for the redundancy and scale appearance. Just wondering, do the surfaces move as one in the whole flight or can they be used as 'flap' on landing?

Flaps on deltas don't work, unless, like the Javelin they have a tailplane !! My Euro will be a Typhoon too !!

David,
Actually, the Euro has a tail plane......except that it is up front! I have a Reaper (basically the same layout) that is retired from duty that I used flaps on. Actually, I used crow to get the thing to land with a little power on for about 250 flights.
Ron,
Split the elevons, use four servos, spread your odds.........

John

I test flew a freinds Eurosport with 8611's on the back one each. Flew great and no flaps are needed as it lands like a trainer. I understand the comfort level of extra servos but have seen failures only when someone bumped a surface and did nothing and then a failure. Been flying jets since 1994 when we only had one servo per control and all went well. If you want a good fuzzy feeling then install 2 per side. I do not think it is needed though.
Good luck with your project and sorry to the gentleman that lost his plane.

Ron, three Euros and each of them with one servo per elevon, I even think I had 8411's on the first one. Even back in the days of the HotSpots, one servo on each surface. I think you had a VERY rare failure and that sucks, and I understand you wanting to reduce your future risk, and if two makes you feel confident, then go for it.
Sorry I didn't get a chance to get up your way when I was in AZ, but I'll be back for the summer and still have you number.
George

RE: Euro Sport 1 Servo Or 2 On Elevons
Thanks George and all that posted.
I have over a 100 flights on my fantasy Euro that has 1 servo per elevon. No probemes I do think what happened was rare. I just don't want it to happen again.I did a complete ground check and every surface checked out. Then failer. I figure I will go ahead and split the elevos and basicly it will be the same thing as say the King Cat Elevators! Just if 1 fails I might have a chance to limp it in on the other. thanks again everyone for your input.

George when you get out to Az give me a call. Still got 3 more Euros to fly

Any idea what caused the 8711 to fail? I have generally used Hitec 5955 s on most of my planes without any issues, but decided to try 8711s on my most recent project. After reading your post, I am just a bit concerned as to the reliability of the 8711s.

David,
The hinge line on the failed elevon was a little funky, it was very stiff and had kind of a spot where it was binding. The servo had a rather long metal (jr) arm on it with the hole all the way at the end which reduces the torque i believe. I am still surprised it stalled the powerfull 8711 servo then again the voltage was regulated so the servo was not really working up to its advertised potential. BTW i have used 5955`s in the past with no issues. I just bought (4) 8711`s for my next jet and i am concerned as well.

RE: Euro Sport 1 Servo Or 2 On Elevons
Hi Vin:
I am using (7) 8711's on my UB, (3) on my ES elevons and rudder, and (1) on my BC ARF Elevator......no problems over 2 flying seasons......
8711's and any kind of a jammed or binding surface don't mix well together....one of my buddies just stuffed his ES when one of his elevon 8711 jammed and roached his battery.....I have found that with normal ops, they don't draw much more current than my 8411's, but if you jam them due to a bad hinge line, flaps set too tight, or you sustain unrecognized servo gear damage, their powerful motors just sit there drawing mucho amps while at the same time locking the surface often in a dangerous position and/or burning up wires and battery. Unlike the 2721's or even 8411's, their motors just don't burn up.

Good point Vin,
I also noticed after looking there was a bow in BOTH hinge lines (one worse one being the one that failed) causing a little bind. Ron as i mentioned at the field i would split your elevons for 3 reasons, If the hine isnt true it will reduce binding, Redundancy, and its "scale"

Ron, When I built my ES, I went through the same thought process. I ended up going to Split Elevons. I am running 8611's and I sleep at night. It really is no big deal for the install just a bit more programing, after its done you never thik about the what if's again..

RE: Euro Sport 1 Servo Or 2 On Elevons
Just to be Devil's advocate. There are 8 Euro's between our bunch with more than 1000 flights between them. The only only one that crashed was the one that had just converted to 4 servos. +- 40 trouble free flights on 2 servos berfore that. We are using one 8411 or 8511 per elevon without any problems.
If a suface or hinge jams, does not matter whether it is JR, Futaba, Hitec, etc, you will have a problem.
Do what makes you feel comfortable otherwise you will really kick yourself afterwards.
