It looks like the weather is going to cooperate this weekend, so I'm going to get the flying surfaces sanded and ready for glass. I've gone back and re-hinged the rudders, as I was never happy with the throw I had in them before. Now that I have re-done them, I have all the rudder throw I could possibly want.

I have also added the air fill valves and pressure gauges to the accessory hatch. I will also locate the I/O board, ECU, and switches here.

Back to sanding........

Lookin good jeff.. one question, is the wire center hatch hold down pins something thats shown on the plans of the newer generation F18 twin kits? or is it something you picked up from someone else?

Nick.. where's the pics man!!

Thomas,

That is a trick I picked up from someone else at some point.
You access the wires from the engine compartment hatch. I would have done the same setup with the main hatch if I had found a suitable place to run the wires in the fuse. Instead, ugly hatch latches.....

I'll post a couple of more pics of it later.

jeff,
understandable, i've seen it before on a few others twin bugs. I believe the Yellow twin arf bug uses the same system for the main hatch and has the wires exit on the bottom of the LEX at the front of the intake splitter plates. It looks very smooth on the front and since the wires (i'm assuiming 1/16 or 3/32" music wire) are fairly small, they aren't that noticeable.

Wayne,

Congrats! Glad it did right for you! I replied to your email and I'll follow up with some drawings. Don't let anyone tell you it's the valve or whatever! As for pipes, give me a call. Any pipe can have an issue (I've certainly had my share with Tam pipes, too). Let's see what happened with yours. I'd get it replaced before I'd go spend $400 or so dollars....

Congrats wayne...

Does anyone have a good source of documentation for the F-18? I've got the few "walk around" websites bookmarked, but would like something with more detailed drawings or pictures showing access panels, hatches, etc etc.

OK GUYS
im posting this because i dont want to see anything happen to any of your 18s, as you all know the maiden was great. on closer inspection for the second flight it seem the tailpipe was badly distorted and cracked, which in the wrong place and the wrong time you would have lost your aircraft for sure. on removal from the airframe it seems 60% of the spot welds have broke free im giving yellow a call tomorrow to see if they can shed some light on it as we all know they are pretty helpfull guys anyway ill post a few pics and see for your self just be carefull these are not cheap aircraft and they deserve the best aftercare, perhaps it was a bad batch i dont know .anyway take it easy and dont worry to much
regards and happy landings

Hey Guys,

I am looking for a little advice. Back in 1999, I built the Yellow twin F/A-18 and modified it to accept twin Ram 1000s. I have never flown the plane and have since been contemplating converting it back for a single turbine. My question, would it be possible to install a bifurcated pipe into this model without butchering the existing hatch? Just curious if any of you have installed a bifurcated pipe into an already built Yellow twin F/A 18.

David,

Here are the removable tail cones from my generation one F-18, this work was done by Tony Scott in El Paso.

I've had a little opportunity to work on my F-18 between business trips.
Here is my attempt to make the area behind the splitter plates a little more scale.
Sorry for the pic quality, taken with my BlackBerry.
Hope everyone is plodding on with thier F-18's.

Jeff,

Cool, man! I'm glad you're plugging back away on this! On the new kits, the inlets are smaller for turbine. This is a new ARF for twin turbine. You can't really see it from these pics, but they neck down to mate up to the bypasses now...

Hi,

Yeah, it's one of two new ARF arrivals. One is for twin, the other for single. Pretty neat!

Thank you,
This plane is just great to land.
Unfortunately my model were was a second-hand, had a wing broke in flight and was completely destroyed.
