Default Do It Yourself Fibreglass Fuel Tanks

Guys,

I need to make a custom fuel tank (~30oz) for my SM Gripen. It will be about 5-1/2" long, 5" wide, and about 2-1/2" high with a bit of a 1/2 moon shaped cutout running lengthwise so it fits under the intake duct. I haven't done a tank before and was wondering if some of you pros could give some advice as to methods (male versus female molds, blue/pink/white foam, mold preparation, single piece tank or two pieces Hysol'd together, layup, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Jim

Use the same method to make the molds. If I were molding tanks from fiberglass I would use a couple of layers of 4oz cloth, and 2-3 layers of 6oz.

I also have some scans of an article on making tanks. PM me your email addr if you want, and I will forward the scans to you.
