Default Wheels for Kavan electric brakes

The smallest wheels I can find that work with the Kavan electric brakes are 4 inches. Has anyone used these with smaller wheels, 3 to 3.5 inches? If so, part numbers please.

I've always thought that an electric brake utilizing a magnetic type solinoid valve would be cool. Anyone tried this?

In essence, the Kavan brake is the same thing, just a larger diameter winding. Instead of pulling in a plunger or piston, it pulls in the brake disc.

That is, unless you mean something entirely different ? []

oh, ok then that is what I was thinking. Sounds like a really good method. is there a link to these? Not Hobby Lobby but some actual spec info so I can see how they work on existing wheels? Instruction manual would work.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page...

Bruce Tharpe has a lot of info on these brakes in one of his updates. I believe you can buy the Kavan brake from Bruce (http://www.btemodels.com/r54.html) as well.

They work okay, not as powerful as a good o ring brake system, but a fraction of the price, and no airleaks to worry about!

I have mine siliconed to a 2 1/4" Kavan wheen, used on the nose gear of my Boomerang Intro.
It has marginal stopping power but enough for the Boomerang.

Hobby Lobby wants about $65 for it. SIG gets $40.

You make the call.

Hanger 9 Prolite 3".
That's the wheel I bought from Bruce Tharpe, started at 3 inch, now 2 3/4 inch, next time flying from tarmac............

The Hangar 9 wheels also have a recess in the size of the rim that suits the disc perfectly. - John.

I'm using a plain jane 2 3/4" wheel with no problem. Just drill small holes to accept the two tabs on the brake disc, and them ShoeGoo it squarely in place. Space it out from the brake drum 1/64", and make sure to use a full 9 volt transistor battery on it. Anything less and you're cheating yourself. The 9v. transistor batteries are cheap and easy to replace using the button connector, and they don't impact your important on-board radio, and ECU battery. Works like a champ !

I recall seeing a report that someone had used a DC motor speed controller with a Kavan brake to get proportional action .. cool :-)

I am using a "dumb" (non programable) DC speed control for simplicity. There is some proportional action but mostly I use it "on" or "off.

Usually some one has one laying around they don't use any more for electric power planes.

I can't see that "partially on" would do much at all.....
