BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
Hi guys,
I am considering Flite Metal for the covering of my F-100. Based on your experience what is the weight gain when using the flite metal finish ?
Is there a real difference betewen paint and the tape ? I have never used the tape before.
Thanks
Frankie

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
Cats ass is about right with the metal mourphous..and it smells bad too. looks like a giant testors plastic model....YUCK!! nothing compares or looks as real as Flite metal. Do not worry about the weight Frankie it will be just fine. My Mig weighs in at 26 lbs, All the BVM birds will still fly awesome with a little extra weight. Get ready to bust out the sand paper! Did you get your canopy to work? I could not find my pics of mine.
Have a good one

Justin is right.
I didnt want to go knockin the Morph, but personally I dont like it. It doesnt compare to Flite Metal. It also makes all the seams stand out like a sore thumb. Save yourself thousands and go with Flite Metal. Dont worry about the weight.
I know this still doesnt answer your question, but my personal opinion is the extra weight is insignificant.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
Not sure which M.M. planes you've seen, but the two that I have seen( Ron Longs F-86 and Joey C's F-100) looked unbelievable. Maybe the planes you saw didn't have as much prep work done or something.
Just my thoughts, to each his own. Good thing is ,when done right, they both look killer.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
Thanks for all the input. I am getting ready to fly it on primer first, then I will take my time on the detailing.
Justin,I have not even try the canopy yet. First, I will get on the air.
In have not seen any models with the MM, I think the Flight metal is the answer.
What about the rivets ? what is the best way do this with Flight Metal????
Can you paint right over the Flight Metal ?

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
The pictures of the F-100 in Ron's shop don't do the MM on the F-100 justice. It looks much better with the markings and some panels in it for depth. BTW, I talked to a guy who was a mechanic on the F-100's back in the days before they went camo and he said that they were much more "monochromatic" than most models of them are because they were actually painted with aluminum lacquer paint. The color pictures I have of this airplane in full-scale seem to bear that out...
One major benefit of the MM finish is that its tougher than the actual fiberglass underneath it and it can easily be polished out. Its lighter than FliteMetal or paint as well.

Frankie,
Dont bother to primer!!! Not needed..
I used different sized brass tubing for the rivits. You can go back with small flat head screw driver and make some look like screws.
Paint right over Flite Metal no problem, just clean really well first with that dx330

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
I would like to see how those mexi chrome birds would do at top gun.
Frankie get some brass tubing around .050 it is around the right look and feel for the rivetts. Are you putting a P-160 in the Hun?

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
I didnt really want to get into a FM-MM pissing match. They are both very nice. I personally prefer Flite Metal for ALOT of reasons.
Frankie wanted to know about FM, so im trying to help out.
I have seen the M.M. Greg Anixter F86, while it is a beauty, I thought his F.M. F100 was even more so.
Bob, are you sure that MM is lighter? I have always heard it was heavier.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
I think he's just being sarcastic about the "spray on" metal.
the price and time that goes into that MM can hardly be called "mexi" though
Now if you dipped your bird in "liquid rubber" or tightly wrapped it in rope, that might be considered "mexi"

I agree that FM and MM both look good and a pissing match not intended, but my point was more towards Justin's comments about the MM. MM is not eligible for most competitions, and that's probably as it should be, and its not cheep. However, most Flite Metal finishes of F-100's are "over detailed" for the actual finish of the real thing back in the day (Cutshall's restored F-100 is MUCH more polished and shows more surface differences than the original aircraft) and the MM finish is bullet proof in comparison to Flite Metal.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
Thats what I thought but I wanted to just confirm. The time to MM as opposed to chrome is way different. Hardly mexi though, please. Joey C's F-100 looks AMAZING and would smoke half the Top Gun models out there.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
Apply your panel to the plane, then mask off that panel with blue tape, then scuff the panel in the direction or to the luster that you wish. It's actually pretty easy to do, it just takes time and PATIENCE.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
BTW, you can mask off the panels on the MM finish and do the exact same thing to create the same multi-panel effect as Flite Metal. The bonus is, if you don't like it, you can simply polish it out and get back to the same even finish. I didn't do that on Joe's F-100, because, as I said, the real operational ones back in the 50's and 60's were basically one finish overall.

RE: BVM F-100 Aluminum finish Question
I don"t think Justin has seen a MM finish in person because the look of the MM finish is as close to the real finish as you are going to get, not to mention it will not scratch as easy like FM. For me MM was the way to go, everyone who built a BVM F-100 was using FM, and to do something differant, MM was the way to go. Either way, I don"t build or paint, or no how to add FM, so I would of had to pay some one to put the FM on, and the prices I was getting for labor and the cost of the FM, it was cheaper to go MM, and the look is uncomparable, I have both an F-100D in FM sitting next to my F-100F in MM and the differance is not even close. Any one is more than welcome to come by my home and see them both for your self and you decide.

You got a lot of nerve talking SMACK about a bird you have never seen in person... "MEXI CHROME"???? You should call Joe C's F-100 a "MEXI MOBILE" to his face!!!! I hope I will be there with a video camera when you do...
