Has anyone here ever built Old Nick Ziroli Saab Viggen? I think it was out about 10-15 years ago. I have thought about looking into building one and converting it to electric.

I built the little F-4, but not the Viggen. It was a fun little build. If the canopy was offered again, I'd probably build another for electric. Not many people bend balsa these days though...

Nick is up in Baltimore working for me for the next 2-3 months. He and I have lunch together everyday during the week and talk about differant things some not hobby related. However he has gotten some of his old plans out and is thinking about redoing them for EDF. He and I are scaling up the E-Turbinator he did in MAN to 60" span for 90-120 size fans 8-11 cells. After that who knows what Nick will come up with, but I can always tell him of the interest in new models. A few years ago I told him he needed to design a sport jet since the turbines work so well ;and now we have the Turbinator.

I need to scan and post a pic of mine one of these days. I believe mine weighed in at 4.25 lbs, with fixed gear, and Dave Brown lite wheels, and painted pre-primed coverite micafilm. With today's liteweight retracts, and perhaps resize the tailpipe, it might make a neat little balsa E-jet. [8D] Mine didn't fly well due to a CG issue. I wish I would've realized it back then, so I could have trimmed it out better.

Wow the Nick Ziroli Viggen really brings back some memories. I built a least three of them back in the mid 1980's. My first on was built around a RK 740 which was a piece of junk.. Me and my friend Terry Best developed a fan unit that took a viiolett rotor turned down to 4 inches, a piece of sewer pipe coupler for the shroud and a K@B 7.5. It worked very well. I deceided to dust off my 25 year old Ziroli f-15 and take some pictures. It weighs 48 ounces with rhom nose gear installed and 4 servos. Any of thes old ziroli jets would be great with electric power.

The Viggen was the first of my CL ducted fans. It flew very well, wearing out several sets of tires doing touch & goes. Flew it at one of the first AZ Jet Rallies with only a third of a circle to takeoff and land on due to runway width. I did very well with it. Built the F-15 - got Dead Last in CL scale at the 80 something nats - pixx poor retract landing gear system. I have the F4 plans but never built it. They could all be built with todays electric power for way stand off scale.

Any idea as to what size fan would be good for a plane like this? I really don't know much about EDF. I fly nitro ducted fans.

What is the size/weight of the Viggen and what nitro DF unit is it designed for?

If its a .45 sized DF unit, you could probably use a 90mm fan, but for .60 sized and up fans, you'll probably want a 120mm fan unit. Even some of the Jet Hanger Hobbies DF planes that used to fly on the .45 sized DF use a 120mm fan though. The power of the EDF unit also varies greatly by the motor and number of cells you put on it. A 120mm EDF unit can be powered with anywhere from 9 to up to 14 cells and the power output varies significantly based on that...

I believe they were originaly designed for a Kress Jet RK 740 or RK 20. Basicly a 25 size jet or shoehorned 45? Maybe 4 1/4 diameter?

Wonder if a Midi fan or a 480 would work? One of the posts above listed theirs (F-15) as coming out at 4 1/2 pounds.

Actually what I found was that the Kress unit was 3 1/8" in diameter which is about 76mm. The Midi fan is 90mm and is supposed to put out about 5 lbs of thrust at 35000 RPM, so that should work for a 4 1/2 pound plane. I would think that with a 480, you'd have to push it right to the edge to have the power you'd want whereas with the Midi fan, you could back off a bit on motor/batteries and still have plenty of power.

I have plans for a 23" w/s kress/ziroli viggen. It was made for the 709E fan. I plan on using a 60mm hoffman. I can copy them and send them to whome ever wants them,

I just burned my 25 year old Viggen remains. Makes me rather sad. To correct rhklenke's post, the Kress RK20 and 740 are 4" (101.6mm) fans. They were to be used with the K&B 20/OS25VFDF and the K&B 7.5, 8.5/OS46DF. A simple modification of the OS25 was the repacement carb from a OS40 and going to a duct flow pressure fuel system. Ran sweet and steady. There are some Kress fans and engines for sale in e-zone fuel.

Kress made several sized fans. The 3.125 was for a .15. He also made one for a .09 and a 1/2A. He made a couple of rotors about 5" dia for a .60 but never went into production with them. The bigest problem with his fans was that they were not user friendly for assembly. They never really cought on to the modeling public except for the RK20 which he produced and was also produced in Japan. If you find an RK20, make sure ot has the orange plastic. That's the other problem - 25 year old technology for the materials used. Our plastics today are much better.

If I were to build a Viggen again, I would go over the Ziroli plans to make the body width, the top and bottom lines, and intakes (probably wouldn't hurt to work on the wings also) more scale. Hint - buy a plastic model for the outline and color scheme. The inlets need a lot of work and the outlet needs to be reduced. A good 90mm fan should work. Retracts woud be a plus and they would be interesting with the double wheels WHICH just have to be fitted. One of the more interesting problems comes with the painting. Since the plane is very much a stand way off scale, if you want to put on the camoflage, you best be prepared with a propotional scale ruller to get it to look right. It took me two weeks to paint mine (Model Masters) and it sure looked good. Put it in the shade with grass and bushes around it - it does blend in.

Its not a perfect scale but it's not bad at all. Nice plane almost done just waiting to get the fan. I have messed with the Rk709 TD 09 biut a few semi flyable scratch builds.

There are a lot of the older plans that would make great EDF's.. I built 2 of Ziroli's Phantom's years ago. They flew really well for that time period.

Eric Baugher's Performance Phantom would be AWESOME.. Flying Models did a couple plans for DF's back in the day.. There was another that was I can't remember the name of now. The original used a cut down BV fan, but then later was redesigned to use the Turbax 1 fan. It was called the Invader I think.
