TBM DV8R ARF and Build Thread with Pictures
Finally got it in! This is the Second prototype. It comes with some changes from the original. PLUS this is a 2 piece wing. It came well packed with plenty of cushion. My first thoughts were, WOW! The covering job is GREAT! Did find out that you have to put the stickers on the tail, Better get it right the first time! Plane comes with CA hinges. The fuse. is also a 2 piece. I am very happy with the build job. I do see some places that need to be built up a little. I will be posting pictures as I put it together and my thoughts. Here are the first pictures. I will be putting a ARTES Super Eagle in for power. Let me know if you have any questions.

How does the wing attach and isn't there a 3 part wing in the works?

I can't figure out if the two halves are temporarily joined together and then the one piece is joined to the fuse or if the two halves plug into the fuse. There is an opening on the bottom of the fuse that seems to be where the wing would go.
A three piece wing would be nice so that air lines and servos don't need to be disconnected. My Boomerang has this set up and I really like it.

Wing halves go together with wing tube and than bolt to fuse. Yes, 3 piece would be nice but they are thinking that it will make it to heavy.

Gerry,
Just a quick question, if you are building this to provide feedback for the factory and feedback for TBM why would you not use the CA hinges so the customer can feel comfortable with what they will receive with there kit. Will the final production kit come with Robart hinges?
I know many people do not trust CA hinges but if this is what is going to be offered to the public then flight test data should be used with what is supplied with the kit. Just my 2 cents worth.

Brian,
I agree!! I have the Shock Jet and did a review on it with the CA hinges. As long as they are put in RIGHT there is no worry. So after thinking of what you said, I WILL be using the CA hinges. Thanks for the info. I also agree on keeping the 2-piece wing. Gerry

The CA hinges on my Boomer XL performed flawlessly at 10mph and 187mph. I personally have never heard of anyone losing a plane or control surface because the CA hinges gave way.

Brian, As far as I know you are looking at fall MAYBE! It takes so long to get the plane from China. Plus TBM is making some more changes to the plane. Gerry

Hey All,
I just got my gear from Sierra! These are Awsome!! I am going to trial fit them to see what, if anything needs to be changed on them. They are really great retracts! Also going to be getting wheels and brakes from them. I had there wheels and brakes on my old DV8R and they worked GREAT!!! I will post pictures Later.

Got started on the retracts. I had to do some extra cutting on the wing, But I do have retracts. The ARF comes with a perforated cut out for there retracts. They are are VERY hard to see and find. You have to heat or push on the covering. I had to make some changes but not alot. Here are some pictures of the wheel well and retracts. The TBM has more of a angle than the Sierra. I am also getting the Sullivan wheels and brakes from Sierra. I did notice that the wheel wells really need to be beefed up. I will be making a well cover after all lines are installed. With the cutout of the well it becomes very weak all around it.

Yes, The cut outs will be there for the TBM retracts but not any others. I don't think the wing will be reinforced at the wells. You will have to cut out the wheel wells.

RE: Its Finally HERE! TBM DV8R
OK.. I have been in and out of the hospital and now I have two surgrey's in March. So I am going to try and have this jet done before the first one on March 6. I have been working on the wings and installing the servos and hardware. I did buy some finish washers. All went well with that. It was kind of hard to find the hard points. I also started on the elevatores. One of the holes was way off and had to redrill it. I also had to cut down the wood blocks to get them to fit. I also had to find some small screws to fit the cover. I could not find hard points at all on them. I also cut out the retract wheel for the other wing. I am waiting for the air lines and other stuff from Sierra. On the nose whel I had to take out the wardware there and fill it so I could redrill the holes for the Sierra retract. I also added another block of wood. All in all everything is going together good. I am using JR digitals for the most, But for the flaps I am using JR4721. I am also using a smaller servo size on the elevators. If you look at the elev. covers they are not centered, So you have to decide if you want more up ourdo you want more down? I went with more up.

Tonight I worked on the rudders. Instead of putting them in the fuse. I put them in the stab. Its closer and to me looks cleaner. My first DV8R had them in the stab and really like them there. Here are some pictures. If you can't make out what I did let me know.

Worked on the jet today.Put the tiger's on the tail. Not hard to do. Also installed the retracts. You need very little line to the mains. I did have to do some cuttingto get them to fit and to clear the air lines. I also pre-instaled the turbine. I had to do lots of cutting on this part! The rails are set up for a small turbine. I talked with TBM about this and I think they are going to leave them out so the builder can cut them to what they need. Instaled the nose gear, Sierra set me two different lengts of nose gear. I had to use the smaller one. I put the incedence meter on the plane and it came out to +1.2 on the main and on the tail. I do beleave that TBM had theres set at +2. I put the fuse together and used Hysol. Teh fuse went together very well! I also trial fitted the 113oz. fuel tank, MAN this will fit in very nice! Will be able to use velcro straps and is very easy to get too! I trial fited the wing to the fuse and added so bracing to make the wing holders stronger.

Got the control horns in and they are the wrong size, so I have to send them back. Finished the rudders, and put the covers on. I also put chrome covering back on where I had to take the heat tape off. I had to put a piece of hard wood on the rudders due to none being there. Got all the air lines hooked up and working great. I also have been hooking up all the servos and getting them set. Thsy jet comes with some short, medium, and long control links. I found that they all need to be short. I did find out that the flap links are set way to far in. they are almost evan with the servo. The engine plates have been cut and the turbine fits great! I am going to instal a smoke system that will hold 45ozs.
