Excellent looking model indeed - unfortunately shipping costs to Europe from Taiwan are very high [][]

the case is larger in volume, so the cost of freight cost is higher.

We introduced the F8/9F Cougar at Mississippi Afterburner. Having received the complete kit expertly packaged the day prior to departure, we actually unpacked at MAB.

This was my first look as well as most of the pilots at MAB. Acceptance was so good, the display model sold as did two additional kits. This complete ARF package is nothing short of fantastic. From the outstanding paint work, to the weathering it is truly a jet you will want.

All up weight (everything received with the kit) came in at 23lb 7oz. Add to this the radio, turbine and ancillary parts will bring you in dry at about 31 to 33 pounds.

Their custom 5 liter fuel tank is kinda horseshoe shaped with a custom bubble free air tank system nestled neatly in the center. Neat engineering. All control surfaces are of the "hidden hinge" type and nicely done.

Cockpit details (installed) as well as a sliding canopy which is also nicely engineered. The operational tailhook is complete and ready to install.

The kit is complete. . .sans radio and turbine and I do mean complete.

The build instructional manual with pictures is in the capable hands of a Florida jet pilot and extremely talented modeler. I am not mentioning his name as I have not asked permission. This manual and flight report is due and will be available in about two weeks.

Servo selection for all controls except Elevator and nose steering will be JR 8411 and 8411A. Locations for each will be indicated. Elevators come with an engineered mount for two JR 3421 servos. The math has been done on the torque requirements indicating all servos will operate their respective surface with torque to spare. Builder will note that servo arms should be short and control arms long to generate "comfort zone" leverage. Equations available upon request.

Three distinct colors are presently available. Now here is the GREAT part; Delivery to your door is presently 5 - 7 working days after payment is received!

The only option other than color is to have the installation of cylinders, retracts, tail hook etc done by this young talented factory. This may slow delivery; however for those who want this, a time saving option.

Email me at [email protected] for any questions you may have.

Best to all. . .

Eric

Eric,

Chad
Chad, pretty quick. I am going to have about 40 hours in the plane give or take, but this was the first build without an instruction manual and I took the time to CAD design some additional parts, like an air valve board. The access to all areas of the plane is excellent, parts fit is great, the components are above average for an Asian kit and as Eric has pointed out, the kit is pretty complete. All these factors contribute to a quick build.

Keep in mind, the kit is still pretty young, so I'm sure it will continue to improve as well. I believe Leo has tried to take an Asian kit to new levels of quality and for the most part, he has succeeded.

Eric has pointed out some of the nice features of the kit, such as an excellent out of the mold paint job with complete nomenclature, gear doors that are live hinged, a very nice cockpit and an operating tail hook. Some other features include an operating canopy, scale speed brakes, scale split flaps, enclosed and painted wheel wells, scale details such as antennas and nose strut casting, removable nose cone, high quality ply with phenolic gear mount reinforcement, scale wing fences (preinstalled), molded scale light pockets in the wing with tinted clear lens covers, disk brakes with inflatable rubber wheels and twin carbon fiber wing spars. It appears they used actual V-poxy throughout the build process rather than the typical white stuff. No gaps and really a very neat construction job. As we would say in the computer industry, this one seems to be a price performer.

If there is interest, I will do a brief build thread here on RCU.

Hello,

How much are they and do you have all white ones (for a discount from the painted price I mean)?

Also, will the rep's mods from his build be included in kits going forward, or offered as rework after sale?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Matt, any mods will be included in the instruction manual as optional addendum's. It remains to be seen what gets incorporated back into the kit, and what will be available aftermarket.

To be honest, there won't be many. The kit is pretty straightforward.

I began the build with the tail section ... horizontal stab first. Primary task is to install the servos ... the elevators come live hinged.

The wooden spar structure within the wing is set up for a JR 3421, and I did some servo torque calculations using the Experimental Reg formulas and these servos produce sufficient torque as long as you keep the clevis close in on the servo arm. The work required is evident .... capture the servo in the pre-slotted mount, install the elevator control arms and linkages and then slot the hatch cover.

Eric Clapp of Jet Central turbines had one of these kits at Mississippi jets. I saw it and it is a awsome kit. I am not much of a fan of the jet but when I saw the kit in Mississippi It made me want one. I cant wait to see what kits they come up with next.

The stab is bolted on to the fuse, I trimmed the front of the saddle just a bit to get it to lie flat. Not shown in the picture is the upper vertical stab, which is simply mounted by tightening a clamp on the main spar and installing a capture bolt from the inside of the fuse on the front mental anti-rotation pin.

The rudder hinges are glued into pre-drilled holes and then the upper and lower rudders are installed. They are actuated by a steel U bracket, shown here, and activated by a pull pull system. I am thinking about modifying this to a direct linkage system as there is room for a servo just below the horizontal stab in the tail section, but haven't made up my mind yet.

This whole assembly comes apart for maintenance by removing the top vertical stab and the two steel straps.

To complete the aft end of the fuse, the tail hook is installed. Formers are pre cut for aluminum sheath, so the construction consists of securing the mechanism with safety wire and running the lines. Neat little piece of equipment.

The nose gear bolts into a wooden framework, which is in turn bolted to the nose of the aircraft. Note the quality of the ply. This front nose section has cutouts for battery and ballast attachment.

Since the gear doors are all live hinged, the only real task is to attach cylinders. The pictures below show the nose gear door set up, the main inner door set up, and the bracket/spring arrangement that attaches the strut door to the strut.

The handy little L brackets to attach the cylinders come with the kit. The door brackets are high quality phenolic.

Note that the nose gear door is closed by a button switch, activated with the gear comes into the fully retracted position. The main gear doors, that open and close with each gear actuation, are controlled by a sequencer. Also note that the nose gear steering is integrated into the strut.

The next piece of the air systems are the twin speed brakes just behind the nose gear doors. Each speed brake is hinged by two offset hinges glued to the front of the door. A cylinder is attached between the two hinges with a piece of 2-56 all thread. Slots are routed in the front former for the hinges and with the doors taped in place, the hinges are V-poxied to the fuse. Cylinders are then attached to the former with provided wooden L brackets. I thought these steps would be problematic, but all went together well. The only additional step required is to reinforce the former behind the wooden L brackets to reduce flexing with the twin speedbrakes deployed. I am going to add some black vinyl dots to simulate air holes. The doors are hollow, so I don't think I want to actually drill them out.

The main air board that contains valves for the tail hook, speed brakes, doors and retract units actually serves as part of the fuel tank retention system. Pics showing the fuel tank retention system will be posted later, but here is the completed air board unit installed in the fuse over the intakes. Also shown are the air tanks ... there are four provided. Two service the gear and doors, one services the brakes and the last one services the tail hook and speed brakes. Two tanks are mounted on each side of the nose gear formers as shown.

Their air valve are really pretty nice, but I couldn't use them on the doors and gear as they have fairly long throws (see tail hook and speed brake valves) and the lengths didn't work with my fixed throw sequencer.

While I was waiting for glue to dry on the fuse, I began working on the wings. They go quickly, as the servo pockets are pre cut for servo mounting and the flaps are live hinged. The work is simple ... install the aileron using Robart pin hinges, mount servos, glue in control horns and then install linkages. Notch servo covers and the work is complete. The aluminum servo brackets and screws are really a step above the typical asian hardware and I was impressed. 8411's drive the ailerons and 8611's move the flaps. Note use of SWB servo arms.
