RE: Fei Bao F-5 Build
To finish the drag chute. I trimmed about 1/4 inch off the chute tube closest to the rudder connection, to allow for easy installation and removal of the chute ram and glued it in place. I also made a couple of small formers to strengthen the tube, since the chute connection will be on the chute tube and not on the fuselage sides as in other installations. Next I made the hard wood block that connects the cute to the plane and used a 1 inch long eye bolt. The hole for the chute cable will exit the fuselage just below the chute tube. Line up the block on the chute tube and drill a hole throught the fiberglass and into the hard wood block, this will make sure your chute cable and eyelet will be at the same height. Glue the hard wood block with the eyelet in place. I used a brass servo gromet for the fuselage exit hole. It will keep the cable from splitting the fiberglass. Once the glue dries I will sand it flush.

RE: Fei Bao F-5 Build
Been working on this thing all day! Getting all the nit-noid stuff out of the way. I took one of the sidewinders and pulled the fins off and stripped it of paint to make a ACMI pod for the left missile rail. The fins will make nice antennas, when cut up. The other sidewinder will get repainted. I also stripped one of the 300 gallon fuel tanks to ride a center belly pylon, when I get around to it. The ACMI pod is for practice air to air combat, telemetry. There's a couple pics of the real thing.

The steering servo had to go between the pilots feet on a shelf that I made from the original plywood shelf that came with the plane. I just shortened it to make room for the cockpit. I finally pulled my pilot out of the box and kicked Blue Angel Capt. Rob Ffield to the side. Let's just say "W the pilot".

On the F-5 there are small white lights that are located under the cockpit, near the pull out foot holds on each side fuselage. Here is the installation. I drilled 1 hole in the location of each light. Then I cut 2 pieces of 1/4 in. ply and drilled a hole in each to insert the LED's. I also sanded each to conform to the fuselage shape. The blocks will be painted black and glued in place after the fuselage is painted.

Wow Jed.....you are doing an awesome job on this F-5. It definitely won’t look like a plain wrapped production model. Makes mine look like an XL while yours is the XLT!! I guess I can't park next to you on the ramp a KY Jets Just kidding. I want all the FeiBao Jets lined up. There will be a lot of F-4's and F-5's there this year!!

Dom,
Thanks man! These 2 A.M. stints down stairs in the shop are starting to take a toll.[] You can be my wingman anytime. Dude, I can't wait for KY either. I was mad I missed it last year, but this year I'm in.

Not much to show for today. Glued in all the control surfaces. I also wrestled with door hinges and landing gear, but I did get it standing on the gear. Finished the chute and did some heat protection and heat shield painting. I also started plumbing air lines and some wires. placed the motor and some other stuff to get a feal for the CG. There are a few misc. shots too.

Work on all the air valves on the door sequencer I got from Dan at Details4scale. It's really a nice unit, for us with Futaba's 14MZ, 12Z, 12FG you can use it in DG1 or DG2, because it does all the ATV's on both gear and door servos and on aux door servos if installed. I also set up the chute servo and valve. Then on to the rudder lights 4 in all 2 white position lights and 2 red beacon lights. I first took a dremel and sanded off the raised beacon and pos. light. I then used a x-acto blade and saw to remove the remaining fiber glass. I cut just to the inside of the old foot print. This will give a place to glue the new lenses on when they arrive. Then was the pain of fishing wire through the inside of the rudder[:@] I made a run from the beacon to the bottom of the rudder where I made an exit hole, then a small run from the pos. light to the beacon. Pulled both pos. light wires to the beacon, then all 3 wires from the beacon to the exit hole on the bottom of the rudder. I almost forgot, I also made an 1/8 plywood platform for the beacon light to be glued to later.

I raised the nose gear 1/4 in. with a couple pieces of ply to get a better positive angle of attack. It's not very noticeable. I also mounted the little valve in the nose gear well, it controls the little door just behind the nose gear. The valve closes the door and the down side of the gear lowers it. Works well.

Here is some of the heat protection around the the tail area. Since the drag chute requires air and there is about 1/2 in. clearence between the tail pipe, I used heat paint, ceramic blanket and foil tape to protect the ram and chute tube. There will be another full sheet of heat blanket to cover the servos when the pipe goes in later. I also made some formers for the hatch and protected the end closes to the engine exhaust.

To get the required 2 inch or better travel of the flap I had to trim the wing in the flap gap. You can see the the pencil line in the first picture. The 3rd and 4th pics show the before and after. I got the engine electronics board finished and mounted. I also shortened the wires for the starter and fuel pump and lengthened the battery cable which is about 3 feet away in the nose. For as long as the fuselage is there is not alot of room. I came up with a UAT mount that will allow it to be put on top of the mounting board and in the correct direction. Just some velcro and tie raps.
