RE: F-4 PHANTOM
There's nothing meaner lookin' or soundin' than a Phantom.
Packed away in a box somewhere I have an issue of Car & Driver magazine that featured a "test drive" of a Phantom. When I dig it out I'll scan it and post it. It's a very good read.
There was a sign in one of the pics that said " Better to have a sister in a cathouse than a brother in a Tomcat". Now they're both retired.[&o]

In the mid 80's AF F-4's engines got a low smoke mod. The mod basically welded shut some openings in the combustion section making the engine run hotter thus decreasing the smoke. You could tell if an engine was modified early in the process by the color of the AB as it would glow blue for a low smoke modified engine and orange for a unmodified engine. Sometimes you could see blue in engine#1 and orange in #2. Anyway Phantoms Phorever!

Another note concerning smoke:
As Mark said, several mods were made in an attempt to stop/reduce our smoke, but none were really successful. Remember, the F-4 was an aging airframe when the shooting war in Vietnam really got started. In fact, most of the Navy planes (A-4, F-8, and F-4) we flew during the war were old, and they all smoked to a degree. For those of you who are as old as I am you will remember even the Boeing 707 smoked. Just old technology by todays standards. Here's the irony of smoke. A fuel additive had been developed that virtually eliminated the smoke coming out of our engines. But, because of decisions made by the Secretary of Defense, in his attempt to run a cost efficient war, we were not allowed to use the additive. IT WAS JUST TOO EXPENSIVE. Those of us driving fast fighters always joked that we could out run our smoke.........the real sin affected our shipmates in their A-4's. They went in low and slow and were easy to spot visually a long way out. The first time I heard the term "Cluster Fxxx" came from one of my skippers as he discussed, with we the Junior Officers, how lucky we were to be able to accellerate very quickly..........in another words, "Lets get out of Dodge...........Do I miss it, a GREAT big yes! But, at age 65, it was a long time ago.

All Kinds of stories like Chris's out there, I would like to hear them all! Low and fast is what it was all about with Recces. Nebraska had several low level routes VFR and IFR. Every now and then we would hear from a rancher madder than a wet hen complaining we stampeded his cattle :-) One particular route (so I have been told) paralleled a major interstate. Pilots would fly so low they would have to gain alltitude to fly over the overpasses. Truckers had some laundry to do no doubt after those close encounters with a double ugly. The low smoke mod was fairly successful (sorry Chris!) as the smoke was reduced and from what I remember was equal to F-15's and 16's. At the last Red Flag we went to with Phantoms the agressors were complaining how they couldnt see f-4's coming anymore and it was to late when they did as the jets were low and way to fast. Not much could keep up with the F-4 on the deck from what I have been told.

RE: F-4 PHANTOM
I can recall of a battle in the vietnam war we were up against a large bunker system we called for an airstrike we got 2 x F-4 came screaming in for the the kill dropping their bombs the Screaming Sound would be enough to drive the VC out. instead of bombs. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH The double ugly! The last time Isaw one fly was about 30 years ago. Iheard the unmistakable rumble over the tree tops as two rhinos flew over in close formation. Iremember black noses and white undersides. They used to stop over at Donaldson Center in Greenville South Carolina for transient fuel. Kind of like a Ford, they just can't pass a gas station. Were the F-4's fitted with the ALQ 39? An advanced radar for its time. We had one on base that the metal shop used to practice on...

RE: F-4 PHANTOM
Hello everyone,
I have been searching the net now for an hour, trying to find a picture of the CREST of the BLUE ANGELS when they flew the F4!
Does anyone have a good jpeg of that emblem? I am finding tons of Hornet emblems, but no F4 ones...
Please drop me a PM if you do so I can give you my e-mail address.
Or just upload it here....
Thanks heaps,
Martin

There's also just a mystic about the Phantom that's hard to explain.
