Have a few questions: First, what kind of oil are you using in the struts ? Second, what air pressure for the struts ? Third, what is a good pressure for the main tires and nose ? Thanks for the help

Im about to maiden my buddy's large SM viper with 160SX. throws are per the manual and CG at about 225mm.

Any special tips or do's and dont's for the maiden ?
Thanks.
Keep the approach relatively flat, don't forget the flaps, crow makes a difference too. Otherwise just enjoy it, one sweet plane!

Finally ready for the maiden. All taxi test and engine runs went well, just have to get down to Buttonwillow for the test flight.

Maiden flight went without a hitch - here is a video of the maiden:

And here is Nessy Gil (owner of the big viper) flying it for the 2nd time (4th flight overall on the machine):

Notes from the test flight :
1. CG at 230mm feels great, but will move slightly backwards from now on, i reckon it would be even better.
2. stock throws were fine for basic flight , but a little sluggish for aerobatics, especially on the ailerons. on the rudder we used as much as we got.
3. plane feels solid through flying and basic aerobtics - super predictable on landing too. a joy to fly !

Good job by Skymaster for sure. this one was designed to fly well !

I just finished the turbine installation in my Viper but have not yet installed the intake extension. The fit between the rear of the intake and the front of the extension is so poor that I'd have to use a lot of glue to fill the gap between the lip on the extension and the rear of the intake. So I've been thinking about not installing it. Are you guys using the extension and if so, are you gluing it to the intake or attaching it some other way?

Thanks!

Ok Mike, It simple. I have my Viper no longer since it head firsted into the ground due to stahling it in a loop as I'm sure you have seen the video...(FYI.....don't do that!!!!) hehehe just don't get it t slow and you'll be fine. Now as for your situation with the intake as I assume you mean the "Mid intake"? That fiberglass tube that slides over the rear portion of the intake in the plane....... Are you using the Bypass? I assume you are. You want to get the bypass mounted first and the engine in the bypass at least the top partof it so you can fit or measure the distance of the mid intake. It needs to be cut. And a half square needs to be cut into the front part to able it to slide over the part where the intake in the jet is rooted to the fuse.

You want to cut less than more because you can always cut more but if you cut too much its another 20.00 for the intake and a minimal 3 weeks to get it. the lip of the rear should fit nicely rested on the bypass but its not going to be perfect on the top half because the engine will need to be shimmed to get the NGT of the turbine centered in the tailpipe. Many don't mention this and I went through two tailpipes before I figured it out.
It takes some mind working on the matter but I am sure you will get it. I may have pictures if you need them.
Also I initially used goop Zap goo to install the Mid intake a few dabs so I caould remove it if necessary but after removing it a few times the dried goop seemed to tight fit it so I never replaced it with fresh goo. And as for any gaps you may have where the bypass meets he mid intake that normal. you don't want to glue it there because it will make it harder to service the engine. And a sealed unit is not needed. It will take hot air in from the fuse and send it out the back.

I hope to get another Viper someday but I am going to try my F-18 first and if it goes well then I'll get another Viper.
Over all its the coolest looking plane. Flys great too!!

Gary.

Hi Mike

I cut my White front extending piece at an angle to fit the bypass correctly. I siliconed it on the intakes and put sticky backed foam about 10mm wide onto the extension so it fitted the bypass with no gaps.

Hope that helps

GEH3 ....I have a Viper as well.... keep it up the road from you at New Garden Airport. I used BVM canopy hooks mid cockpit and ha e had no issues with 50+ flights. I have extra if you would like a couple. Just let me know. Can meet you there if you would like Wends.
Good luck... you will love the plane.

Here's a recent video of my Viper flying at a fairly small field. Space is constrained by trees on both sides and the runway is 500'. Using a EvoJet Booster 160 for power.

dubd,

Congratulations on your maiden. Impressive slow speed on landing. Any idea of total runway used for take off and landing??

dubd,

That's great news for me, as our field is quite short, about 400 ft long. One more question, was there any upwind that day to help slow down the plane? The Viperjet seem to slow down quite a bit without any tendancy for stall. This is the first time i watch a video where you can clearly see how slow she is landing.

Thanks, Regards,

There was very little wind that day, maybe 2-3 mph.

I'm still investigating if your last work compromised the airworthiness of my VJ!

I kid, at your prices I'll even throw in a beer and let you fly something!

I've done some calculation, I have 100mt for 328 ft and good brakes But I've always landed on runway and I'm not so experienced on turbines like Ali...[8D]
