RE: Old School DF Jet Rally next year
The last time I flew a ducted fan was about two years ago, a yellow F-16. I fly at 5200 ft and the ducted fans were always a challenge. My f-16 quit after take off and I landed it safely in the grass and that was it, I had, had my fill of ducted fans.
I went through my logs and found that one in seven flights ended in a dead stick landing, always a different problem. You would work and work on them for a few flights.
They were great in there day and always love to see them fly, but I have been there and done that. It is not for me any more. But would love to watch. George

Well - let's wait & see whether Dave still has time to organize & run a DF event, now that he has a second little girl to fill in his 'spare' time. Congrats to Dave & Marcia on the arrival on Wednesday of little Juliana (hope I got the spelling right).

George you are spot on. I often used to go home and think ''is this worth it'' but I always came up with the same answer, yes it is. Nothing like jets, the turbine models are similar unless you fly in perfect weather from a perfect strip and buy everything ready made. I took my i.c. sport models out earlier in the week for a change from jet flying and came home feeling a little empty. Don't give up, percevere. Ron.

Guys,
don't be so hard on ducted fans, I still enjoy getting the old Viper out in the spring and fall for a few flights. There is no better way to stay practiced up on your dead stick landing skills, but man the sound of a BVM .91 unloading and coming up on pipe, classic, no turbine could ever match that music. Still it does take a lot of maintenance to enjoy that sound.
William, maybe we could get together at a jet meet again like we did few years ago, was pretty neat to show all these turbine guys where it all started, I'll bring the Viper.

RE: Old School DF Jet Rally next year
I really hope this happens...
But I think you guys only really remember the bad stuff about the df days. Now I am not gonna tell you how I am some sort of pro, but I have been playing with Byrons for 20+ years off and on (mostly off). And Ican fly sortyafter sortywith only fueling and checking a plugand never have any issues with dead stick landings. I might have one every 50 flights. The last one was from a throttel servo problem. The nylon clevis on the throttel arm wore out and fell off the carb arm.
I use OS .91's with os #8 plugsand weston pipes. Its taken some time to get them all dailed, but now that I have, there just as reliable as asport engine in a sport plane.
Of coures, these are byron's and theycant do 275 mphcoming out of a dive.Speaking of that I hopea few guys showupandget the speed wars going.

Josh the difference is that a Dyna max fan turns the engine at 26000 rpm to 28000 rpm and a Byron is about 21000 rpm to 22000 rpm, with a OS .91,so the engines don’t last as long and vibration is much worse.I have had both Byron and dyna max. BVM engines last as well. George

Hi Doug,
good to hear from you- I guess just about everyones gone turbine - but I still like DF.
And you seen me fly enough at M.S. park that I never had no engine problems - I could fly all day long.
Got a old beater Doug ?
Give me a ring. 760-247-2415

Hi George, are your r.p.m. figures for the Dynamax 'American revs??? In European revs the dynamax tachs 22k max on the ground unless you guys have managed to work some magic on the engines, In good humour, Ron Sweeney
