RE: 1/6th A-6 Intruder Scratch Build
Yes Thomas, when the internal structure is added to the vertical, it will be "sunk" back from the edge, making hinge seal. Thats why I added the piece of balsa as a leading edge to the rudder.

Wow, Ian!
That's a heck of a lot a progress...looking fantastic!
Looks like a pair of E-Dynamax will fit quite well.
Barry Rayborn standing with the 1/5.5 A6b Flight Of the Intruder movie model I will nurse back.
We're going to finish our two B-47's before getting on with the two 1/5.5 A6b's. I need to pull
a new canopy and windshield for mine from the one we bought in Florida last winter.

Ian,
I plan to use a large dia single tube rotating base mechanics moved with Down and Locked. They were able to provide proper travel for
our two B-47's when I went to them wanting to use a pair of Robart tailwheel retracts. The bicycle gear on the B-47's travels a very long
path...not unlike the A6.
I plan to construct faux scissors and strut detail on the mains. The nose in my opinion has too much articulation to make it from anything
but machined aluminum and stainless. I'll probably get Paul in Dallas to create the nose strut. I would like to incorporate articulation the
1:1 has when the dog bone is snugged up by the cat.
We're a long way from worrying too much about the gear. The B-47's are now at the milling stage... ;^)
I don't see too much of an issue with the mains on the 6 with them integrated into a full span key locked fan mount. Having the 5.5 here
permits a lot of measuring opportunities in that WIDE fuse. I have spent more time thinking about closing all those doors at 40 mph.
Years ago I built a He-162 with very much the same motion. I had to mount the mains at an angle permitting a path that swept inward
to tuck into the fuselage. I referred to it as a Frog foot gear. I think I can achieve the same here without rotation....but have not spent
much time on it...other than to reflect on my He-162 solution. Bill Spidel's images for illustration purposes.

RE: 1/6th A-6 Intruder Scratch Build
Carlos,
No, the above A6 is one of the five (5) constructed for the Flight Of The Intruder film released in 1991. The special effects
company owner lives here in Houston. He kept 1 of 5 constructed by a sub-contractor who now lives in Dallas, who at the
time lived in L.A.
The contractor in L.A. kept the molds and laid up another 10 semi-kits for sale. Those flown in the movie flew on a pair of
Byron's recip powered ducted fans. Speed to sustain flight was all that was required for the movie. Note the contractor's
sales brochure said there were 6 and 5 destroyed making the movie...nope :^)
A hurricane struck Houston two years ago flooding the SFX company owner's storage unit...and the remaining A6 was all
but destroyed.
To my knowledge there remains only one complete 1/5.5 constructed for the movie...it was in Germany. These were much
lighter weight than those intended for sale to modelers. The advertised weight of those was 40# AUW. Considering I have
read the mains machined for these weighed 14 pounds you can see where one with a pair of turbines would be.
I and a friend drove to Florida last winter and purchased one of the semi-kits from a gentleman who has since passed away.
We have everything the contractor packged and sold. Our pair of A6's will be EDF Dynamax powered.
The fuselage mold for the Flight Of The Intruder A6's was sold to a gentleman in Georgia, who sold it last year to someone
offshore who intends to market an A6. The man in Georgia never received the canopy or windshield plugs. I contacted him
shortly after I acquired the movie model. He had the 1/10th F-14 molds the contractor had created. It was not made for the
Top Gun movie.
Ian's 6th looks excellent! It should provide plenty of room for whatever power someone wants to uee. A 6th A6 will fly very
realistic at about 65 to 75 mph. So much for history, I'm now backing out of here and watch as Ian continues with his A6.

RE: 1/6th A-6 Intruder Scratch Build
Ok, I have gotten a little more done on the Intruder this weekend. I decided to attache the vertical in the interest of keeping things moving. I need to order some more 3 oz. glass cloth to finish glassing the top of the fuse and didn't want to slow my progress as of late so on we go. I busted out the laser level and shot a nice true line down the center of the fuse to make sure alignment was straight. I used some lengths of 1/2" dowel to affix the vertical onto the fuse and of course some epoxy. So far things have turned out well, nice and solid.

Yeah, with the vertical it gives it a little size. Once I have the whole thing glassed I will take it outside and shoot a pic on its nose.

RE: 1/6th A-6 Intruder Scratch Build
Quick update. I have been working on the forward fairing and ram air intake on the vertical. It has been proving to be troublesome but I think I finally have it all worked out. I was trying to decide on materials and finally used some high density blue foam I had around the shop. Glued it down and started carving. Then a coat of epoxy to seal it and I started using filler after that. For those of you that have not used a filler called ICING, I HIGHLY recommend it. It dries very fast and sands extremely well. Much better than Bondo or evercoat. You can feather it to a very fine edge as well. Only one pic for now but I will add more as I progress, most likely tonight.

Very little and slow progress in the past week or so. I have been battling a cold unfortunately so that kinda sucks. Anyways, here are some updated pics, not much but getting close to almost done on the vertical fairing.

Yeah, i will miss the Cali crew as well. I wish i would have been a little less busy these past two years, so i could have been to more events. But, being too busy is why i applied for this job!
That ICING looks nice! I thought evercoat was hard to beat!

SA's severe drought is worse than ours here in Houston. Hope we're seeing a break in it this winter.
Enjoy your new duty station. Welcome to Texas.
