Cash now, however it was a learning experience ;-) I agree with Doug and the others, good deals and second hand airplanes are my way of going about it......I took a busted ass AD F-16 i got from a good friend for nuttin, and made it one piece again and it looked like new! I kinda like the challenge of making something from "nothing" now!

Credit...........NO Thanks...
I can not see paying 10 to 20 % + for an already inflated hobby item.
I do Cash and shop the specials and sales to include the local auctions and etc....money in the bank and use the PayPal debit account works for me.
Need to talk Tower into layaways.... hummm just a thought. But !!!
A locked in sale in 30, 60 to 90 days isn't a bad deal for them and Christmas is coming up!
Much better than No Sale at all.
Most LHS's will do layaway if asked and if they know you. I know mine do as I have used this option several times over the years.

I never carry cash. Use someone elses money for up to 30 days with a credit card and get 1% kick back on all purchases. Pay it up each month - never carry a balance! If it is a large purchace I ask if there is any discount for cash. If not pay with credit card. I use a separate card of all on line purchaces so that it can be cancelled if compromised without impact on my normal card. Pay Pal works for me also when acceptable to the seller.

RE: How do you afford your toys? CASH or CREDIT
People at my field often ask.... " You have so many planes and such a variety of them, how do you decide what you get next?". Well, I tell them,"my best source is the 55 gallon drum out by the gate that people throw their crashed planes into". I havve flown planes with the wing from one plane and the fuselage from another. No cash or credit involved.
My next favorite source of paying for my hobby is to go to every swap meet I can and buy, sell and trade there, I pay cash or with parts or airplanes. I finance my projects with cash that I make from selling planes and items I dont use any longer and from restoring full size aircraft components for museums and/or individuals. The last Giant scale P-51 I bought was with money I made from restoring for static display a Rolls Royce Merlin Engine. Both hobbys help each other, I often have full scale parts around to use as reference for the RC warbirds I am building. Credit?, a really bad way to get toys, really bad. If you have to use credit to buy things for this hobby, you have your priorities wrong, especially if you have a family and kids.......

Yes credit cards are a thing of the past for me, Do not even own one! You was saying you rebuild full scale engines to buy your RC stuff, For me I play darts and go to as many tournaments as posible. The girl friend asks what I am playing for each time? last tournament I told her a Hangar 9 Spitfire and a new Saito 100 and am happy to say its in the hangar! One hobby paying for the other! I have over fifty planes just gave my son-inlaw a trainer and am teaching him to fly. I bought my first RC airplane after I sold my race cars! So I always have had a way to pay without taking it out of my account! Bob

Cash is the only way to go. Would never consider using credit for this hobby. I've even got rid of the credit cards just to make sure. An I even try and not use my paychecks. Rather I look for side work or sell stuff I have lying around to fund my heli hobby. Sh*t isn't cheap by any means. Will empty your pockets super fast. In two months I dropped $750 I didn't think I had on heli stuff. WOW!!!
Plus Ebay is your friend. I'm looking now for Hitec digital servos hahaha

RE: How do you afford your toys? CASH or CREDIT
recently my wife said"do you know how much you have spent so far this year on your hobby?" I said but you'll tell me and it was about 700 dollars. So I fired back and how much do you spend quilting.truth is probably not as much.I live within my means.I tried giant scale and man its expensive but I enjoy having a couple of planes and acquired them second hand ..theres no shame there as I love having them.I entered electric flight and find it convenient and affordable.I just finished a foam jety and what a fast screamer.but I also fly warbirds .I am retired now so I enjoy building again.one of friends buys everything and ha someone build for him .thats ok though he is obsessive about it.I cant do that to my family.sadly in earlier years I BECAME OBBESSED and it nearly cost me my family.no hobby is worth that price.

RE: How do you afford your toys? CASH or CREDIT
hey now easy folks.I use a credit card and pay off monthly and use the reward points to have a great dinner out.when my daughter was in college I oocasionally used credit card to pay tutition and used the flyer points to fly for a vacation.credit isnt the problem its the person holding the card and being able to manage the credit.sadly to many folks mismanaged credit and lost homes etc.I dont buy every item on sale at lhs but all that little stuff I do use cash or swap meets etc.after nearly 39 years of good marriage the wife and I know when and when not to use credit.

RE: How do you afford your toys? CASH or CREDIT
After over 60+ yrars of Model Airplane Building and Flying, I can HONESTLY say;
Cash from my Hobby Stash or my PayPal Funds if ordered on line. I've Never used a Credit Card for my Hobby, and I have never used the Grocery money for my hobby, If I can't pay for it, I don't need it. If I need it, and I don't have the money, I'll have to wait until I have the Cash.
This Hobby has been good to me and for me for a very long time, mainly because I have never had to feel Guilty about where, what, or how the money was spent.
Ken
