Best Smoke Oil?
I have just started to use the Tams smoke system in my Wren Turboprop. I used Super Dri Aviation Smoke Oil. It was terrific. Huge volumes of brilliant white smoke.
The only problem is the cost.
Here in australia it works out to about A$40 for a US gallon (3.75 litres).
has anyone got a recipe for a good substitute that is a bit cheaper but just as effective?
Also because the Super Dri is clear it does not leave a dirty residue. I have the turboprop in a Carden 35% Extra and any residue will stain the sides and wings of the model.
All suggestions of what you have used welcome. Or is it possible to buy it in larger quantites. I cant imagine the full size guys using it in 1 gallon bottles.
Regards

RE: Best Smoke Oil?
Tom,
Super Dri is by far the best !
Ive tried all possible homebrews and nothing comes even close to Super Dri.
From my experience straight diesel is equivalent to any homebrew / mix.
For regular Sunday flying I use straight diesel this is by far the cheapest alternative

RE: Best Smoke Oil?
Hi Xantos,
Thanks, I am beginning to find out exacty that. I guess I will just have to wear the cost. I found a place that sells it here in australia in 19 litre pails. It works out to about A$8 /litre.
I particularly like the clean model after each flight. There are a few droplets on the wing Leading edges and fuse sides. I still have to experiment with the pump. I may be pumping too much oil. The tam pump can be controlled. It sure produces lots of smoke. It is almost like a crop duster!.

Because it is oil based, the prices fluctuate like gasoline/diesel. I see that the wholesale price is up to $41.22 for 5 gal.
Hope that helps.

It looks like the price for the Fastenal Freedom Form Release has gone up a bit since this thread was started.
As of this posting its $75 for a 5 gallon pail.
http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...288&searchMode
That's still only $15/gallon which is half to price of Super Dri.

I use the concrete form release oil as well. Makes smoke just as good as super Dry. Here is video of my F-15 with smoke using the form release oil from Fastenal.

I have been using the B&B smoke oil
http://www.bennettbuilt.com/shop/Smo...allonCase.html
shipped to the door for 63.80 a case of 4 gallons. I did buy a gallon of the Robart from DreamWorks at FJets and it seems to be the same thing in looks and smell.

Check out this link. I have been using this smoke oil which is made by a fellow modeler. Works at least as well as Super Dry and costs a lot less.

Here are my findings:
Diesel: Cheap but also made fireballs on behotech 180gold and 220, will not use because of fire potential, the smoke was not very thick and had low hang time. IMO not a smoke oil.
Aerocumolus: Expensive, Medium Density, LONG HANG TIME. same as Super Dri, this smoke oil did not make as bright or as puffy clouds as super dri, however, it had a much longer Hang time, meaning the trail lasted longer, I tried all different flow settings, still could not get the same white puffiness or desnsity of super dri, but the hang time was very long, something with the hang time of this and the density of super dri would be the ultimate. I found this oil did not burn fully, regardless of what I set the flow settings to be, lots of left over oil.
B&B oil: Similar to aero cumoulus, but even less hang time, out of all the purpose smoke oils, this one was the most dissapointing, smoke density was medium and hang time was short. It was priced nicely at around 17/gallon.
Robart Liquid Sky: Also very similar to B&B oil, medium density, low hang time.
Fasternal oil: Low density, medium hang time. I'm sorry but this simply does not compete with purpose built oils, you can try it but you will have inferior results. It does smoke, but it doesn't work all that well on piston engines. Not worth the price savings.
conosol 260: Have not found a source for this locally, someone said the fasternal form release is the same.
Super Dri: High Density, Medium Hang time, Good burn. Well I tried them all and if you want the best results, Super Dri is the way to go, yes its expensive and blah blah blah, but it makes the best smoke. The quality of smoke is the thickest out of anything I have tried, it burns the cleanest and has good hang time. I wish they could increase the hang time to match aero cumoulus, without loosing smoke density; but if I had to pick I would take the density over hang time.
All test were done on my 1.45 hawk that has a 37" pipe with tamjet Super -J injector, using a slider for the smoke pump to test different smoke flow ratings.
