Lots of people put up photos or videos of the afterburner rings or landing and strobe lights etc. But they are usually in the workshop, or outside in the twilight on the ground. And always with the camera up close. They rarely seem to have photos/video of it in the air in normal bright daylight at normal flying distance. I once fitted a model with a lighting system that came with hazard warnings not to look at it as it was so bright. On its own it lit up the workshop. You couldn't see them in flight! When someone shows video of afterburner rings in flight on a bright sunny day and we can see it, I will believe it.
Ive seen them on bright days ALOT and they look great even at far distances. Not really sure what you are talking about.

I've seen where some guys refer to the high intensity LED's as "strobe LED's"...I can't find anything labled as such....Where do you find the highest intensity LED's that the commercial guys are using on their AB rings???...The ones we need are size 5mm and rated in MCD...(Millicandella)...I have some 30,000 MCD white LED's but I'm looking for orange/amber, red, and yellow high intensity LED's..

These are too large...The AB rings on Todd's site look like standard 5mm LEDs...They aren't Luxeons...Plus, at the price that Luxeons go for the AB ring alone would cost over $400 just in LEDs...

First flight test of my system today went well - the lights are very visible in flight.

Video coming soon.

Well I saw one today for real at the classic jet meeting at Abingdon, it was clearly visible and impressive even at a long distance, though it was a dull cloudy winter's day. I would still like to see it on a bright summer's day to be totally convinced!

On the ones I have seen so far, Tor's (icepilot) for example, you are not able to see each LED individually as they are extremely bright, the ones on Lior's last picture looks very dull if I may say so.
I don't think they will be very bright in sunlight ?

I know many may not agree, but I think that the AB rings would look cooler if they were a very light purple tone, almost white. Then fly it in the afternoon.

....depends on what effect you want to reproduce.....

Most are yellowish:

The purple/blue-ish can only be seen by night when the cameras dont get it....

Exactly, I've always thought that the LED AB rings would be a better application for flying late in the afternoon, or on a cloudy day. For days like these a light purple ring would look absolutely awesome.

Hey guys,

here is a short video from the first flight test today:

Apperantly the camera man was a little drunk but you can still get some good shots of how very visible this unit is in flight. and this is only 1 small ring. if i had used double rings it would have been even better.

Production starts soon ! anyone interested in pre-ordering a set from the first batch please email me at: [email protected]

thanks.

If you take a look at this video, there are 4 clips of my F-16 and one clip is a real F-16 - I would say the colors match exactly!

Good point Falconwings! I wonder if its possible to have different color tier which are brought into play by throttle position? would be more convincing to have a varying effect even at one point having a blend which transitions to the final color?
