I have been working like a crazy here, lots of stuff finished. Less than 3 weeks until painting (the plane will be completely finished before painting). After the paint/decoration/weathering has been done, I will receive the plane at our annual "JetCamp" here in Denmark, final assembly then in the first days, and hopefully maiden at the end of the week
Received a package (the first of two) from Ralle (tailormadedecals) with stickers etc for the plane, next box from him is with the paint

All surfaces/servos are now connected and finished, the shells over the flap hinges are also glued (using some of the nice tips from GBR jets/Marc Scully)
On the radio tray I reserved some extra space for a double valve if it becomes necessary (a seperate for the nose, and a seperate for the mains).

thought i would share some detail pics of my hawk. i burned in all the scale rivets. it really adds to the looks of this beast for me. what a pleasure she is to fly. just put the 20th flight on her this weekend. barry

Can you tell a little about your CG, it looks from the pictures that you don't have the detailed cockpit from Tomahawk in it ?
I would be very interested if you perhaps has the CG location, or even better the weight on the frontwheel without fuel ?

Barry, thought I would pass this along. Scott got his electric retract problems sorted out and they worked flawless this past weekend. Many flights were put on the Hawk at Mt. Pleasant without any hiccups.

carsten, i do have the cockpit. she just wasnt in for the pics. my cg is slightly nose heavy with no weight added. i might move the batteries around a bit. but she flies so nice, i may not.

bob, that is good news. however, mine works perfect with the air system in installed. i am going to leave her the way she is. barry

How do you attach the sides in the cockpit to the sides of the fuselage ?
If you get a chance, can you do me a favor and measure how much the frontwheel "weights" ?

Carsten,

One method is to glue a 2 mm 5 cm high balsa strip along the entire upper (out)side.
Velcro patches are then glued to the balsa and to the inside of the fuselage.

To Barry:
the right hand panel of your rear cockpit should be on the left hand side. The arched part is the throttle base.

Thanks for the tip Remco, I will do something with velcro also, makes it easy to remove again (for service etc)!!

I have now all the doors installed, I did struggle a little with the small MLG door, it is still a little "flimsy", not closing perfect on the leading and trailing edge of the door, but that will have to do for now (less than 2 weeks until painting...)
I shot a small video of the main gear working, after I did some lubing of the retract mechanisms and a very little adjustment of the bar that moves in the slot of the retract, they now come down without a loud "bang"
The doors close with a delay of 10 seconds right now, maybe that can be lowered a little, but for some reason, retracts normally takes 5 times as long to go up when flying than on the bench

How much down elevator (if any) do you use with the two settings of flaps ??

And have you changed anything with regrads to the travels in the manual
Elevator +46mm / -35mm
Rudder +/- 45 mm
Aileron +27mm / -18mm
Flaps -47mm and -75 mm

And, can anyone please let me know if they can measure the weight of the nosewheel when the plane is without fuel in the maintank ??

Hi Carsten,

Yes, in my opinion it's necessary to make everything removable.
I'm still building, presently installing the cockpit, and some additional details.
Will post some pictures soon.

What kind of adjustment did you make on the bar (main gear)?

P.s.: be careful when using the weight-on-nose wheels trick to make sure in what attitude this was measured. Ten degrees up or down makes quite a difference.

Remco, I have no restictors on the gear at the moment, Thomas (Tomahawk) recommended to use a GR-QS-4 Festo restictor (reduces flow in one direction, free flow the other direction) on the "gear down" line to reduce the "knocking" when gear is going down.

I know about the weight stuff, I think the difference would be very low at modest angles (the CG is close to the "rotating point" of the main wheels, 10 degress is only 2 % less weight)
It could be really nice to get some figures by some of the "flying guys", if at the same time they would mention how high the nosewheel is when measuring. I know from the German forum that Andreas thinks that around 850 gram is sufficient, if I put the CG where it is in the manual, I will get around 1000 gram on the nose...
Even better would ofcourse be a precise CG number from a flying model, I have a feeling that the numbers in the manual are conservative...

Is it correct that there is no "hingestuff" etc with the kit for the small nosedoor, or is it just me that can't find it....
I guess a form of offset hinge is needed on this one, the SG hawk in Marc Scully buildthread is "just" hinged with some small brass hinges, but as far as I can understand, this is not possible on the THawk because the frontleg almost touches the bulkhead and the cover on the nosestrut is actually going "behind" the edge of the bulkhead/skin ?

Hi Carsten,

Correct, you have to make this yourself.
The T-Hawk guys simply glue the small door to the nose gear, hence the "black hole" when the gear is up as the small door leaves an opening.

Carsten - amazing building speed. Nice work!

I had some new springs and an adjuster kit turn up for the Hawk mains from Thomas last week... along with a 1.9 futura!

Havent fitted them but hopefully they will solve the problem.

Done a far bit on mine - some shots soon.

Not sure Roy - was about to email you a shot of the springs and adjuster. Might be best to contact Thomas. As I said I havent fitted them as yet.

What is this upgrade on spring guys?

Sorry my Futura and parts for the Hawk showed up and I left on Holiday for a few days.

I asked Thomas about the springs in an email a month or so ago and they just turned up with the Futura kit. Comprises of four springs, 2 soft and 2 hard and what looks like a height adjustment setup. This M5/6 bolt on a sleeve with a lock nut to adjust height.

Will photograph and post as soon as I am back on deck.

So the Hawk is finally finished, almost exactly 2 months since I picked it up
Had a friend visit me for a few days (Kasper Holger "CarbonCustoms"), was really nice to have one to help with the last details (the cockpit has quite some work in it!), he was also helpfull when checking CG and so [8D]
It will now go to painting, anf if all goes well, maiden in 3 weeks time

PS: I have also ordered the new main gear spring set, not yet received though

I would really like to thank all of you guys, I have had huge help from you all, Craig Abbott, Scott Marr, Remco, Marc Scully, Mark Schoeder and Maikel Butler (hope I didn't forget any!) and of course Thomas from Tomahawk Design, as well as all the other persons who have contributed to the thread about this marvoulus plane
