Ultra bandit almost ready for test flight.
I picked this kit up from Al's Hobbies about 4 weeks ago (he did me a real good deal!)Although the manual says 60 hours from box to air what you see here is after about 160 hours work and I really did think I built stuff quite quick...
I powder coated the struts and got the wheels anodized black. I did this for two reasons. 1: because this was going to Ali's own plane and he was going to do the same, so it will wind him up. 2: I recon it looks cool and just a little different.
After watching David Shulman fly two U.B's one with a P200 and the other with an Olympus back to back at the FIJR a couple of years ago, it was clear the Olympus had the better vertical so that’s what I have fitted.
I quite like the Orbit Power Jack. It plugs straight in to the Futaba 14 channel RX and allows for two power inputs and regulates the receiver and signal power to 5v. After much deliberation I have fitted A123 packs straight to the PowerJack through 2 Smart switches. Bennie has also set the Olympus ECU to run on A123 cells for me too.
After reading about some problems with UAT's restricting fuel flow on larger engines I have made one with larger 4mm I.D fittings. I also drilled out the std BVM aly main tank fittings to 3mm and the centre tank has a 4mm I.D fitting and I also made a 4mm I.D clunk. It all seems to work really well.
So just a few more jobs to do on it like fitting the second canopy after wrecking the first.. Nightmare job!

It seems I have been bitten by the RCU big pic bug so I'll post them on different posts.

Lookin' Good!!
Make sure to run up your fuel system on the ground at a full throttle equivalent from full tanks to assure yourself that you won't entrain (by cavitation or entrapment of) air by your hungry Oly!
I'm itching to put more flights on my Ultra B!

You know, I am surprised and really shocked that BVM would let us put our $20K plus jets up without being REALLY clear about the fuel draw issues. He just "hints" at it with an addendum about adding a second vent on the header tank. []

Thats an amazing bird ! which servos are in her ?
Will the Orbit jack handle the high current draws without effecting the reciever ?

It has JR 8911 (Or 8711 in the US) servos.
The powerjack is supposed to supply a steady 5v to the RX as long as the packs are above that.

yes, I fueled it right up and set fueller so that drained the system through the airtrap in less than 5 min. Worked perfectly.
thanks

Hey Jason,
Great job on the UB! Looks like you chose all the right equipment to outfit your #1 bird!
The powerjack looks like a neat new (new to me since I hadn't seen one before) concept.
Good call on the fuel system, that motor will take all you can give to it for sure.
Keep an eye on the canopy hoop as you'll tend to remove and install the giant canopy hatch by grabbing the clear plastic, with higher speeds the lone hoop can tend to cause alittle vibration, I used some silicone on mine (prior to its spectacular demise) to secure it to the clear plastic.
Best of luck with it all, I'm sure it will quickly become your favorite.

Ha ha, yea those are always a good thing, they seem to help increase the flow to feed that monster motor!
Oh yea, balance I used was remove the canopy (UAT full) and it should rest on the nose, slight tap to lift the nose and the tail should touch and stay. If you need down trim with full flap you could have too much flap or be too tailheavy - just my opinion, what do I know about UB's anyway? lol

The Powerjack we supplied Jason is designed to take the load off the RX board. It weighs only 20g, the MPX connectors supply high current to the device, the servos get what ever voltage the batteries are giving, servos signal is to 5v and the receiver gets 5v from the Low-Drop regulators.

Enjoy the maiden flight whenever it comes, pay careful attention to that sprung door make sure it cannot slip off the leg and jam in any way,,,,,,,, don’t ask.

David, yes I'm really happy with the Futaba FASST, it just seems to work! The Powerjack came from Motors and Rotors, he seems to be the only UK stockiest. In theory it should be a good addition to the Futaba RX.
I'll make sure I glue the canopy in very well.
Thanks for the CG tips too.

Just took a look and I can see what you mean. It will be fine at the moment but after a few flights it may move sideways allowing the strut to jam. I'll fit a wider strip of polyply to the plywood to stop it happening.

Hello Jason!
Great job on the UB.. [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
I used some silicone and Bvm poly ply screw to secure my UB canopy.
see pictures!

Hi Jason,
Great job,I can only dream about instalations that good! By the way who taught you to take pictures that good?
Missed you at L Marston Monday great day, two flight lines, a load of blokes shooting birds and microlites to contend with.
Good luck, see you Monday. Mike T.
