Dave,
Just started following this thread, been so long since I built my T-33 I know I forgot how I did it. Started as a ducted fan in 1995 then converted a few years ago to a Wren 54 Mk III. Love the small turbine in this airframe, weighs 20 pounds and lands just as well as it did with the ducted fan.
If I built it again, and yes I to have a T-33 kit sitting here waiting for the build day, I would definitely spend more time sealing the formers and the inside of the f/g with paint. My bird is so oil and kerosene soaked the glue on the coverite presto just along the bottom softens right up, can't get it to stick anymore.
2nd change, more attention to the locating dowels for the tip tanks, I just drilled in to the balsa tips, well those holes are worn out, time for me to sleeve them with something a bit more substantial.
All of BV's improvements over the years, they really have made this airplane more durable and enjoyable to fly. His latest landing gear, well, that has been on of the best improvements I ever made to this plane.

The wing is obeche sheeted foam with a nylon strip embedded direct from BVM. I could not tell you anymore as to how it is done. My photos were only to show the process I used that keeps the hinge area free of resin while the wings are being glassed.

I do know that the tip tank sockets now have aluminum tubes as part of the install. From your comment, it would seem to be a necessity. After a conversation with Bob, he informed me that the gear doors have also had an improvement. They come pre cut and the double layers are also factory bonded. I do understand your comment on sealing the plane, and for now, I am satisfied with using thin CA to wick into the wood. I feel confident in the joint between the formers and the glass fuse with method, and know that there is no paint in between the bond. Once the plane is built, I may still put some paint inside the assembled fuselage, but I will decide this later.

While I am impressed that you offered to bring your own refreshments Dave, as a host, I promise you will be taken well care of. I have a fridge in my workshop. As for the color scheme, I have chosen the Canadian silver 261 as my choice. Not only do I love the scheme, but my dad flew 266 a few times, so it seemed very fitting to go with this one. 261 was beautifully restored, but unfortunately it hit a tree on takeoff and was lost. The pilots were ok, but not a very happy ending. Please remind me on maiden to ensure all trees are removed from the flight path.

Motivation time, won't be long and you to can be out having fun flying that T-33. Here's mine, great plane. Not sure but I thought the version your modeling is the same plane, repainted to the scheme your modeling. Shame the full scale bird isn't around anymore.

Default RE: BVM T-33 Build

I have a question regarding the flap portion of the build. I have read the instructions and looked at the plans a hundred times, but something is just not adding up. As you can see from the photos, the hinge line of the flap is recessed 1/16” compared to the aileron to accommodate the vertical filler strip, and this concurs with what the plans show. The problem is that with the wing in place, this should all line up with the panel line on the fuse wing stub, but it does not. The 1/16 strip is just sitting there for now as I do not want to make any rash decisions until everything looks right. Logic says that I should cut on the panel line which also concurs with the glass / CF flap bottom sheet. My other question is regarding WF-1 which is the hinge point out at the aileron edge. In the photo, I have it lined up per the instructions where they suggest that the foam be cut away. It seems to be sitting way to high. I would love to see some photos and descriptions to clarify what is going wrong here.

Thanks

Doesn't the bottom of the wing stub get cut away so that the flap is one piece? Perhaps this will result in the matching up of the lines etc. I have the BVM F-80 and it's the same wing. I havent started building it yet but i seem to recall seeing this section in the plans.
Hopefully some will come along with all the right answers

Packing the T-33 for FJ's, so while its out I got you a picture of my outer flap hinge install, circa 1995, didn't have that tab that's on your rib.

Well the flap install problem appears to be that the aileron / flap hinge line was miss cut at the factory. You can even see in one of the photos, that the hinge lines are not even parallel. To salvage this, I ignored the fuselage panel lines and the wing hinge line, using the carbon fiber flap bottom as a template and made a new flap hinge line into the wing and fuselage stub where everything seemed to fit. The final spot, move the hinge line up about 1/8”, but the trailing edge and radius on the fuselage looks good now. My happiness was short lived though, as there were a number of parts missing from the flap assembly bag. The assembly bags are well packed and sealed, but when all the parts are not in the bag, the seal doesn’t help much. With this minor setback, I decided to proceed with the aileron install while I was waiting for BVM to send the missing parts, but low and behold the aileron assembly package was missing as well. They say when you first get the kit, to check that you received everything, but they do not give you a check list of what is in the box. That would seem to be a simple improvement to the kit. Unfortunately, you won’t know that anything is missing until you get to that page in the book. I guess mine was made on the Friday of a long weekend.

In order to keep on working I am going to move on to the stab and rudder assembly, and hopefully have better success.

Dave, when I checked my F-80 kit I asked the same question, that is: how do you know whats not there if you don't know whats supposed to be there.. AKA a packing list. I told Patty that they really do need a packing list and she agreed.

I'm glad you're getting things sorted out

Well I started on the tail section, and the process is very much the same as I did on the wing when it comes to glassing. As Bob describes in the instructions, the string method of keeping the live hinge free of epoxy works like a charm. I also like putting a patch of balsa on the opposite side to keep the controls rigid. It’s very easy to remove after you have finished glassing, and makes the task easier.

One of my biggest complaints with BVM since the beginning of this build was that they could use some work on customer communication. I have addressed this issue with Bob, but some things just never seem to change. It has been a few weeks now since I both emailed and had a conversation with them about the missing parts, and the inlet fence diverter, but I still do not get any update on whether the parts are being made, sent, or what the status is. It takes very little effort to send an email, and it shows the customer that you have not been forgotten.

I should have the 2 coats of resin completed soon on the tail surfaces as things on the here seem to be going well.

Funny you should bring this up Gaz. In Canada, we have 2 seasons. Building and flying. Unfortunately now that that the snow is here to stay, building season has started. I hope to have the time to get back to the T-33 in a week or two. That will account for the Christmas parties and all.

Hi Dave,

I am resurrecting my thread and part build of erm, well nearly 6 years ago, I have two seasons two, those with money and those without!!!!! Mine is being unmothballed as I write and hopefully will get round to it in the new year, I am actually quite excited, a little extra patience should have happened in my head now, but it was great to get as far as I had, with I must say lots of help from here, anyone else doing a thread will have my full attention!!!

Look forward to sharing exploits!

Well 2 years later.... guess what.... yep no change!!!

What about anyone else. I did speak to a really great guy in Liverpool about building it for me, but again, money is the issue.......

I just need to start and do things, it should come together, I guess???

So is this the longest build thread ever, 8 years so far and still not much past the basics!!

Ha. Ha. Gasser that's the way these kits go sometimes. I just bought one a month or so ago and plan to do it this winter. Maby. Ha. I do need the saddle tanks to complete this kit but in no hurry for them. Mabey we will see someone pop into your thread that has done one lately.

It’s funny how time passes in this hobby. Living in Canada, you have a limited flying season and there seems to be an event every weekend that you want to go to. That leaves winter to build, but you get all these great ideas during the summer that distract you. The main reason that I put a halt to the T-33 was the change to our flying site. It has some bumps dead in the middle that don’t bother others in the club, but I know that the this bird is not going to be happy with them. I see my kit every day going into the workshop, and sometimes I even take a closer look at the parts. I know this will be a great plane to fly, I just wish my flying site was more conducive to it. Good to hear from some of you guys still. Sometimes that is the kick in the pants to get moving again.

I parted with my kit right around the time Hooker53 got his. . Still interested in this thread as I'd love to still build one in the future.

Here's a clip on how Ralf modified the flap boards and it looked like a really nice alternative. I was going to follow his example.
