My JL Mig 29 has now flown, the Czech camoflage works great against a typical English grey autumnal sky, you can't see it! This, my friends have told me is the reason why the maiden was so smooth! So I had just the one flight last weekend in those conditions, and put on 5 more yesterday in superb conditions. The model is a trainer, easier to fly than a F15, and yet when you open up the taps it goes well and looks the part. The gear has worked flawlessly so far, and has a vey scale like look to it. One niggle is that when there is no air in the system the gear drops down. I have made locking pins on the main and nose gear doors to keep them up.
I have a problem with the Jetronic valve on the doors. This releases the air after 15 seconds to save air. Nice feature in the right application, but I can't figure out how to turn this off. The doors then open in flight, and whilst they seem fimly fixed in place now, I am risking ripping them off. There is clearly lots of drag as it slows the model noticebly.
This is a lovely model a definate keeper.
Sadly, no one in my club seems to own a camera so no flying shots so far. A few static ones from last weekend though.

looks like the Mig is going to be the new L39 of Elvington, yours did look good yesterday John, you and Jeff need to get some formations flights in.

Much more intersting than the L39 though. By next year we should have 3 on the go. That will make an intersting formation. I am looking into getting some lights for it now. Bit hard to see with my old peepers against the grey sky last weekend.

Yes sure is a lot more intereting than the l39 ! I was thinking of using the sm services lighting system ! The emitters are quite bright ! I also have some acrylic to mould the lights from so if you want any doing let me know ! for the landing gear I will just put the 3 emitters on a pressure switch from the nose leg! It will keep me amused over the winter ! Should be good with 3 migs in the air !! Although my colour scheme will put yours and Jeffs to shame !! Lol

i was just wondering how easy it would be to make the front part of the fuse removable for storage, i understand from Jeff that the fuse does come in two parts but as i don't have my mig yet i don't know where it breaks or how much equipment will need to go up front. Am i right in thinking that the fuel tanks are in the front section?

Four bolts hold the front section to the back section. The two fuel tanks are in the front section and are a tight fit. It is not practical to separate the two sections for storage as the majority of your equipment will be in the front section and as a result you'll have air lines and servo wires to deal with if you try to split it for storage. It can be done but not really practical.

Are the 4 bolts accessible, i understand that there will be a few connections to break to remove the nose but i only want the nose removable for storage not field assembly, so i don't mind if it takes awhile to remove.

Hi Carl,
No you can't get to the bolts once the tanks are in. I think that there are other statergies to make the model more transportable. I remove the tailplanes and you could do the same with the fins. It is conceivable that you could remove the nose cone with a razor saw to make it demountable, al la the composite one.

As the bolts are not accessible, there is no point in trying to make the front removable.

If the weather holds out for sunday will you be bringing your Mig? I would like to take some photos if thats ok, just to give me some idea of equipment placement to get the C/G some where near.

Sorry guys, but the bolts are accessible. I had a leak in one of my tank lines right at the tank and I removed the 2 center line bolts through the nose gear door opening, The 2 side bolts are accessible through the main gear door openings. This is not theory; I just did it yesterday. In fact, I removed both tanks by separating the nose only about 4/5" while leaving all the air lines and servo wires in place. By twisting the nose at about 30/40 degrees, I was able to remove both tanks while leaving all wiring and air lines in place. This will save several hours on reassembly.

Now, with regard to storage. Yes, you can do what you suggest for winter storage. If this is what you want to do, it can be done. At the fuse separation point when you build the airplane I would have all servo wires and airlines fitted with a disconnect device that is accessible when the fuse is separated 3 or 4 ". If all wires and lines are marked, it wouldn't be that difficult to reassemble, maybe 3 or 4 hours.

Happy flying, its a very visible airplane.

Yes Rob, I think you are right. I can't see the side bolts on mine, but I realise that this is because of the balsa & ply frames made to hold the tanks in firmly. If these where not there I am sure you could see the bolt heads. If this is taken into account when building, it should be possible.

I went for a German camo scheme, i will find a photo and post it.

Yes i am using all spektrum servos apart from the stabs as i got some of the 20kg savox servos bloody cheep on ebay, plus they come with metal arms, i will pm you the link to them, they even have free P&P.

i don't fancy plastic arms on the stabs as the push rob is not in-line with the servo and i can see it causing some flex in the plastic arms

Nice Carl, u painting it? Have you used the Savox servos before, I need a shed load of new decent quality servos and these seem to have a reasonable reputation.
