Hysol - Control Horns
I'm about to finally get started on a build of my first jet. Anything special you guys do when gluing the control horns in?
I also read that the longer 6" nozzles don't give a good mix. Is that something I need to worry about? I purchased the hysol glue gun and cartridges from Dreamworks - it came with the longer 6" nozzles.

Make sure you scuff up the control horns with say, 80 grit sandpaper first, then wipe clean with some rubbing alcohol before you glue them into the surfaces. Makes for a good bond. Leave a little fillet where the horn meets the control surface.
As Harley says, use the long ones.

Thanks! What is the best way to prepare the area inside of the control surface?

Simply layout and route a slot for the horn (working carefully to avoid penetrating the upper skin of the control surface) and after preparing the horn surface with 80 grit or something rougher, like a Dremel with a ball mill or a coarse sanding drum, clean with alcohol, mask the area surrounding the horn, and inject the Aeropoxy to almost fill the slot. Coat the horn, and fill all of the holes in the faying surface with glue, and insert the horn. Clean up any excess adhesive with "Q" tips and alcohol. Check it for proper alignment, and allow the adhesive to cure. Remove the masking just before the adhesive turns to stone....otherwise, the masking tape might become more or less permanent.
Here's some photos of how it's done:

use the gun and mix thoroughly (like you would old school epoxy) or use the purpose designed nozzles. short or long both are sold for the purpose of pre-mixing but will generate a tremendous amount of wasted material
enjoy and congrats on your first jet build
cheers

Hi,
I love the nozzles for hard-to-reach applications and hinging; plus they make bulkhead installation so fast. The nozzle can last up to a couple of days in the freezer if you put it in there right away. The cold slows the process down to a crawl, and depending on how much gluing you're doing, you could go through a couple of tubes and only waste one nozzle's worth.

Mixing by hand is the best way to get the best value out of the tubes of epoxy, rather than using the nozzles I buy 100 or so 10ml syringes, dirt cheap and scoop the mixed aeropoxy into them to apply - If you use Q-tips (cotton buds) heated and cut you get very fine applicators which can be fitted to the end of the syringe with a short piece of cheap silicone fuel pipe, a bead down to 1/2mm is possible for delicate jobs if needed.

Last 2 posts = AWESOME "hints and tips" for hysol use..
We REAAALLLLYYY need a sticky at the top of the jet section for posts like this for those to add to... It would be such a huge help for all the experienced guys to put their ideas in one central place for all to see.

There is a RCU forum just for those kind of things...It's called ''Tips and techniques''.
Check it out....

Yea, and the problem is, it takes FOREVER sorting through tons of posts looking for 1 thing that is worthwhile for jet guys typically need. And then most of the threads are completely over-run with need-less chatter about how good/bad a technique works...
