looks great!!!!

how the drive system looks like??

The drive system uses 2 high torque servos driving 15 CF pushrods in a set of concentric rings. The transfer system in the tailcone is pretty close to the way the real F-16's system works (minus the hydraulics of course)

You can see a picutre of the actual drive system on the website. Total weight of the system is 31 oz.

Hello:

Very pretty system, but why no use an only ring for hold the 15 pushrods near the nozzle and with the 2 servos you could move it. Not ? It more easy that use 15 pushrod too much long. Or it is only the prototype ???

I think.

Best regads from Spain.

My guess would be for weight distribution and torque advantage... I like the idea of avoiding a tail heavy airplane, I'm in...
I guess one could reduce the rod size and position the transfer ring based on there CG requirement.
Either way the best Scale Nozzle ever to hit the Market ! Can't wait to see it with his new 1 amp afterburner light system...

Great Job as usual Dan...

Carlos,

Phil is exactly right about the weight distribution. The overall weight of the entire system is 31 ounces. To put the entire weight of the unit further back would mean more than doubling the system weight to the airframe by adding weight to the nose to balance the tailweight offset. The other advantage of the long pushrods is to balance the torque requirements of each individual turkey feather. In other words, the rod lengths become less critical as the nozzle moves since the rods can deflect slightly if one turkey feather needs slightly more torque than the others. The resulting deflections absorb the extra forces so that the entire unit moves as one piece without applying too much or too little force to each individual turkey feather. So, when first setting up the unit in the aircraft, the nozzle is in the fully closed position; this allows the nozzle to close properly when the pushrods are in tension. Believe me, in the year+ I have been working on the system, it has gone thru several transfomations to get tho this point. Like Edison, I could tell you MANY ways how NOT to make a scale nozzle system...LOL...

I'm glad you guys like the unit; my thanks to everyone for the past moral support! I nearly gave up on it a few times...

Dan

Very impressive! Did the water vapor afterburner idea get thrown out?

The water vapor pulse injection system is still on the design table. I'm still experimenting with the emitter colors and programming for the best combination with the vapor. I hope to have one at Kentucky Jets in July.

Dan, that thing is absolutely AMAZING!! How hard would it be to adapt Different tailcones to it? I think these should be an option for the F-14 i'm working on

Thomas,

The F-14 tailcones are completely different than the F-16. The F-14's turkey feathers actually retract into the fuse when opening, so the F-16 units wouldn't be correct. I'm quite familiar with the F-14's actual system, so making the unit function wouldn't be a serious issue. In fact, the F-14 unit is much easier than the F-16 system. It would still be a lot of work, but no where near the hair pulling I went thru on the F-16 nozzle.[8D]

Hey Dan, nice job.
Why dont you start all those projects for the F-16 1/8 scale?
BTW, where is the thrust tube gone?
Should it be cut flush with the operational nozzle at the point where it is fixed to the fuse? I mean, is the operational nozzle capable of replacing the last portion of the thrust tube just to work as in real scale?

The tail pipe ends up 1/2" short of the nozzle end. Eventhough the nozzle is made from carbon fiber and high temp resins, it's no match for the 600-700 deg C coming out of the exhaust. The scale nozzle is just a working scale replica of the real F-16 nozzle. In order to make the nozzle fuctional (like the real one) the weight penalty would be too high and the cost would be crazy expensive.

Looking good Dan.

Can you put one on my F-16I as well? I was planning to stop by later this month to pick up the Jet.
