i have a intro that i've been flying for a few years now. i'm flying it with a p-70. the max speed i get with no dive but a flat run is 160. it is completely stock and i'm having no issues at all with the airframe as of yet. IMO you can't overpower and push a balsa built, plastic covered plane to far. i have seen time after time guys putting monster engines in these models and then wonder why they self destruct in the air , besides the fact that you are only supposed go 200 max per AMA rules. if your going to blame the airframe for defects , that's ok , but give us proof and not just a pile of wood and covering. my 2 cents , WB_1

Believe that one should never forget the smal mishaps that happen once in a while (hard landing, running out of runway, transportation bumps...) where apparently no harm is done to the surface but could easily result in weakening internal structure ( crack in a critical area) who could turn into desaster at a certain point of time if exposed to additional stress would fail and result in loss/injury etc...

Hidden problems are somehow much more dangerous then apparent ones!!

Were you able to establish precicely where on the airframe the failure occured ? I spot for Paul who has expressed his concerns with his model on this thread. Ron.

No Ron, we did not. We believe it was a wing as one wing was COMPLETELY smithereens - like a million floating pieces-. Hard to tell, happened so fast and it was all in the air so by the time everything hit the ground from 200 feet up at 100+ MPH, there was tons of damage due to impact with ground too.

As Shaz stated earlier, there was not much left for forensics...

The plane literally exploded(non cumbustably) in air. There were pieces/parts fluttering for 5 min's, and spread for 100yrds+/-

As I can remember, from looking at the debris, The wings would be my biggest concern.

As I have read here, and heard from others, I would certainly seal/wrap the leading edges, as well as checking the guillotines, as these can loosen(the structure around them), allowing air into the wing cavity...

Otherwise,...Good Luck! These look like really nice planes, and I wish I had one!

Apparently u are late to the party and have not reaad the entire thread. First, this is not an isolated incident. Second, there is never anything left to examine after this type of failure.

But thanks for playing.

I have seen this happen before many years ago with full composits jets, if you get a zilions pieces raining down I will say it was, was one of the wings that gave up and quit flying (leading adge balsa came loose), this is the same result that is been told in this thread again and again.

Now, I like to hear of any other suggestion to improve the XL Boomer other than that I think I'm done here, moving on,

I learn a lot from this thread, Thanks to sskianpour.

If you were going level, it was probably flutter. Flutter tends to happen when ocscillating loads get between both sides of flight controls and the servo or linkages cant hold it. If I had a big boomer, I would take hinge tape and seal the gaps. simple but extremely effective in prevention of the flutter.

If the wing or tail is loaded in a maneuver and it explodes, then often, but not always, its an overstress of sorts.

That said, I saw my elan begin to split on the leading edge. so If I owned a big boomer, I would lay monokote over the wing lead edges and make sure the center secction is sound. My fiberglass fuse on the elan split right down the leading edges. It was flying funny and Ben burden saw it and told me to land it. thats when we found split leading edge and stress cracks in the tail stab.

I know it was only a matter of time before it went.

dont know if that helps, but the big boomer has alot of surface area and can generate tremendous loads on the wings. More so than the Elan I believe.

Since I'm in the final steps of completing the rebuild of my Boomer XL I appreciate all the info I got from this thread, I got this Boomer with some gear damage about 10 months ago and I have been implementing all the modes to make it safer, Leading edge tape, wing inspections, monokote replacement where needed, how hard not to fly her, gap tape and more.

Some pics, maiden schedule for the 4th of July, we also have a BBQ planened that day
