Skymaster F-16 1/8 third flight
Hi:
Not too much luck in this flight.
This morning after almost one month waiting for cross wind to be calm, I decided to take my F-16 to the field for its third flight after repairing the lanfing gear from a hard landing during second flght.
Windsock was indicating a 90° wind direction but at no more than 5 mph which was acceptable.
Take off was very nice and flight was also nice. There was no need to trim neither elevator, rudder and ailerons and response was very nice.
Just one thing weird and was the telemetry measured speed. Up wind 120 mph with throtthle at 50% and down wind was 90 mph with the same throttle position, ??? Wind speed was so strong up there up to 40 mph? On the ground we didnt feel any wind stream.
During landing she came with nose up, no flapperons, but speed was very hot. I reduced throttle until minimum was reached knowing that to get max. accelerationa once at minumum, I needed 6+ seconds.
Once on the runway my copilot suggested to abort and I pushed the throttle to max. Approach speed was measured by telemetry up to 70+ mph.
Ufortunately, the jet continued to descend until aprox. 10 inch from the ground and out of runway. I tried to keep it on level flight very close to the ground waiting for the turbine to spool up until I lost she down the hill (our runway is like an aircraft carrier), so I decided to cut throttle.
She hit a small tree with the right wing and did a 180° flat turn and hit the ground.}
I shutted dow the turbine and run down to look for the jet waiting for an explosion and the smoke but she was fortunately resting on the ground in one piece.
The tree just destroyed both wings leading edges but the fuse and all its components including turbine, were OK.
Damage was: Both wings, set of door hinges, one main gear suppor, nose gear supports and nose gear leg (fork broken and spring lost).
Cause of accident: Wind changed direction during landing and she approached with tail wind. This was the reason because 6 seconds wer not enough for relative speed to build up for the jet to climb.
And neihter my copilt and the guy that was reading the telemetree on the laptop (I called him my flight engineer) warned me about wind direction. I was so concetrated on the landing that I didnt, see the wind sock . By the way, is not usual that wind change from cross wind to tail wind during a flight.
Once at home I took the turbine out and cleaned all the inlet duct and turbine FOD. Turbine can was hit by the gear retract cylinder and make it a dent in the rear part of the can.
I turned the compressor and realized that it turned free, so I decided to start the turbine and it worked fine.
Do you know guy which is the fastest way to get a set of wings, and a set of door hinges as soon as possible?
I have three options: Jeff, BVM or MIchel Duran from Chile.
Do yo know which of them has those parts on stock?
Any help will be great.

Guillermo, sorry about your mishap. What worries me a bit is that you are paying a lot of attention to the telemetry wich gives you only air speed. While you need 100% of your attention in landing the plane in wich you need to estimate ground speed, sink rate, angle of attack, wing direction changes, throttle management, plane position in relation to the centerline, wing inclination, etc.. of course, this is just my opinion and hope too you have better luck in the next try!

I just paid ayttention to telemetry during normal flight.
While landing, I was not aware about telemetry readings.
I just know the landing speed because I read it from the recorded file after the mishap.
But anyway, as you said, there are many variables to keep in control while flying a jet and she is too fast and the flying time is too short to make adjustments, especially with this type of runway, were landing is a scary adventure.
I am sure that if I have a runway as I have seen on many videos, the story will be different.
But, I will control the beast soon

I agree. Turn off the telemetry and fly the plane, with your eyes.
You can play with that stuff later.

Guillermo, I know how it is to land on that short aircraft carrier. If at all possible can you make it to some airport with permission for a few flights so you can get to know the landing characteristics of the plane?

But I flew my first F-16 22 times from February to August 2.008 when I lost it due to a voltage failure.....
This F-16 is heavier 2 lbs and C.G is at 170 mm while the first one had it at 155 mm but with a horrible tucking tendency wiht fuel tanks full. This F-16 has had no tuccking tendency during the first 3 flights with C.G. at 170 mm.
I think my mistake is that I need to stabilize the jet with nose up and gear down, at least with one complete round circuit prior to landing. That was the way I landed my first F-16 22 times but at this time I have jumped this part of the story.
It was a good practice recomended by Enrique Broens especially for this type of runway.....

Hey Guillermo,
Sorry to hear about the damage to your F-16. I maybe down there sometime soon it seems to fly with our friend, if so, maybe we can work together on some flights and get you setup with that bird.
I know that field real well, not very forgiving! And not much flying can be done past 11am, the winds start to howl pretty good.
Have you guys done anymore work to the runway to clean it up some? maybe resurface it?

Sorry to hear of your damage.
My buddies and I have an agreement if one of us acts as a co pilot.
No talking unless the pilot asks a question.
Its worked well over the 20+ years of trial and error.

In my club, I need to fly my jet hidden from the others because they always are making jokes when some one is flying.......
So I use to fly my jet on Saturdays and my agreement with my copilot is if he see that I am not reacting under a dangerous situation, he will tell me a corrective action. Especially with this jet that is so small an so fast that with the camo color scheme is not easy to see.
And my copilot had in two ocasions, saved my jet when I told him, I cant see she and I don't know what she is doing because is too far.
Now, I use to fly she at half throttle to have more control and fly closer.
