RE: *** Top Gun 2011 & Frank Tiano's Events ***
Whew, I leave the room for a couple of days and look what happened!
I think it is best if you all heard it from the Horse's Mouth so to speak.
First of all, I am leaving the former area of the airport for one reason only. The airport asked me to! They are in process of
bringing in Commercial flights twice a day and Runway 9/27 ( our previous location)must remain open at all times. They offered me to fly from an area near Runway 5 but it is too close to runway 9. They asked me to "pick" a place that would be suitable. I picked one that would be as far away from full scale traffic as possible, for obvious reasons. The fact that the "rent" will revert back to what I was paying in past years is a bonus, but I am investing almost 50K in someone else's property!
The runway is 70 feet wide, 20 feet wider than the taxiway we used previously. It is 800 feet long with 400 extra feet of overrun at each end. The "Grass" is a special Bermuda grass, very thin blades and the underlying surface is going to be as smooth as any hard surface. Anyone who thinks that the runway will be the cause of any damage is absolutely mistaken.
The only way this runway is going to damage any aircraft is if you Crash in the middle of it. So, if anyone doesn't believe that the grass is as good as any other hard surface, I suggest they stay home the first year, see the results posted by those who flew from it, and make their decison from there.
The field will allow flying 1000 feet out in front of you, as low as you like, with no incumberences. There are no restrictions at either end as well. There will be concrete start up areas much larger than we had at Florida Jets. There will be a special return path so that pilots can taxi back into the pit area without fear of a collision with another aircraft. The field will be, in a word, Super! I would NEVER jeopardize anyone's airplane by putting is a subpar runway.
And thanks Boli, for sticking up for me! Smooches, FT

Wow what a change. personally its one that I am really looking forward to.
A wider runway with no restrictions in front.. I cant wait. In Europe we fly from grass allot and I have always maintained that a good grass runway is better than any tarmac surface. It's more forgiving and slows the model down much better.
Also the extra width should be super useful as every year many struggle to keep their model on the narrow taxi way.
I am sure Frank will pull it all together to make another great Florida jets. I for sure will be attending.
Regards Al

I have attended the last 4 Florida Jets and they have all been Great. I fly a 50-pound scale turbine and prefer grass; it is just more fun flying from. Knowing the type of event Frank runs I am sure everyone who attends and fly’s will be pleased. I am looking forward to the change to the new sight. See you there.

Rash statements from Knowall's and a rush to judgement seem to be the order of the day here.......look guys why not wait just a couple of months till Monster Planes , there will be plenty of jets there to test the water (runway) and there will be no shortage of people posting on RCU their well informed opinions ! give the dog a chance !! all of the jet pilots and retract equipped pilots will then be able to talk from experience and formulate a worthy opinion. But surely common sense says you can't convict without first obtaining the evidence.. No matter what your personal feeling towards Frank is, all of you who know him , understand that he does what he says he can do and does it well , and if he says he can do something, he can.. I will be at monster planes with my Giant Super Stearman and my 1/6 scale F16 and I'll see what happens....MK

Well, my Skymaster L-39 (that I bought from Frank, BTW) will be finished soon. I look forward to attending my first Florida Jets in 2011 and flying there. If Frank says the grass will be fine for jets, I have no reason to doubt him. I'll make the trip and give it a go!

I flew 12 flights at the Joe Nall with my Lightning...full fuel...full smoke and taking off uphill. Now, is anyone of you don't know how much a fully decked out Classic Lightning with smoke weighs...let me tell you that you will break your back if you ever have to lift it up when topped off and ready to go. I also had 8 flights with my Tucano, same thing...piece of cake.
Frank will have better grass, much smoother and level to boot. It won't be a problem. The Nall has F-15s (both big and small), F-16s, Euros, Lightnings, both Classics and Ultra, BAE Hawks, F-86s, Bandits, Electric Bandits, Ultra Bandits, the Storm Cat...everything was there.

Hi All,
What are the dates for Monster Planes 2010? Also, what is the venue? At the moment, I'm getting a 'page not found' error on the Franktiano.com web site for the Monster Planes page.....

Mark,
On my trailer, which often carries a 3w Bearcat with a Moki 250 is a bumper sticker saying "Real Airplanes Have Round Engines" (which is of course, true!).
But, remember, turbines are round too .. so when the F-15, F-9F or F-18 are in the trailer, no need to change the bumper sticker :-)

I hear you, Dave. Truth is that I fly jets too! But my roots are in the heavy metal stuff. Dave, you ought to try to make it down to Monster Planes. It is an awesome event. I know you come for Top Gun, so why not just come to Florida and hang out until Top Gun?

Ha! maybe when I retire .. or .. if I do it now, I could get "retired" early :-)
Might come down (by airlines) to MP to check out the new site + do some spectating .. too many days away to drive a plane or two down, however fun that might be...
Hope to see you there.

Frank is this where the new area going to be http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um...ed=0CBwQtgMwAA
This is where the light aircraft flew during the SUN-N-FUN. I Demoed a RC turbine flight from there and everything went well, it just needs the grass cut a little better. EAA thought we should be there every year and wanted to include us in to the line ups. I did not have any issues flying there and thought it was a great area to fly.

Sorry for late response. The location in the image is correct. We did some test flying at the new site yesterday and it is awesome!
See you next week!

For those of you who are worried about flying jets at this field, i have to tell you, At monster planes we flew our FB T33 15 times, Scott Mars flew his Futura and the skymaster hawk at least 8 times each, the BVM team flew the T45, the Skymaster T33 and the E bandits and electras a bunch of times without any problem and one last thing, it is a beautiful place to fly. I'm sure everybody will enjoy flying here at FJ and TG.
