What temperatures do you guys fly in?

RE: What temperatures do you guys fly in?
while i don't mind the cold at all as long as there's no wind to go along with it.........I'm gonna have to side with Gordon on this. regardless how hot you get, a few sips of water and 5 min under a shade tent you're cooled off for the most part but once you get cold you're cold all day. i can fly with no problems well below freezing but when it gets below the low 40s with wind my hands don't do what i tell them to do so the flying stops.

I
I fly at two club Livermore and Oakdale, CA. You are so right about September and October around here...just the best weather you could think of to fly in. Like 80 degrees and a little cool in the morning, enough for a light jacket... some years it stays nice right up to Dec.. I fly all winter it's never that cold, but we get wet spells and thats building time.
The funny part about the bay area is we have micro climates. Livermore is 25 minutes away from me it's 10 to 15 degrees cooler that Oakdale. So I watch the weather to know which club to hit. If it's 98 in oakdale it's 88 in Livermore prefect for the summer. In the winter in may be overcast and 65 in Livermore so I go inland to Oakdale and it's 75 and clear... having the two clubs has gotten me so much more flying time and more comfortable.
I fly big EDF's come troll our clubs anytime
grew up not far from you, Ron.
September and October have historically had the nicest Fall weather one could imagine.
After Jets Over Whidbey, I plan to ride my motorcycle to Reno, park the bike at my daughter's house for the Winter, rent a car, and troll the flying sites in the Bay Area for a few days before I travel home.
Where do you fly?
Bob

Our members meet on New Years Day for the first flight of the year. Could be -20 some years, always below freezing.

i can fly with no problems well below freezing but when it gets below the low 40s with wind my hands don't do what i tell them to do so the flying stops. But 32 degrees or lower is freezing. Low 40s are fine.

OMG, how can you guys fly at bellow freezing temperatures? I have never done it. If someone can post a picture so I can show it in my club. It has being 100F in Central Florida for about one month. Now you dont fly the full gas tank, you fly until your shirt is so soaked of sweat that you start dripping. It takes about 10 minutes, then you go to the shade, cool off and up we go into the wild blue yonder.....

Its been in the 90s here lately. And I've been working on top of a brown tin roof; that stuff gets HOT( the screws get pretty hot sitting up there too).

Nothing wrong with taking the wheels off and put skis on. Get a 32 degree day with bright sunshine and calm winds and wear dark clothes warm and toasty. Have a ball.
Give me a day in the 60's to mid 70's F with low humidity and I am a happy camper. The motors run good the batteries will last longer in the electrics. You can move around without drowning in sweat.
Been in the upper 80's with ungodly humidity. A place in the shade with a cold drink is all I am doing for the last few days. To nasty hot and humid to do anything.

Here are shots from New Years Day 2007, Big Sky Flyers Club. Sorry didn't notice this was in the jet forum. I did see a you tube video of a flyer in Ontario flying his jet in a few feet of snow.

-16°C, 31st December 2009 around 13:00, we have about 3 hours of daylight during that time. Amazing what the difference in thrust feels like.
Better bring the water from home!

Like KC, I can fly down to 40 F with no wind which means flying from about April 1 to November 30 here in Wisconsin.....then into the workshop where it is always 70 F and chapped skin dry humidity......
Flew my BVM F-100D mid-day today.....temp 92F, dewpoint 70F, and field elevation of 800 ft, so density altiltude was over 3000ft....really knocks off the performance of the Rhino, but still off in 400 ft of grass......if you drink enough beer and wear a 4 ft Mexi Somberero, you never notice the heat...

RE: What temperatures do you guys fly in?
I recently had an experience that was more than just temperature.
At Jets over Cayley near Calgary, Alberta, we saw daytime temperatures of about 29 C (about 95F) but we were at an altitude of about 4000 ft. Someone said the density altitude at that temperature was about 5500 ft. The turbines sure new it. I figure, when my turbine was actually running, I was at least 25% down on power from what I'm used to. Lots of guys were havgin un-explained flame-outs or throttle-up problems.
It was a great event but the atmospheric conditions were a challenge.

RE: What temperatures do you guys fly in?
Last Sunday I woke up to some strange white puffy things covering the sun. I went out and flew 'till the puffy things went away. First time in 2 months!
I read a news story, I think it was NY or DC?. They said the relentless 100+'heat wave' caused some BBQ propane tanks to explode on the roof of a bldg. What a crock. If that was true the entire Phx area would be ablaze. Starting with my 3 propane tanks sitting in the sun at +120. (That's as high as my therm. goes).

I live in the sunny tropics part of Canada, where we have had temp ranges from +38 C to -28 C
Nothing like a bright sunny, no wind day with 1 meter snow on the ground, and clear blue sky at -25C. The air is really dense and the aircraft respond really well, and fast.
Hot humid days are not really welcome here, but we get them anyway constantly in the summmer (construction season)

RE: What temperatures do you guys fly in?
I have flown in -25C/-13F once and only once. The receiver battery only lasted for one flight, and that was more than my fingers were comfortable with, even with gloves. Last winter it stayed below -30C/-22F for several weeks, so I took a break from flying -40C/-40F is the coldest temp I have seen here. Between 15C/59F and 20C/68F is perfect IMO. No need for a jacket, and not too hot. Anything hotter than 25C/77F is uncomfortable to me. And some of you guys are flying in 100+ F. That is impressive! Maybe I should go to Australia next winter and see if I can learn how to survive in hot weather. I'm just not built for anything more than 25C...

RE: What temperatures do you guys fly in?
I live near orlando. I fly in my back yard, its been HOT HOT HOT. I put my plane and flight box under a tree and go in the house to cool off for a while. I have taken a shower then gone back out for another flight.
