My new jet... test flown today!

I posted a month and a bit ago about my new AD Scorpion... well, it took a few more weeks after to get my Behotec turbine, and the about 2 weeks (maybe 35 to 40 hours total) to get it together and ready to fly.

Today was a good day, put two flights in (after a thorough checking of the radio and other systems) and it flies GREAT! It feels "heavier" than my AD Phoenix, but is lively, tracks arrow straight (only needed some up elev. trim) and response in all attitudes is true and without anything unexpected.

Landings were uneventful, I came in a little hot on #1, but even with out 600' strip it was no problem. 2nd was a greaser and I stopped in just over 1/2 of the strip.

Take off at full power with the JB180G is AWESOME!! No problem to go vertical right afterwards, even loaded with 4 litre of fuel.

Anyhow, I am happy Our flying season is coming to an end... this was a great summer for jets for me, and this was a heck of a way to cap it off.

RE: My new jet... test flown today!

JFYI I am flying this with:

-behotec JB180 Gold turbine, AD supplied pipe, TP 5000 mAh 3 cell pack for turbine controller
-JR 8711 servos on each flap, aileron & elevator
-JR thin wing digital on each rudder
-Spektrum 6030 digital on nose wheel
    -Spektrum 821 on airbrake
-JR analog servo (a good coreless BB one) on gear/brake
-Spectrum 12 channel powersafe receiver with 4 remote antennae, and two spektrum 4000 mAh 2 cell lipos feeding two 10 amp regulators into the receiver
    -Behotec retracts, wheels and brakes

All up dry weight was 23 1/2 pounds.

I didn\'\'\'\'t say it was the plane\'\'\'\'s fault. I said I was blaming the plane.

Well, I am off for the next few weeks and a bit on vacation (camping and so forth with my wife & dog)...and wont be back until the 2nd week of Sept. - Sept here can be hit or miss but we will still of course be flying for a few weeks after I return. But generally, come the end of Sept. the days are windy, cool and wet - with short days (dark just after dinnertime) which leaves just weekends. Then you are lucky to have a decent day thats not raining. Snow in early Oct is not rare.

Believe it or not, in the bush the leaves are already going yellow. We have two seasons here - summer and winter. Our "fall" comes quickly... you can go from wearing shorts one week to having to have a winter jacket on the next.

I will get the Scorpion out though a few more times before I put away my jets for the winter.

Very, very nice Andrew, but I think you are getting lazy. I remember when you used to build your own turbine and design and build your own airframe.

Ha! Those days are not over... but the last several years (ie married) havent left me with quite as much time as I once had But I still putter away with the hobby machine shop and will never stop scratch building.

Thanks for the comments guys - I know the Scorpion will be a great jet in my hangar, hopefully for years to come. I also have the clear canopy/cockpit/pilots kit but it will be a winter project to assemble and paint it up, for next season.

And I hope some day to make one of the US rally's. Now I have a bunch of great flying jets, and a wife that is willing to travel with me - they are just very far to go.

Congratulation Andrew...may you have many flights with the Scorpion. I really like the lines of this Jet, and after having seen Gary Jefferson fly his at KY Jets last year... I can say I really love the sound of it as it slices through the air. Don't know if yours does it, but the one of Gary had a unique howl to it as it went by.

Yup, it has a unique sound for sure. ALso, its different for me as well as the enclosed turbine and exhaust have a very different sound than all my other jets that have the engine mounted externally. I am still amazed at how cool the fuse stays - I ran it quite a bit on the ground to make sure the exhaust was working, and I guess the cold air drawn in and around the pipe keep the back end very cool, almost cold.
