Default Lost another jet flying buddy

After a long hard fight with a weakening heart Barry 'Doc' Grove passed away this morning. His family wishes to thank those of you who have kept him close to your hearts and in your prayers throughout his battle. I remember meeting Barry years ago at our local flying field when I had my BVM F-86 DF. He was eat up with sabre jets, and it was all the fence could do to hold him back. Glad I asked him to come over and check it out. He had been a modeler in his early years but work and family consumed his time. He was passionate about becoming a turbine jet pilot and did succeed with his big boomerang. "Good stuff, man!" is what he would often say, and I think he truly meant it. We're gonna miss you Barry, God Speed. As arrangements develop, we will keep you informed.
Scott

If he was pitting with you at Mississippi Afterburner, 2009, I remember meeting and talking with him for a while... I think he had a Boomerang. A retired geneticist, I think... I'm sorry to hear that... []

I'm really going to miss Barry. He's a good man. He really loved to hang out with everyone at meets. The jet stuff is what brought him back into the hobby. Had it not been for that, I would not have had the pleasure of knowing him.
God speed my brother,
Randy

Barry was one of the most delightful jet jockeys that I ever had the pleasure of joining though outmany jet events over the last several years. Doc was just a very fun person to be around on the flying field, lounge, breakfast, lunch, dinner, parking lot, etc. etc. He will be missed by any and all that had the pleasure of his company.May all his eternal flights be happy landings.

Scott,

Hate to hear it Barry was one of the good guys, fun to be around, loved the jets, and a good cigar!

Godspeed Barry.

It just seems like yesterday we were pitting near Barry at Miss Afterburner. I knew he was moving a little slow but I had no idea how serious his condition was. I guess it's at least fortunate he was able to enjoy his hobby right up to the end. He was a genuinely nice guy and a gentleman to be around.

Please pass on my condolences to his wife and family.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Doc personally, but had corresponded with him on a number of threads, he also obtained some hard to get items for me in the US and arranged for them to be sent over to the UK, he seemed a very good natured and genuine guy and I will miss our bantering on the threads.

Blue sky's and happy landings Doc.

Please pass on our thoughts to his family and close friends; yes it is true that we have lost another flying friend. I never met Doc but I am sure as many that have will feel the loss personally. The extended family of modelers never ceases to amaze me when there is a loss of a friend of how we pull together.

I am gonna miss him. A year or two ago his wife, Barry and I sat in the hot tub at the hotel one afternoon when we got back from flying at Route 66 Jets and talked about issues regarding healthcare and all kinds of crap. Doc was one of the good guys, and Scott, my brother, he loved you and Betsy like his own children. He was the one who called me when the accident happened and you could tell from talking to him how broken up he was. Doc Barry was all right, and though I knew he had problems with his heart I did not know he was doing poorly. Could you let me know the funeral arrangments so I can send something to his wife please.[sm=crying.gif]

Sorry to hear this news. Barry was one of the first jet flyers I met after relocating to the Nashville area in 2007. I met Barry and some of his family, all great people. It was always a treat to talk to to him and enjoy his company. Barry had a way of putting things in perspective and making it all seem okay. It made it easy to enjoy the moment. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Barry was one of those guys that you loved to give a hard time too about the south loosing the Civil War. Barry loved to call me the Damn Yankee and remind me that the south was still the best!

He was always eager to show you his Ham radio collection and followed up by his huge train collection. If you were lucky enough to sit down with him he loved to tell you all the reasons to own a gun, but not just one gun but many!

It was this spring when Nashville flooded and I got a call at 6pm from Barry....Barry said "BEN!" I answered back "whats up Barry!" "I need an Ark!" Barry yelled out over the phone. I told him I would be over to help. When I got there 15mins later I found the Brentwood Fire Dept rowing a boat out to his house to bring him and his family out. when Barry was brought out of the house and on to dry ground he came up to me and and the first things out of his mouth to me was " I got all the jets up high enough I think and all my guns and ammo are in a dry high spot in the house." I looked at him and said " well at least you have all the important stuff taken care of." He looked at me with a smile and said "YEP!"

Well I will miss you DOC and I will always be thinking of you when I finally get to go to that jet meet!

Keep'em flyin' Barry...
What is funny about these pictures I took of Barry was he was unsure of his flying skills like most of us at times that he had Scott plug a buddy box up just as support during these pictures. I gave him a hard time later asking if he needed help to take his training wheels off his jet yet. At first I think Barry was so stunned that he was speech less. After that I was always the DAMN YANKEE! LOL

If he is the one I'm thinking about, he is one I used to talk to on the Ham Radio years back and also answered a few posts he made here. Sad. Sorry for the loss. Seems like he was indeed a great guy. Roy

Man, sure have an empty spot in my heart for Doc and his smile! Sure going to miss that guy! Heck of a man! Everyone will definitely keep he and his wife in our prayers!

John Williams came up with a few photos of Doc when he was up at Bowling Green flying with friends!! Rest well young man!

http://johnwilliams.zenfolio.com/p695291820

I am sorry I couldn't make the service, but was definitely there in my heart!

I can already hear him no lecturing St. Peter at the gates about some historical act or the like!
