Best ball link?
I'm looking for some very heavy duty, metallicball link, with ball bearings. This is for the full flying stab of an SM Mig 29.
Any idea what the best choice is? I prefer to avoid plastic... Thanks Arnaud<br type="_moz" /> |

RE: Best ball link?
They are available as aluminium holders with steel balls, for M3 and M4 pushrods, Aviation Design has them, see www.adjets.com and select the hardware link on the menu. Someone in the USA must stock them or similar with UNC threads that Americans prefer.

I get mine through Conrad Electrical, they are a European company: http://www2.conrad-uk.com/goto.php?artikel=206075 they come in various sizes from M2 ball too M3 female thread, up to M3 ball and M3 female thread, they also have them with Male threads, good site to look through.
Mike EDIT: Forgot that price quoted is for 4 number, so very inexpensive. |
RE: Best ball link?
That's an excellent find Mike, thanks for that.
Can anyone explain the difference between the one Mike linked to and this one from the same site http://shop.conrad-uk.com/hobbies/mo...ts/216429.html |
RE: Best ball link?
Arnaud,
McMaster Carr has a heavy duty 6-32 aluminum ball end and even larger if you need. I used the 6-32 and it is beefy. You can order the 6-32 rod from them in stainless as well, much higher strength. I added carbon tubes over the rod and sandwiched the carbon rod between the ball links snugly. This gives a very robust setup. The hole is 1/8" I believe, which I think fits either a 4-40 or metric bolt. Can't remember without checking. If you need the part numbers for the ball end and rod let me know. I kept the receipt. http://www.mcmaster.com/#ball-joint-linkages/=a6qhhz |

Baldy, thanks for the Conrad link, interesting stuff on there.
I wish we had a McMaster-Carr in the UK [sm=cry_smile.gif] |

Arnaud,
Check this site: www.rcrockcrawling.com they have both aluminum and steel in metric as well as SAE. I've used them on my AirWorld F-5 & SkyGate Hawk. Select the title "Rod Ends" under their Products Listings for 21 different sizes/types. http://www.rcrockcrawling.com/produc...0dfe2046d4d87a David S |

RE: Best ball link?
Guys, thanks a lot for all the suggestions. This is very helpful. I definitely plan to use something larger than our usual 4/40 part this time.<div><div>

I like all the new choices i have.
here is a shot of the ball links that came with my Comp-Arf Lightning. there are two types, one with a longer "flange/edge" and one with a shorter one. it is great as a built in spacer between the dual phenolic control horns. i bought some extra's from Ray Labonte and, Keith Sievers was nice enough to give me a few of the longer flanged ones. 2 questions. 1. the ball is pretty stiff on some of them. how do i get it to be more "loose" without making it sloppy 2. where the heck can you order these-Ray only had a limited amount. thanks-Merry Christmas-Happy New Year. joe |
RE: Best ball link?
Joe,
Not sure where you can get those, but when you find them, let me know! I'm using the same ones in my C-arf Eurosport that has about 3 seasons on it now, and they loosen up over time on their own. |

RE: Best ball link?
Well
Ray Labonte has some-think he ordered 50 or so of the ones with the "short" little projections out side of the ball. one of the websites in this post showed some "Heim" joint, that looked similar. i see someone sent a partial message, perhaps it was to to make the ball a bit looser? thanks Merry Christmas. joe |
