C&C Model M346 build and painting thread

8 Attachment(s)
Today I got everything together to start the latest Pinnacle Aviation build. The kit is the new C&C models (Italy) M346 and will be powered by a Jetcat P160. The model was supplied in white which is straight out of the mould. It needs a little work to replace some of the detail that's been removed during assembly. I am waiting for the detailed cockpit to arrive but the amazing electric retracts arrived with the model, just stunning piece of engineering.

Anyway I will be progressing over the next couple of weeks as the model is due to be displayed and flown at Jet Power 2012

RE: C&C Model M346 build and painting thread

Hi Phil,

Fantastic to see someone else with a 346 - I have one in the workshop ready to start in the next 4-6 weeks. I'm quite impressed with the quality of the construction and finish. I gave the electric retracts a miss as I was hesitant to go down that path just yet. Given the strip I fly from, I am also keen to use trailing link struts.

Could you please do me a favour and measure the length of the main and nose struts from shoulder to axle centre as well as the diam of the nose and main wheel? This would be a big help so I can make sure I get the right size when I order some pro-links.

Regards,
Garrett

I went with the red pre-painted version although I almost wish I had gone plain white as I have a sport scheme in mind that would have worked a treat on this airframe. Oh well...the red looks good in the sun.

I went with the Grey camo. Looks ok but no happy with the finish. Oh well. I have a P140rx bolted in mine. Light plane, so should be quiet good.

Theosoarus,

When do you expect to do the maidens? I'm trying to figure out what engine to go with and was undecided whether to go a 160/170 size motor or a 140rx.

Out of curiosity, what were you disappointed about with the finish?

Appears to be nice, compact electric brakes fitted.

Any feedback on their performance yet? - John.

RE: C&C Model M346 build and painting thread

Hi Garrett,

With mine the problem is the paint is very thin. And some areas they have sanded too much of the panel lines away. Plus the decals are poorly attached and there is no clear cote over them. So they are pilling off already. When I emailed CC models his reply was not what I expected from a reputable company. So yes should have ordered red or blue.

Maiden flight a few more weeks away at least. Still waiting for the cockpit and electric retracts to arrive. They have been sent.

I was planning on putting in a 180rx. But because of the delay in supply and the fact that the fuel tank is rather small i decided on the 140. But I have a 160sx sitting in another model that I could swap if I felt it needed more. But it's light and I feel the 140 will be plenty.

160 /170 sure why not. Always good to have more horses under the bonnet

I'm now playing with the way of how I will fit the rudder servo internally in the fuse and use the servo horn to drive the rudder underneath. If its too much trouble I'll just chuck it in as normal.

Cheers
Theo

RE: C&C Model M346 build and painting thread

Some good progress today after painting another model this morning and visiting Ali to get the final bits that I need to finish this build. Whilst I was with Ali we discussed the colour scheme, originally we were going to go with a scale but fictional scheme but now we have decided on . . . . . . . I am afraid you will have to wait till I have painted it to see which scheme we have decided on.

Anyway back to the build, I am not a lover of servos mounted onto the servo covers and having screws showing the are attaching the servo blocks, so today i made some servo mounts that will be hysoled to the top wing skin, the servos are still removable. That is something you have to think about when you building for clients, every servo has to be removable for maintenance. As you will see by the photos I had a nightmare with the elevator servos. The mount that is supplied with the model is not very good if you want to remove the tailplanes for storage and transportation. So I have come up with an easy solution to reverse the mount which is retain by four M3 screw into spike nuts. By mounting the servos in the reversed position the elevator linkage arm can both be in the vertical plain so a rigging retaining pin can be inserted vertically, you will see this later in the build. On the new servo mount you will see me pointing out a line this is the line of the pushrods and then pointing to the elevator arm. I am using the second hole on the JR heavy duty arms to give a good degree of torque. To remove the new servo tray you stick your arm up the jet pipe, am a big guy and I am able to do this with ease so it shouldn't be a problem. I have drawn up this modification and I anybody needs it please email me for the drawings.

Hey Fritz - good to see you got some trailing links fitted. Any chance you can send me the specifics on the retracts/struts/wheels you ended up going with and who you go them from so I can check them out? btw - have you flown yours yet?

Phil - what servos are you running all around? I saw the 8411s in the photo and was wondering if that's enough for the stabs. I'm thinking of trying some of the savox digitals on mine - the 30kg digitals (can't remember the model number) are very reasonably priced in my neck of the woods.

Hello Heer

I'm confused one photo with elevator servos outside the other inside. Which way did you end up?

Hi Phil, I am watching your thread really close , and now even closer because of your chosen paint scheme . you are one step ahead of me . since I herd this is going to be the next Israeli trainer jet replace the old a-4 , i want to do the same.
according to the pic you have is the same scheme i am doing now on my tam's jet a-4 . your pics looks like it is a full scale M346. i was waiting to see if this will be the como paint for this new trainer. the Hebrew letterer in black is the marking from the
A-4 AHIT . any way it looks stunning. good luck with you built . i got few other project before I get to this

Watching this one with interest, seriously considered one of these not so long ago, but info was a little bit hard to come by, look forward to seeing the build progress.

Graham,

It has great lines and should have a relatively low wing-loading. I got mine via Global Jet Club and was very happy with the service from my local dealer, Jeremy, as well as Cindy. I was kept up to date on the order process and it came in quicker than I had been promised.

RE: C&C Model M346 build and painting thread

Yesterday I had some great progress and a slight set back. I was able to fit the engine, fuel tank, battery tray, GBRJet CAT, jet pipe, utility panel and the main component tray.

As the u/c is scale but does not retract the correct way (should twist and turn on retraction) I decided to have the main door open outwards and the small door to open inboard and stay open whilst the gear is down, the real aircraft this door is attached to the leg it's self. With this in mind I decided to make the offset hinges myself as on the rear doors I wanted them to open more than 90 degrees.

I have one side complete, I will fit the other at the end of today so the hysol can dry over night and not hold me up during the day.

I should have her finish and ready for the paint prep tomorrow, I am looking forward to painting her in this new scheme. The paint decals and paint masks are coming from Taylormadedecals who I feel is one of the best decals producers, if you can use him and follow his process you will have a model that will look so scale.

Umm the set back, this was very unexpected, one of the main legs just stopped working, everytime I selected up or down all I could here was a click. As this model is so new and spares at the moment are not available we decided to dismanttle the unit and have a look to see what the problem is, straight away I found the problem when the gearbox was apart, one of the bearings had disintergrated, the flange had come apart and jammed the gear box, I cleaned the debris and made a tempory one out of aluminium until I can get some brass for a new one.
