RE: Making an Ultra Flash into an F-20UF

Hi Greg,

I always put the oil paint straight onto the paint without any clear coat, I put the clear on after the weathering and decals have been applied. The paint I use is either cellelous or acrylic basecoat.

The panel lines are made from vinyl sheet which is cut into 0.8mm wide strips, this is applied onto the model the a coat of primer applied, the primer is then rubbed back until the vinyl appears and then they vinyl is removed to give you a simulated panel line.

That is some serious nice work there!;)

Aw heck, my Flash looks like that and I didn't even have to work at it... LOL

Oh yea... I even added some deep scratches (read: nose wheel failure to extend) for more of an extra used effect:D:D:D

One question. Do you apply the oils directly over the paint or have you put a seal on first?

Thanks
Thanks for the reply Phil but I lied.....2 more questions.

Do you put the oils on neat or mixed with something?

and what liquid do you use to wipe off the unwanted?

I used oils on my P47 that you may have seen this year, but not sure I used it correctly?

Maybe see you Sunday at Baldock?

Gregg

RE: Making an Ultra Flash into an F-20UF

Hi Gregg,

Cheeky another two questions, ok, I put the oil paints on straight out of the tube when the temperature is below 21 degrees, over that I add a very small amount white spirit.

I wipe it off dry, nothing on the cloth, if I select an area that I don't want much weathering then I put a drop of white spirit on the cloth and remove the oil paint, you have to be careful if you put to much white spirit on the cloth it will remove all of the weathering, if that happens you will need to leave it at least 4 hours so the white spirit totally evaporates otherwise it will affect the oils paints and not give you the weathering results you will need.

I hope this is helpful, if its not raining to much on Sunday I will pop up in the afternoon and see you there Gregg.

BTW, love the T'bolt, looks really good mate.

Thanks once again for the reply and explanation. The P47 turned out OK but was not easy and I new I was not doing it right. You have just confirmed that!

I have a very yellow Bearcat nearing completion which needs details showing up so want to do it right this time.

Thank you!!

Yes I had seen that... hope he didn't want it kept a secret! :D

Looks great and a very different scheme. He must lose the spinner though!!

Hopefully I can learn from you when doing mine which will be in this scheme:

That's a cool scheme Gregg, if ever you need a hand feel free to pop up with a wing or fuse and I could show you first hand.

Nah, it's not a secret :)

Much appreciated Phil, hope to see you Sunday at your field.

It looks so much better with a couple of coats of flat clear applied.

Hi Phil

Thanks for all your threads and posts, I really learn a lot reading them. This is something I would like to try.
I just have one question.

Once you have done the weathering and decals what do you do as far as prep work before you shoot the clear.
ie. sanding, cleaning, etc

Regards
Neil

RE: Making an Ultra Flash into an F-20UF

Hi Neil,

During the process of painting, weathering and applying the decals I am very careful handling the model, once the decals are applied I give the model a blast with an airline to remove any dust, then a wipe with an anti static cloth, no liquids.

Once that is completed then the clear is applied.

I hope this is helpful.

Does anyone know if the artists oil paints would be compatible under an epoxy based cleaer? I use Klass Kote epoxy paints exclusively but would like to try this weathering method.

RE: Making an Ultra Flash into an F-20UF

As long as you leave the oil paint to harden for between 2 to 3 days you should be fine, but I would always do a test sample.

Whenever I am trying something new I always do a test sample to ensure that it has no reaction between the different paints.

One type of paint you have to be careful of is Humbrol emamals, the only way to get over a reaction with this type of paint is to give it a very light dust coat before a heavy coat is applied.
