This has come up on the giant scale forums and the response from someone that should know was that this is the car battery side, the hobby/tool stuff is a separate division.

That may be the case but the company as a whole files ch11. Sounds like they are seeking investors in which case pieces could be spun off and less profitable/money pit BU shut down. They make cells like the ones used in power tools as well as high power modules intended for cars and I think they had a starter battery going. 12v batteries of these chemistries are intriguing as replacements for the class of AGM/gel cell types.

Interesting as I see Johnson Controls bought them. Johnson was already in the electric vehicle battery business and was supplying packs and was a shareholder of another recent electric vehicle company bankruptcy - Azure Dynamics. I think with Johnson behind A123' we will see battery supply for some time to come.

Modellers must also be conscious of the fact that our consumption of batteries is less than 1 % of the market at best. Even if we are paying a "premium" there's no way a battery company could survive on r/c. Power tools and electronics are the really big consumers.
