Hi everyone, I'm building a new Jet trailer and wondering if anyone would like me to do a build tread on it.

I bought a new Chevy Express 2500 Extended wheel base van and was wondering the same thing. It's a tin can when any rock hits it, but we just put up siding and insulation which improved 100%. Planning on E Track's type stuff when we go further

I to just picked up my trailer last week. I'm looking to do a roller rack type setup. Set the planes on, strap down then roll into trailer and lock in place with some sort of floor locking system..

I see there are some guys on here from so cal I have been looking every where for a trailer. Can you point me the right way I am looking for a 5x8 with the barn doors and a side door used or not or a 6x10 in the same set up. If any body has a used one they would like to sell in the southern cal area please let me know that.. Sorry if I took your topic off topic. Thanks for your time

Have a buddy who did a roller rack (actually two racks) and it worked out pretty slick. Just don't forget to put the rear jacks down because the trailer is going to get tail heavy rather quick when you slide the rack out.

I've got a new jet on the way which won't fit on my existing sliding shelf so I'm going to a roller rack as well.
I saw a guy at a scale fly-in a few weeks ago with that setup & it works brilliantly. His was on wheels & he
removed the rack completely & wheeled it straight to the pits. - John.

No photo of that particular one but similar in concept to this Alasdair.
The wings were also supported on the slide out section.

What I saw was a metal frame which was the same dimensions as the inside of the trailer,
in this case it was about 7ft x 4ft wide & 4 ft high so quite large.

Attached to the rails running front to back were vertical bars and between these bars were
cross bars with pipe insulation on them to hold wings & fuselages.

At the front & rear of the frame were wheels on legs which telescoped down to support the frame
when it was slid out of the trailer. You could wheel the frame wherever you wanted.

The good thing was you could access it easily from every direction to secure models then slide it into
the trailer, no climbing into the trailer to tie things down. - John.

<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">Well just to give you a run down on my trailer I'm building.</span><div><font face="Arial" size="2">Total length will be 4.9m, width 2m, height 2m, box length 3570mm.</font></div><div></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The base section will be out of 40x40x1.6 with a draw bar of 75x50x3. </font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The frame section will be 20x20x1.6 and sheeted with 1.6 aluminum sheeting. All tubing will beroll galvanized.</font></div><div></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The inside will have 3 roll out mezzanine decks to hold my aircraft with storage space underneath. These will be made out of aluminum as I'm also set up to weld aluminum.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The trailer will be registered as a 1.4 tone so will have hydraulic brakes fitted.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">It will have a rear opening door and a side entry door.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">I will deck it out with 12v LED lighting and charging facilities. The on board battery will be charged with a 65w </font><font face="Arial" size="2">solar panel. </font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">I will also fit an aluminum box to the front of the trailer to hose other items.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The floor will be ply and covered with marine carpet.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The trailer will be fully insulated with twin circulation vents on top.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The trailer will be sprayed white.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">Will post some photos ofthe finished base section on the weekend as at the moment I have the whole thing on its side in the shed.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">The next part of the project would be to purchase and fit the axles, brakes and all the other little bits that bolt onto the base section.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">Any other information you would like me to share just ask.</font></div><div></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">Just a little tip for those that want to do some welding.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">Welding causes the work to heat up very hot to the extent that it warps.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">To minimize this its best to spot weld the whole frame first than continue with the rest of the welding. This helps with the bracing when welding.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">I like to weld all my tubing rite around not just partial weld like most manufacturers.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">I do this by welding the whole top side first then turning the whole frame around and continue with the rest of the welding on the opposite side.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">When you weld one side the work will warp a little to one side, but after you weld the opposite side it usually warps back and returns to normal.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">It usually only requires little to no additional heating to get the work 100% straight. I was able to do it with out any additional heat at all.</font></div><div><font face="Arial" size="2">All welding will be done with a MIG welder except for some of the aluminum which will be done with a AC/DC Tig. Cutting will be done with Grinder/drop saw and any plates which need to be cut will be done with the OXY/ acetylene torch until I run out of Oxy and then I will have to set up the Plasma. YesI like the old way of cutting with the Oxy torch as I'm yet to get used to the Plasma.</font></div>

Here are a few pic's of my trailer. It's a 6 x 12 and I can carry 4-5 jets and all the extras needed, ie; tents fuel, stands, tables and much more.

I remember Tam making some roller style ones but they will be to tall for my trailer.

I will need to make a 2 tear one as i have a 5 foot tall trailer..

I have just finished my new trailer. One of the things that I did was put a shelf on 5 foot ball glides that I can pull out of the back of the trailer. This way i can haul my giant scale planes on the bottom and jets on the top. Just after finishing it I took a 1,200 mile round trip to Jets over Kentucky and it wouked great!

m3baker, where did you get the 5' balls glides? I would love to do that to mine! I have three beds to keep jets, be slick to retrofit them into drawer types.

Everone feel free to discus all trailer builds on this tread. I'm happy to post my updates in between yours. At the end of the day this is what I enjoy about doing a build tread. If one person gets a good idea from the build tread than its all worth while for me.

I was going to ask this same thing, two of my jets have flat bottoms and this was my plan with my trailer. I will keep the 46% angry bird below it, I couldn't find the stuff before I moved.

I've posted this picture before, but I'll share it again... This baby is perfect for what you are looking for. Nice little clean one-owner, good little starter unit !!! Everything you need. Our buddy Add Clark put this together and he has since moved on to bigger and better. It might be for sale, give him a shout !!! :)

I got them on Amazon. Search 60" Full Extension Drawer Slide. Mine are 500lb capacity and sell for $255. They are really heavy duty and operate very smoothly.
I built a frame and welded the slides to the frame and then attached a 60" by 70" wide 1/2" finished ply sheet to the glides. My trailer is 7 ft wide so I actually had to rip two pieces of ply to get to the 70" width.
I took two pieces of 1X6 poplar laminated them together and mounted them on the sides of the trailer (actually bolted them through from the outside). Then I mounted the frame to the rails. The whole thing will come out in one unit by removing 6 carriage bolts. I wanted to be able to quickly remove the unit if I ever want to haul something big. The rails, of course, are permanently mounted, but they only come off of the walls two inches. I have two pins mounted on the end of each rail to secure the slides during transport.
If you want photos, I can take some when I get back in town this weekend.
Hope this helps - I really spent a lot of time thinking about it before I did this project. All my buddies say I overdid it, but most of them don't fly jets and don't know how much $$ we have riding back there, LOL.
