Super Falcon 63" Turbine
 
Hi I am going to get a 63" Super Falcon for my Wren 44 Gold the thrust is 4.5Kg I am happy with no vertical flying. I need to know how the turbine is fixed and also any recommendations for the retracts (I would prefer electric ) Anyone got one with a small turbine in?

Charlie, I had one a few years ago with a Wren 44 Gold in it. It flew very well and did not want for power. You will enjoy it.

Charlie,
I would recommend the Navy Cat over the Super Falcon. All the upgrades for turbine flying are already done and the airframe and gear package is hard to beat. Yong is very nice to work with as well if you ever need any thing.

Thanks to you both, I have actually ordered one, how is the turbine fixed on, looking at pictures it seems to be on an H type plate out of the fuse at the back?

I have the Tornado version (gift from a friend) but have not fitted an engine yet.

A friend flew the 63 inch Falcon with a 44 gold & the performance was very ordinary.
The engine spent a lot of time at high throttle settings just pushing the thing around.
However it WILL fly.

Whilst the 44 gold is a mighty little engine for it's size I think the Falcon needs more
engine than this. If I decide to finish my Tornado (too many projects) I'll be fitting
an '80' size engine in it.

Off to fly my Wren 44 (old manual start jobby) powered Bobcat 50 this morning.

The engine mount with the Tornado is a piece of folded aluminium which bolts to the platform at the back of the fuselage.

Supplied retracts are Spring Air Pneumatics with some steel trailing link legs. Whilst the retracts are superb I'm not sure
of the status of this company at present - website is being 'revised', are they still in business?

Hi All My Super falcon has arrived and looks good.

But no instructions and no engine mount.
Can anyone give me the Cof G position please.

Also a good photo of the engine mount would be great. I will have no problem making one other than what the design is so photo or diagram would be brilliant please, any other general photos would be brilliant too!!

Do hope someone can help, thanks Charlie

Hi Charlie, I made my own mount for the Wren 44 from 4 pieces of aluminium angle.
The advantage of this is you can adjust the thrust angle by rotating the top angles up
or down & drill some new holes to bolt it together again.

I think the mount on the Tornado would be too wide to line up with the holes in the
standard Wren 44 mounting straps.

Here's the set up instructions as well.

Here's a template that I developed. 6 degrees is the right amount of downthrust for an 80N class engine. You may need to modify it slightly to suit your engine. Mine was made out of .042" sheet aluminum and worked fine.

See post #9. I never used take off flaps, they're not necessary when taking off from pavement. The plane is a floater so you need as much landing flaps as you can get, at least 45 degrees. 1/8" elevator compensation is about right with full flaps.

Thanks Joe that is about what I thought. By the way did you have your turbine with any down thrust or level i have 4 degrees, but I have not flown it yet. My turbine is a Wren 44 Gold

You should be fine with that combination.

See post #10. I experimented with several different engines and levels of downthrust. I ended up with 6 degrees for my Wren Supersport (18# thrust). It had plenty of power and didn't climb at heavier throttle settings.

I did the maiden flight today, The Super Falcon flew really well and my Wren 44 Gold took it around a treat so I am well pleased.
Thanks for all your inputs, a real help.

I had a flame out, which is the first that I have ever had with a Wren engine. Landed okay I am am glad to say. I have a few thoughts so will look into the course. Due to the design of the model the fuel line is rather long, for only a 3 mm pipe and
there are other checks that I will do.

Good to hear, great work!

I don't think the length of the fuel line (on the pressure side) is an issue, some flyers were installing
extra fuel line on Jetcat P-20's to help reliability.

Are you using a header tank? On my small Bobcat 50 I rely on a felt clunk for fuel pick up & if I fly with
the nose down too much on approach the fuel sloshes to the front of the tank & it flames out.

A small header tank is on the 'to-do' list.

Thanks for your reply. I am using a header tank so no problem there. The flame out occurred after about three mins of flying when I reduce the throttle to tick over. After the flight I ran the turbine on my stand and simulated the sort of throttle movements that I had used in the flight and after the same sort of time I reduce the throttle to tick over and it flamed out just as before. There was still plenty of fuel in the tanks and no bubbles in the fuel line.
Any comments?

Check your deceleration delay. The default figure for my early 44 is 15 - 20. Mine is fine set at 11.
The first engines like mine were much fussier than the Gold.

Try it on the bench first, if the engine runs properly on the bench the problems in the plane.
