F 100 from "Mirce models" wooden kit

20 Attachment(s)
After a couple of wooden kits that went pretty well on the market, "Mirce models" introduced the new wooden kit - F 100 Super Sabre in 1/4,8 scale.

An interesting story is behind this F 100 Super Sabre project.
A few years ago my friend Damiano Orizio drew this model in the 3D program. Fuselage construction was from play parts, but the wings, the elevator and rudder were made of foam.
With such a model flew more than 750 times !!!

Last year, I got drawings from him, but I had with my friend, "3D wizard", Martin to draw again all the foam parts out of the wood, to be able to offer a wooden kit.
For the construction of the wing we used the design of another Damiano's & "Mirce models" proven model - the F 86 Saber. So, complete model was first drawn in 3D program and every ply part of model frame construction is laser cut in "Mirce models" workshop. .
In combination with 3D drawing, parts fit perfectly.

I start building this "Mirce models" F 100 Super Sabre with fuselage, which was made from two parts for easier transportation.

Important thing is to make 90 degree frame for ribs. All parts fits together like a "Puzzle", so you don't need any paper plan.
As you can see on pictures, I put together all the parts without glue. When I saw thar everything is OK, I glued it together.
I always use white or carpenter glue.

Front part:

Next time, rear fuselage part...

erbroens 06-16-2018 06:45 AM

Gorgeous! loved it.

What kind of retracts are needed here? Is there a canopy available?

ChrisPetersen 06-16-2018 01:11 PM

Looks great!

mirce 06-17-2018 02:30 PM

Thanks for first nice comments.

For this F 100 we recommended and on drawings are Behotec C 50 landing gear system.
Canopy is in the process of making, I sent all ribs and canopy frame to my friend who made clear canopy for all "Mirce models" wooden kits.
He promise me that I'll have canopies until middle of July.

Also, for this wooden kit will be available all other parts:
- wooden parts for inner wing construction, pylons and wings tanks
- Francesco will made cockpit with all details
- for elevator system I already made in machine workshop all parts for servo - elevator connection
- transparent canopy
- G 10 hinges and horns for control surface
- Detail set, Mirce Finish set, Extra rivets set
- all aluminum tubes for wing joiner, elevator, wing contra rotating axle...

As soon as I'll have this parts you will have information here, on my Web and Facebook pages.

Rear fuselage part was next on my worktable.

Since it has double parts, I first stuck them.

Very important is to have aluminum wing joiner during building rear fuselage section!!! Aluminum tube provides necessary alignment.

could this be modified to be de D version ?
Love the work and the quality of wood will probably have to get one.

mirce 06-18-2018 04:33 PM

Thanks Misha, this F 100 from wooden kit is D version.

My friend Luke told me that fin on rudder is to small. Martin and I check photos and, look, Luke was right.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...15ee6e10a2.jpg

Thanks for observation, will be change as soon as Martin come back from vacation...

dionysusbacchus 06-18-2018 05:26 PM

You change it and I'll buy one, just have to see how easy it is to move the nose gear back to the scale location, then it should look great! Thanks!

mirce 06-19-2018 12:35 AM

Luke, the fin will be change for sure, just need to wait few days until Martin come back from vacation.
I know how a mistake was made, Martin scanned the rudder, but during drawing of 3D drawings, he accidentally drew the moving part smaller for space between the two upper fin rib.
This can be easily corrected...
Making a model is a process, I show all this as one story and as you see, there are no secrets. Errors are happening, and often just thanks to modelers around the world, they are spotted and removed.

Luke, I'll be very happy if you decide to buy F 100, that will be one more great workmanship, good for both of us. I'll have fantastic advertise, because you are master builder and you will have super model.

OK, back to workbench...

Great work! Finally a jet worthy to build!

mirce 06-21-2018 01:39 AM

Front and rear fuselage parts together...

Now you know why the hole on the lower ledge is expanding - for the better alignment it enters the first rib from the back of the hull.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...b87ff861af.jpg

Three bolts and four pins secure connection. I add few more round hardwood ply rings

When I added other parts, the F 100 began to get a recognizable shape.
This is one huge model...

Great work, looking better every day. My mistake on the D version. Could this be modified to be the F version ?

kevinthoele 06-21-2018 07:39 PM

Looks awesome!!!! Retirement is soon for me and this would make a great project

mirce 06-24-2018 03:55 AM

OK, now a little pause with fuselage, it's time for F 100 wing.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...a73887681c.jpgLooking at the drawing and a bunch of wings parts, I was thinking of where to start?

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...937954cac8.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...3296cba47b.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...c63b6d8d36.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...af1f140bfa.jpg

The first step in making the wing was to go and buy a new OSB wooden board (2500 x 1250 mm), because all I have in the workshop are too narrow for this wing.

To fit everything, I first made the template and sorted all the parts without glue.
I kept in mind that the aluminum tube (wing joiner) must be at an angle of ninety degrees in relation to the first rib to the fuselage and that the leading edge must be absolutely flat.
Then, along the other edges of the wing ribs guide plates, I slid the wooden battens, so nothing could be moved anymore.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...cc20233c0c.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...3185aec1bc.jpg

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...e8cc11ef25.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...fbcdf934ee.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...813d7136d5.jpg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...e6d838865a.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...5e832268fa.jpgNow was easy, first I glued the transverse parts that connect all the wing ribs, but I did not adhere two parts that are immediately next to the aluminum tube.
Aluminum tube was in the wing during this process!!!!!
This is very important for good alignment!!!!

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...8a3ccc3703.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...be45d72965.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...48717c0f3f.jpg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...0d45dd1b52.jpg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...3cb461a584.jpg

When the adhesive was dried, the wing was very rigid, I removed the tube and glued the two remaining cross sections. While the adhesive did not dry, I checked how the tube to enter through the all ribs holes and when I was convinced that everything was OK, I take it out and left to dry the adhesive on wing wooden parts. In the end, I glued the trailing and later leading edges.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...c331ded723.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...307c47f7d6.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...cb19494679.jpg

For all gluing I used a white (carpentry) adhesive.

Looks like you are having great fun with that puzzle. Very nice kit, I mist say.

I'm really interested on how you are going to sheet the fuselage. That is the skill that just escapes me and my patience.

Looks great! Keep the build going, please.

Jeremy300 06-24-2018 11:46 AM

Is there any way you can scale this down to about 70%? I like building with wood but this is just too big.

mirce 06-24-2018 03:29 PM

Thank you Chuck, sheeting fuselage is not so complicated, you will see.

Jeremy, unfortunately, for now no smaller scale.

DARN!
Not all of us can deal with large models :(

Kevin_W 06-25-2018 11:43 AM

Will this model have full inlet ducting, or just partial?

RC_MAN 06-25-2018 06:04 PM

Who will supply the trust tube?

+1

Even though there's thought of transporting in mind a smaller model would be golden !!!

It looks like the inlet is split just in front of the nose retract, you can see that the duct can be made out of 1/64" ply rolled, with one flat side, so yes it looks to me like full ducting.

Who will supply the trust tube?
I buy my thrust tubes from here, made to your specifications: Jettech USA
