ORIGINAL: Ulrich Thiel I have made a mistake as I roll the end to the dia 64 mm. There is a bevel from the tool that I use. The turbine is pumping with this cone. I think there is delamination of the airflow at this edge. I don't know the exact reason for that, but it's defenatly from this cone. Another one works perfect. your cone modified;) ;););) |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Hi Gerald,
dont panic. The 14.5 mm shaft works. The critical resonace rpm is also depending on the kind of material you use. It is calculated an we are on the safe site! @ chrigui I hope it works now. Let me know! Regards Uli |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Hi Gerald, you can e-mail JetBeetle for a critical rpm calculator: http://jetbeetle.com/
I don't have it my self, but Horace presented some numbers on the homebuildturbines Yahoo group, and they looked very sensible. Lars |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Thanks Uli, that makes sence.
Hi Lars, thanks, will try this for my new engine, just to be sure. Rgds, Gerald |

Here is what I have so far.
There are two types of chambers, spares for my TJT3000 and JG100, and the Kittelberger/UT type. The other picture is my newborn spot welder. The long arms are for welding thrust tubes. I will make shorter ones for cc work. I have all the engines I need for flying, so no hurry here, but I have always wanted to make an engine mostly from scratch. What I fear most is the shaft, and how to get the precision needed. Lars |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Hey, what's that in the spotwelder's background, is that a Saab tunan? Is it a kit or did you made yourself? Nice model!
|
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Well spotted Gerald! You win nothing:-)
2/3 of the fuse is from the old Nauwa molds, the rest is from scratch. Scale is 1/6. Some day I hope to make a new plug and molds, that is more precise to scale, and have better quality. Test flight should have been this summer, but circumstances have made progress very slow. Lars |

Just wanted to say Hi to all, my name is David, from the US, and wanted to share some of my pics for the UT160 buildup. Thanks Gerald for the info and pics you gave me for the JG100 when I was researching it. I still want to build one of those also.
Thanks Uli for the tech support :) and Your package is on the way....... David |

RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Thank You Christian :) Your work is great. I wish I was blessed enough to have equipment like yours. My stuff is real time consuming with a 2 axis CNC Bridgeport and an 1940's atlas lathe. Time for me to step up from the stone age....LOL
On your site there is an F-101 Voodoo. Who is that and do you know if he would be willing to sell copies of his prints, or if he sells fuselages. Next to the jet I am building, 1/7 F-14, that is my second favorite and would absolutely love to have one of my own..... David |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
the F-101 is a scratch build by my friend....
the fuselage is one piece with a part of wings... I meet my friend saturday and i ask if it's possible to send you the fuselage regard's Christian www.webalice.it/jetflydemoteam |

Gerald,
[X(] Is that a Sieg X1 mill? That's quite good work you're doing with such a small mill. Did you turn the diffuser on a Sieg lathe too? |

Wow Gerald, nice home shop. I hope you didn't take offense to the "stone age" comment I made. I apologize if you did. Great craftmanship on your parts. :) I totally agree with you, why buy when you have the skills to make it yourself...

RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
@ Uli, I'm considering in making the UT160 as well and when I do I need it for a realy big plane so all power is required.... I just saw your site and read it all through, very interesting. Question, you mention this engine is capable of producing 14-18kg of thrust, depending on design. Well, I'm gona need it all, what do you mean by "depending on design"? Is that about accuracy of building or is there another trik?
Many thanks, Gerald Wow Gerald, nice home shop. I hope you didn't take offense to the "stone age" comment I made. I apologize if you did. Great craftmanship on your parts. I totally agree with you, why buy when you have the skills to make it yourself... |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Good question Gerald. Maybe it's like the JG, 14kg possible, but not for a long time:-)
I have decided on the UT 160 myself, as the KKK 2209 compressor for Alfred Kittelbergers design seem to be hard to get. Two Garret wheels are on their way in my direction. Lars |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Hi Gerald,
no, there is no trik. Performance data of the later turbine depend in strong measures on the accuracy of the manufactured parts and the assembly. So for example gap dimensions are an indication for the efficiency of the engine. Uli |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Tnx Uli, so that means that 18kg is possible?
Rgds, Gerald |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Hi Gerald,
Yes, but take a look at my homepage, please. You can find the data of my own turbine here: http://www.ut160.de.tl/Leistungsdiagramm.htm Regards Uli |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
That looks really promising Uli! Did you actually obtained this 17.9kg on the bench or is it calculated data?
(I also notice this dip above 120k rpm, inefficienty?) Thanks, Gerald http://img.webme.com/pic/u/ut160/leistungsdaten.jpg |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Gerald
Graphing data like this should really be done as an XY graph with the line option. It can be a bit tricky to know how this is done unless you use graphing in Excel frequently. If you look at the X axis you will see that the data points are mostly spaced at 10,000 rpm intervals. If you plot the data as an XY graph the datapoints will be displayed at the points they were measured and the X axis display will be evenly spaced. I recharted the data and it is fine except the 75,000 point should be 70,000. I agree this is a very good result. John |
RE: UT-160 turbine? Feedback please?
Hi Gerald,
I obtained the data on a bench. I measure the thrust and temperature at every point you can see on the x axis. The result ist the excel sheet. (I'm not a specialist for excel ! [:o]) Regards Uli |
