The Pilot's Fei Bao SU-27 Build *** Flight *** Report
 

I brought home the SU-27 from FIJR two weeks ago and have been building since. I promised Wagner I would share information as I went.

Keep in mind, this is a prototype and FB has been responsive to suggested changes in the past, so the production kits will probably be a bit different.

Overall, my impressions are favorable. The kit components totalled only 25 pounds out of the box. By my calculations and allowing for some nose weight, the plane will be right at 40 pounds when completed. I am planning to install two Rabbits, which will provide a 1 to 1 thrust to weight ratio dry. The plane was very simple to build. I worked a few hours here and there, and in just over two weeks, I will have the plane up to the point of engine installation.

I started with the air systems, which were mounted in the nose. Plenty of room. The little blue unit is a sequencer that will soon be offered by Jet Central as the exclusive US distributor ... it has three completely programmable channels, air and voltage system failsafes, and switches that operate lights in conjunction with gear position. Nifty little unit.

The nose strut is a piece of art. There is plenty of room to access the gear. I did replace the wood screws with bolts and blind nuts.

The intakes pop off with two bolts providing excellent access to the gear and engines. The intake tubes are already integrated with the fuselage sections. I did reinforce the seam with thin glass cloth and CA.

The pipe is excellent quality. I opted to skip the bypass, and Carlos of RTI has provided a couple of nice bellmouths for the pipes.

Plenty of room and access for mounting the Rabbits.

The fuel capacity on the prototype was limited ... this is one of two tanks of about 1.8 L or 60 ounces of capacity. I am working with Jet Tech to add another 25 to 30 ounces a side.

The Fei Bao SU_27 looks like a great plane with typical fei Bao quality. Nice to hear they will listen to suggestions from an early builder.

Here are a few pictures of the initial servo installs. I like the integrated nose steering ... very easy to install and set up.

The elevator servos dropped into their mounts with no fitting needed. The horizontal stabs slide into the pre installed bearing boxes and have a slot at the end to make sure they don't slip. I cinched down the bearing bolts and then pinned the stab spar for an extra measure of safety. The linkage is short and rigid, not much slop in the install. You can see I used an SWB servo arm on the High Torque Airtronics servo.

I am at relatives for a few days, but will have the rudders and the wings done by Sunday and will post pictures of these and the assembled kit by the end of the weekend.

What thrust turbine will you use on the SU 27?... Or what brand?

Sorrry now I see you will use two Rabbits... Is there any possibility to use one turbine with bifurcated pipe?...

No possibility. The intakes are very far apart and the fuselage cross section in the middle is very thin. This is probably why you don't see a large number of SU-27 kits on the market today.

Hi Keith,
Nice work and great plane! Now that you are working with it, what about a possible one engine installation in one nacelle? Who big is the engine bay area to fit a big block?

Finished up most of the construction this weekend. These pictures show the drop in installation of the 3301 rudder servo and the control linkage.

The Flaperon 8611a servo fits into a ply wing rib. No hatch in the wing ... just cut a slot. Very quick install.

A better shot of the nose gear ... also the aft end of the aircraft with the nicely painted tail cones and rear fuse extension in place. It was raining out yesterday so I couldn't get a shot of the entire aircraft, but it is now completed, waiting on engines and extra fuel system components.

This was one of the easier builds I have done. While I am waiting for the engines, I am going to do some prelimiary weight and balance calculations and do a reestimate of the total weight.

Cost at the time was around 170 shipped, but that might have dropped by now. I ordered three about the time that the exchange rate was the worst.

Desert Aircraft used to carry the black units and you might see if they have any in stock. I was looking for colors, so I ordered direct from Germany. I tried to order from HKM at one point but he was unreliable.
