RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Guys, when i am going to build a other big hawk i have a easy solution (. I think http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif). For the problems with blowing open the geardoors.
just build a balsa wooden box around the gear / wheel in the fusalage. easy and a small job. I think that you have les more presure on the doors. when you block the inlet you can have problems with the sucktion of big engines ( p 200 / Olympus ) we had that overhere in Holland with a big viperjet. the fusalage implodes. i hope you understand what i mean because me englisch is not zo goodhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ssed_smile.gif Rg Maikel <br type="_moz" /> |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Maikel,
That is something I had thought about too. It would also provide more places to mount equipment ;) Rgds, Mark |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Maybe also a good idea to make a plug of it, and make them from carbon/gfk.
I think a lot of people want to buy ithttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif |

I thought of wheel well before. Problem is I use this area for access. I use this area to place batteries and to install the wing retaining bolts. Im sure it could be done though. my wheels touch the inlets when retracted. they would likely need to be cut back to give clearance.
I dont think you will ever have problem of fuselage imploding. There are tons of holes on the Hawk. The gear doors are open for takeoff and when in forward flight, enough air is being rammed into the intakes. Just baffle enough to reduce the inside air pressure. 24-25psi is really high! Scott |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
I'm half done fabricating wheel wells. Best solution IMO. Thanks Scott for the insight mate - much appreciated.

Im sure yours will look amazing Tobba!
Also another point of interest is the ABS plastic strut covers! I have had problems here as well on both of my Hawks. If these were made out of glass, they would be much better/stronger. I think this time I will try to glass the inside and then fill with Gorilla glue once installed. I would prefer an all aluminum strut! That would be very nice!! Scott |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Guys
My hawk isn't finished yet.. but if use a strong servo and setup de servo horn to stay straight up when close, this isn't enough to hold the door closed? |

ORIGINAL: heraldoboldrin Guys My hawk isn't finished yet.. but if use a strong servo and setup de servo horn to stay straight up when close, this isn't enough to hold the door closed? eventually the door will get ripped off. My lasted for one year till the door ripped off hinges. If you just fly slow then it may never fail. It would be best to fix the problem. Problem being too much air coming into the fuse. Just block some of the air coming in inlets. easy to fix. Scott |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Hi
I measured my car today. Have to split it up[:o] Could you guys that have to split it, post pics or procedure on how you do it, please? Thanks Nuno |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Scott now you are starting to get me worried...doors, plastic strut covers:(. I would think when a kit cost this much that they would have all issues worked out.

Please dont misunderstand me. I have found a few little issues that are easy to correct. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. Its the best Hawk there is bar none!! I own two of them!!
4 Tomahawks went to Top Gun and all 4 won trophys. I took 2 Hawks there and won 3rd in Unlimited and 5th in Expert. Joey won 1st in Pro-am and Barry won 4th in Sportsman. So is that a testament of a Tomahawk Hawk? I had a 94.4 static score with one and a 93.3 with the other. The inlets let a little too much air in the fuse. blocking some off takes a whole 30 minutes. very easy to do. The abs strut covers can be glassed very easily or just filled with gorilla glue when built and be fine. easy stuff to do. just letting you guys know so that you can do it right the first time. I try to let everyone know so they can get it right. Im not saying dont buy a Tomahawk Hawk because of a plastic strut cover. Letting you know what can happen and how to fix it. I am running a P200 in mine and it runs perfect with 70% of the inlet blocked off. This problem probably never arises on the P160-P180 installations. The inlets dump right into the main door area which is probably why this happens. On the Tomahawk L39 the inlets come all the way past the main doors and to front of turbine. Also there is nowhere for the air to escape in the hawk the tailpipe makes a pretty good seal on back end. Scott |
RE: Tomahawk-Design Bae Hawk 1: 3.5
Thanks Scott. I do appreciate the heads that you provided to all of us on the struts and doors. I am definitely about to order either the Hawk or the L-39. I just hope I can get a good builder to take on the project. I have some pricing with Tomahawk doing most of the build but I will still check things out here in the US.
I was planning on using a p180rx. Is that enough or should I go with a 200? |
