Government (temporarily) shuts down model flying in Atlanta

Wow, this is a first that I have heard of. The FAA has issued a NOTAM/TFR (Notice to Airman/Temporary Flight Restiction) for the Atlanta area on Monday from 10:15am to 3:00pm. Its being disseminated by the AMA to clubs in the area. Here's part of the AMA email:

A new FDC NOTAM/TFR has been issued for the greater Atlanta, GA metro area for Monday, 8/2, from 10:15a until 3:00p EDT. The TFR is issued for security purposes to cover VIP movement in this area. Model aircraft operations are prohibited in this area during the specific times of the TFR.

Here's the actual NOTAM:

http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_0_5041.html

This is the section including model aircraft:

C. The following operations are not authorized within this TFR: flight training, practice instrument approaches, aerobatic flight, glider operations, parachute operations, ultralight, hang gliding, balloon operations, agriculture/crop dusting, animal population control flight operations, banner towing operations, sightseeing operations, maintenance test flights, model aircraft operations, model rocketry, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

Has this happened elsewhere in the U.S.? What if I fly my foamy in the back yard?

Craig

IIRC, I got a similar notification from the AMA not that long ago, for a restriction in the SF Bay Area - also for VIP travel.

We've got them down in south Florida before.

Interesting and shocking, if it is a fact, as I think that someone has oversteped their authority. Just like attempting to get a GA aircraft into National... I need to do some more checking to see if it does come up in other discussion areas.

I would say to fly your foamy, just don't turn your transponder on! :D:D

obamas coming to town... Had 3 or 4 of them last year, everytime Obama came to town. Nothing you can do about it.

I am sure someone will offer to fly your jets while your "away" for awhile if you do.

Seems a bit of an over reactive title. Field gets shut down - for a few hours;)

Not a big deal or shocking. They've been a few of them in NY/NJ recently......

AMA working with the FAA is probably helpful to the hobby in the long term.

I'v seen this several times in the last few years or so. A lot in the last 19 month's. I have always wondered what would happen if you did fly. Would a bunch of big unmarked black vans come in sideways and on two wheels at your field out in nowhere??? Just wondering.

We get them here by us once in a while.

Same thing happened in Nashville at Peeler Park when G. Bush flew in. Park Patrol and Metro Police were at the field and informed us that no flying was allowed. So this is not just happening because of Obama. Just a minor inconvenience. At least we are not talking about a permanent prohibition to RC flying. [8D]

The most important is obvious, you would be risking inciting more attention and higher regulations towards model aviation. The feds don't have a sense of humor when it comes to this stuff.

ooooH understand I wouldn't do it. I was just wondering if it would even be knowticed! Model aviation is indeed a foamy or a CX3 non the lease.

Totally routine, happens all the time, http://www.modelaircraft.org/members...amarchive.aspxcurrent NOTAMS are listed on the AMAsite. http://www.modelaircraft.org/members...bs/notams.aspx

Iagree that the title to this thread is a little extreme http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif

We had them when G. Bush flew from Waco to his ranch in Crawford by heli. They flew over the Waco model field with F15's escort. Only lasted a couple of hours and we were good to go. What we don't need is some loose cannon mouthing off to the FAA. WE will lose every time.

The AMA is trying to get us exempt or at least ease the restrictions on us. We definitely do not want to get on the wrong side of the FAA on this no matter how wrong and overly intrusive our government has become.

TFR's for VIP movement are for real and no Please follow them, or we will all lose.

Edited by the mod to remove abbreviated/substitute profanity.

No big deal and nothing new, happened here a few times over the last few years. AMA sends you an email if you're in the affected area.

Michigan Jets was delayed in starting a few years ago because GW came to Detroit that morning.

This appears to be more common than you might think.

South Florida has had the no fly several times including the super bowl last year and a political convention of some sort.

We have had it a couple of times in Oz as well, Commonwealth Heads of Governments & the Pope too if I remember rightly.

I wonder if all this came from a reported incident a few years back of the authorities investigating an explosion in the middle east & discovered the remains of a couple of newby bomb makers along with the remains of a model plane?

Perhaps they put 2 & 2 together? John.

Yeah...

Looks like Fox News wrote the title to this thread  Consider the NOTAMS a minor inconvenience if not a favor. Can you imagine what would happen to our hobby if some hayseed flew his jet across the path of Air Force One or one of its escorts (let alone running it into one of those aircraft)? We'd all be done. In addition to the selfish desire to keep my hobby as restriction-free as possible, I'd also like to see the First Family be as safe as possible, whenever and where ever they travel.....regardless of who's in the White House.
