Replacing Spur Gear on T-MAXX
Hi Guys,
I have the new T-MAXX with the 2.5 engine. I gave my brother the radio and was teaching him to drive. Told him to brake, he gave full throttle instead, hit the curb head on. It was not bad as he was about 5 feet from the curb, however the stock spur gear was stripped. I bought the aluminum type to replace the stock. From my observation, it seems as though I have to lift the transmission to do this. Is there anything else I should do as I have the tranny out. Extra lube, tips and tricks, do's and dont's etc?
Thanks,
Striker.

To replace the spur gear all you have to do is remove the engine and gas tank. It is very simple to remove the old and pop in a new one. You can also clean up your engine and the chassis below to help keep your engine running cool.

Thanks T-MAXX_CA
I was looking at engine/tank removal too, but thought that tranny removal was easier. I will take your advice.

It is easier to remove the trans!
But, over time the tranny's screw holes will ware out but, there is an easy fix for that! You don't have to take the engine off but, it's good idea to loosen it to make adjustments to the fit of the new spur gear!

Replacing Spur Gear on T-MAXX
Hi Legendary,
Thanks for the input. I did remove the engine and I was happy I did as I discovered that one ear of the engine mount was broken. I just went to my friends hobby shop, bought a new mount, spur gear slipper/pegs. I am installing the 12 pegs now on the new Robinson Racing Spur Gear and they are not going right through the hole. They seem to stop flush at the other end. I am almost sure that the have to be evenly placed in the hole with equal width on both sides of the gear. Is this correct?
On our planes we also put a drop or two of thin CA to keep threads intact. Does this apply for the type of plastic the tranny mounting holes has as well?

When you tighten the nut it will even them out!
CA will not hold up to the abuse and vibration that these trucks take. You will be taking the trans off from time to time and some day it will strip out but, you can drill through and put a locknut on 3 of the 6 holes and that works fine. 4 of the hole (if drilled) would go into the tranny case! Not to worry I have got one tranny case that is still going strong without having to do anything for over a year now but, it can happen then next time I take it apart!

The tradeoff, is that you will never go through another spur, thats for sure....I use the Robinson Double Slipper spur set (72T), and love it....but man, you really gotta be a good driver. If you start doing big jumps though.....you will be buying those $8.00 motor mounts like you wouldn't believe!

Gear mesh is one big reason that a plastic spur gear will fail. I have had my plastic one on now for about a gallon, and have yet needed to replace it. Gear mesh and chassis flex are the two biggest killers of spur gears.....
