my duratrax warhead brushless conversion(video)
Ive been contemplating converting my warhead to brushless and a few weeks ago my pull-start broke so I though its a good time to do it.lol
after researching various motors and esc I ended up ordering a hobbyking 120a 1/8-1/5 esc and a tyrnigy 2650kv motor and 4000mah 4s lipo.I was going to make my own motor mount but I got a great deal on a hpi savage flux motor mount set.one problem is the hpi flux motor can is 39mm and the turnigy is 42mm so I had to mill out the clamps a little.well I finished it up today and thouhgt Id give it a test run,OMG this thing flys, wheelies at any throttle position, want to flip over, even fullspeed it pulls the wheels.did a few top speed runs, seem to be about 45 or so on the 15 tooth mod1 pinion,I want to tame it down with a 17-19 tooth pinion, and when I get my tuning card for the esc,Ill tune it down there too.ran great no problems, motor and esc ran very cool and I got about 20 mins or so charge and that was with some top speed runs too. with a higher pinion I think 50-55mph would be no problem.

I sent back the 120 esc and ordered a hobbywing 150a esc(read good things about them)my guess is even though the hobbyking 120a was rated for a 4s lipo maybe it was a little more that it could handle.cant wait to get it up and running it is such a beast!!!and I thought an 4s wasent going to be enough.lol

put the new esc in set it up etc, very impressed with it.very smooth, and def has more power than with the hobbyking 120.
motor stayed very cool, and everything is working great!!
Im going to take a video of it,its a wheelie machine, almost too much.lol I need to make a wheelie bar for it so I can go full throttle.
even at like 3/4 throttle when I go full it will wheelie.and it seems like the top speed will be well over 50mph.

so far about 5 packs through it,running great.hobbywing esc is great so far.
one little problem,my slipper clutch slips a little and backs the nut off.Im going to replace the pads and see if that takes care of it.

what I did was I used a set of savage slipper pads, almost exactly the same but better material, and a slight bit thicker.
also got a new lock nut for it and did use a little locktite on it.
right now seems to be holding up great.

Looking forward to them. You almost have inspired me enough to pull mine out after years of doing nothing with it [img][/img]

its a shame too because the chassis and suspension is really good, but the .27 was terrible...

yes, the ST 27 is a turd but the rest of the truck is sweet. You are killing me ............... just pulled the truck out this morning and started cleaning it up. Either it's going brushless or will pick up a cheap .28 mill.
Your video's might be the determining factor lol.

in the video I cant really go full throttle or it will flip over.Im going to fab up a wheelie bar and go up a few teeth on the pinion.
also my street is not long enough to slowly roll into it.

truck has maybe 20 tanks of fuel run through it. Bought it on clearance for 150.00 at a local hobbytown several years ago. Always wanted one and at that price could not resist. Anyway never could get the motor to hold a tune and finally just moved onto something else.
Look forward to seeing your truck kicking up some dirt

Not to hi-jack your thread but I woke up this morning in a good mood and thought why not go ahead and give the ol warhead one more chance . So pulled the .27 apart and made sure nothing was rusted or bent etc. Suprisingly this motor still has a good amount of compression so being the fool I am charged up the ignitor, rx pack and installed a new glow plug. Filled her up with 20% odonnel and started going through the process..... Well sometime later finally came to the conclusion it was hopeless lol.
Wasted a good part of a nice Sunday messing with this motor and can promise that it will never happen again .
Second gear still work in your truck after the conversion ? Curious how that has worked out.

yup still shifts into second great just like with the nitro motor.you can play with the shift point to match you gearing and or brushless setup.
