Default Nitro fuel: How harmful is it to your health?

I am looooooooooooooooving my R/C big time. I am also tweaking, tuning, and just wondering if nitro fuel is bad for your health.

I sometimes wear latex gloves because nitro gives me allergic reactions like itchy eyes or runny nose.

Do you guys worry about it or is nitro fule okay as long as it isn't drank or spread all over your body.

Truth be told, automobile fuel seems more nocuous because of its strong smell. Nitro fule, however, is very low on the odor level but that doesn't meet its harmless.

look up MSDS for it. Yes, it is hazardous, no 99% of the people that use it arent familiar with MSDS's

Here is a MSDS for Nitromethane
http://www.mallchem.com/msds/englishhtml/N5740.htm

For those that do not know, MSDS is:
Material
Saftey
Data
Sheet

It lists the general chemical composition of a material, its hazzards, precautions that need to be taken while handling, any short/long term effects, and medical treatment for accidental over exposure

phychorevo, I would think there are people out there that would be allergic to a methanol/nitomethane/castor/synthetic oil mix right out of the jug. Everybody feels it if they run the engine in a closed area, both from the superheated raw unburned fuel out the pipe and the carbon monoxide off a fuel based engine. Remember that on a windless day you can simulate these conditions in an open area.

Also beware of the designer smells that can be added to the fuel like cherry, coconut, etc. They in no way make it any less dangerous, just easier on the nose.

I have no problems with incedental contact with the fuel, but I don't plan on using it in a bubble bath or shampoo. Don't care for the taste of it either, based on an accidental drop or two. Have no plans to use fuels bottles as cigarette butt containers, etc. As with most things it does require use of a little comman sense.

I prefer Top fuel myself. But yeah watch out for those fumes. I've been hurting before form when they hit your eyes and noise.

by making these statements, you are indicating that chemicals arent dangerous?? And if you are running on a windless day outdoors, there is NO WAY you can duplicate the fume concentration and degraded air quality you will have as if you were running indoors. We can go on all day about air concentrations, pure air, and limits in ppm that rendor air safe to breath.

As for contact with the skin... The skin is like a sponge, even though you wipe it off immediatley upon contact, your skin will STILL soak up the chemicals contained in the fuel. This will enter the blood stream, and guess what, it IS poisoning you! Like oit oyr not, chemicals should never be down -played in ANY way. Each has their own specific risks and direct contact (skin, mouth, eyes, nose) should NEVER be made intentionally!

This has NOTHING to do with allergies, rather the pure dangers of any kind of chemicals alone, or blends. I can go on all day with what is wrong with that post. I DO work in the chemical industry, and I am constantly around chemicals FAR worse than a Nitromethane blend BUT I dont let my guard down and Ill NEVER purposley over expose myself to those dangers. You may show no ill effects today, tomorrow, even next week. Its the cumalitive dammage you are doing to your immune system, and internal organs that are suffering because of ones lack of care or knowledge.

There is nothing better for washing down a big grease sandwich than a nice cold bottle of 30% nitro fuel......

So Ken, you are saying that if you are outside on a very still day its OK to stick your nose up the stinger and breath away because it will cause you no harm. Thats what I can get from reading your message. Maybe you should try re-reading mine.

And you are right, allergic would not be the exact correct term for what is happening.

Ken448,
Your knowledge, information, and expertise in this area is greatly appreciated and invaluable. I appreciate your input, help, and feedback.

To reiterate what you're saying in a nutshell: Just be careful and take precautions when dealing with chemicals. Thanks a lot.

In surfboard repair and shaping, fiberglass is another chemical that should be handled with care.

Ken, my point is we were both giving out warnings. Sorry if you did not take mine as such.

And if you are running on a windless day outdoors, there is NO WAY you can duplicate the fume concentration and degraded air quality you will have as if you were running indoors.
I also think from your reply that you have never pitted for someone at the start of a race when you have 10 nitro engines warming up, outside, and the only thing creating a breeze is the fumes from the stingers and spinning tires. I have seen many people leave the area choking and crying. That to me indicates that the concentration level is high enuff to be harmful yet from your message I get the feeling that anything outside is OK.

huh, they say graphite in pencils are poisenes and cause cancer. nearly everything "causes cancer", by the way they are talking about pure nitro methane we are talking about 20%-30%. not 100% if it causes cancer than uh ohh because im around protrolium distillates, grease,cuso4 (batt acid), lead, copper, graphite, silicone. all day every day.

the fumes are the most dangerous of all, at first i was around my nitro evader (still am) the bunt fumes gave me a head ache dry nose and more, but now im immune to its abilitys to irritate!! no gas is going to make me uncomfortable!

Well shupid, if you drink enough water quickly it will kill you. Most people have enough common sense to not do it. Nitro fuels are dangerous, but using a little common sense in their use will go a long way to prevent problems, both acute and chronic.

lstRacerX, that wasn't you right behind me when I left Taco Hell the other night was it?

Lets put this into perspective shall we;

There are many other chemicals in fuel than NitroMethane, some more dangerous, some less dangerous.

Petrol will make you temp. blind if you get in in you eye, nitro wont. Wash it with water and there shouldnt be a problem.

If you drink too much then it will kill you, fact, but a small ammount wont. Your average oven cleaner is much worse for you than nitro fuel.

The fumes are more dangerous than the fuel cos they get streight to the lungs and cause tissue damage, they are also narcotics and very dangerous.

wow.. the laid back nature of some of the attitudes towards hazardous chemicals amazes me. Im done with this thread.

If the fumes are that bad at the starting gate, then BUY A RESPERATOR! You ARE harming yourself if you ingest these fumes PERIOD! Your body is complaining for a reason (coughing, sneezing.. eyes watering etc.)

yep, fumes are dangerous, this stuff is dangerous, but that is a risk we need to make, you dont get any where dodging chemicals, shampoo has poisenous chemicals in it that actually activate under steam. that windex you use cancer, air freshiner cancer, paint cancer, light bulbs cancer, wires cancer, carpeting cancer, gas cancer, even the computer you look upon, the radio waves and the emmishion causes cancer. no matter what you do there is a risk of damage and cancer, unless you are careless there is a low chance of cancer.

life isn't worth living if there is no risk... it is the fruit of life.

theres lots of serously harmful stuff we dont even realize where around generally i bet there lots of you who like "new car smell" guess what its toxic/carsenogenic(canser causing). The chemicals in swiffer wet jet there one molecule away from being POISONOUS ANTI-FREZZ you know like the stuff in your cars radiator it causes sevear irversible liver damage over time. No matter what says "MAY CAUSE CANSER" on it dosent mean its actually casrsenogenic companies just try to cover there asses but more often than not they can cause canser so PAY ATTENTION TO LABLES they have those "funny looking symbols" for a reason!!!!!!!
