Metal will help a bit but more important than that is proper gear mesh. The old rule of thumb is to put a piece of newspaper in between the gears, bolt the engine down and turn the gear to remove the paper. If it's too loose it'll strip all the teeth and if it's too tight it'll wear it down too quickly.
