RE: 4-link monsters
You wont find too many people here in the MT section that have 4-link monsters, but here's mine.
I need to get some different wheels for it, the black ones keep getting chewed up and require re painting (I just use a paint marker to touch them up).
I wish there was a way to mount the body lower (or a simular body with lower sides) but I can;t really do anything about that because the tires will rub on it. Looks better with my Masher style tires though, they are a bit taller than the Baja's.

RE: 4-link monsters
More pictures of mine....
These are old, I don't use that body anymore, now I am using the one with lightning and "The Ripper" on it.
The little truck is also a 4-link MT, but it's like 1/12th scale (sold as 1/18th but it's much bigger than a 1/18th). It's not a very good truck (handles for crap), but it's fun to run around in the garage or living room. I know one thing, it's the most powerfull thing I have I've seen, barely blip the throttle and will do a complete backflip, it will even do wheelies in reverse.

RE: 4-link monsters
4 links are just harder to get and not many are made, 4 links are crawlers, 4 links have massive suspension articulation, they arent speed demons becuase they are low geared for crawling, my x factor was 379 plus about 150 in mods
the mad force isnt made anymore, the mad force used to be around 379 or more but they stopped making them about 6 months ago

RE: 4-link monsters
Most 4-link MT's are custom built using Clodbuster, Juggernaut, TXT, or TLT axles. There are only a few MT's that come stock with 4-link suspension, the TXT, TLT, and X-factor are the only ones I know of.
The price depends alot on what you use to build one, my big one cost around $600 not including the electronics, and I'm still working on it.
Ripper Pro racing chassis - $300
Used Clod axles - $90
Inet knock off's - $15
Inet upper link mounts - $25
TTR Eliminator steering system - $40
TTR bumper - $25 or so
XTR carbon fiber axle braces - $15 or so
Body - $25
Tire's - $30
Wheels - $20 or so
Shocks - $40
Antenna mount - $5
etc.
It all adds up really quick.

The 4 link truck I'm building right now is a clod axled truck with a scratch built tube frame I have been working on. I dont get into the crawling thing so I will be building mine with bashing/speed in mind. I have a SR with 3300 matched GP's and I'll be using some low turn (most likely 11t speed gem) motors. So it should have some pretty good speed to it.
Still working on the chassis right now but heres a pic of it so far.

RE: 4-link monsters
you can make a pile of **** go 60mph but how will it handle, what i said is its not practical because they handle eratically at 40 mph, my x factor is im possible to drive at top speed without the sway bars attached and slicks and stiffer springs

RE: 4-link monsters
I also had an x factor and its not becasue its a 4 link that it handles poorly. Mostly its due to the poor location of the CG on the truck, 4-links do not make a car unstable at high speeds. Most of your high performance (1:1) cars & trucks use ethier a 4 link or a 3 link with a panhard bar to locate the axles. I use a Chris alston 4-link set up on my (1:1) drag car and its all in the tuning of the shocks and distribution of weight that makes the difference.

RE: 4-link monsters
yeah the x factor is kind of poorly deisghned, all of the weight lies on the right rear, resulting in the front lef twheel always wanting to pop up, plus its very weak on the connecting rods, the clutch also sucks ass, so does the pull start on all xtm cars, its a good reliable engine, and its a bling ride but its mostly for show,
i tell you what, if the differential set screw comes out 1 more time, im gonna ****in lose my mind and throw this thing in the trash

RE: 4-link monsters
I didnt have a problem with the diff screw on mine when I had it, might have just been lucky though.
Have you tried a heavier weight oil in the shocks to help the handling yet? I tried the heavier springs like you have done and I didnt really notice that helping much, but then I put some 55wt oil in the shocks and that really seemed to help the handling at speed. It took alot of the body roll out of it. The stock tires dont help much ethier, they are pretty hard and no inserts. Although I had the X factor #1 so I'm not sure if you have the #2 then maybe they changed the tires and added inserts?
Give some 55wt oil a try though and see if you like the handling better, it seemed to help mine alot.
It is a cool truck though, I enjoyed mine when I had it.

RE: 4-link monsters
i have the x factor 2, ive seen the x factor 1 in person and its just a frekin piece of crap, my x factor has the softer springs and all and it helps alot but its still difficult,
everything goers wrong on this truck, i bought it used so you can imagine, the guy i bought it from was obviously inexperienced, he told me it was barely used, i way overpayed for it but i wanted one so bad and couldnt wait to buy new, i payed 295 shipped for it, and that was about 1 month ago, i still havent gotten to drive it on dirt yet becuase a new problem happens everytime i start it, right now its the 1 way bearing and the clutch going out, ridiculous cause ive now got over 450 in it to replace all the hidden crap he broke

The X-Factor is not a poorly designed truck.
The reason the front wheel comes off of the ground under hard acceleration is due to the rotational stress from the drive line. Try a heavier spring on that side to help prevent it.
The stock clutch is fine for most purposes upgrade to a 3 shoe aluminum one when it burns out.
Having the slipper clutch adjusted correctly will help with the lifting of the tire and the life of the clutch.
There are numerous posts on how to fix the ring gear diff screw. If you are having a problem with the dog bone screws try using lock tight.
I have never had a problem with the one way bearing or the pull start. If there was a weakness in that design one would assume that after 8 gallons of fuel it would show up.
The instructions clearly state that handling will be compromised with the sway bars removed.
Here is a link to a X-Factor specific forum that will help with allot of your problems

The only parts that have failed on my X-Factor were my own fault.

RE: 4-link monsters
Just standard Futaba servo's, I think the front one might be a high torque one but I don't remember if it is for sure.
Not the best, but the tires/wheels on it are relatively light (in comparison to similarly sized tires/wheels) so they get the job done just fine.

RE: 4-link monsters
I bought my truck new so I haven't had to fix any prior damage. I have purchased one truck used and went through some of the same problems you are going through which is why I only buy used trucks for parts. If I plan on getting a truck to run I will only buy new or scratch build with new components.

RE: 4-link monsters
yeah, after all this time wanting a car to just be able to drive daily ive finally got one, trust me man its a long story, ive been through 12 different used cars that i bought and they were all major problems, i dumped alot of money in them and then sold them when there was another little problem to keep me from running, now ive got the x factor dialed in almost perfect and ive realized i like working on rc cars and figuring out what the hell is wrong with them more than i like driving them, im 15 now and it all started hwen i was 10, my parents hav ealways hated this hobby and they have never bought me even 1 rc car, they refuse to, i tpissed me off so much that i nevere gave up on this hobby no matter how frustrated i got jsut to piss them off,
but in all this ive owned a rs4 sport, a kyosho ultmia st ep, a ultima st nt, a trinity reflex nt, a duratrax evader ep st, 2 tamiya hummers, a tamiya pajero, a tamiya touareg, a duratrax street force(this car was a problem no matter how long you worked on it, and i acutally got his one new, it was my only new rc car ever), a tc3 nt, and of course my x-factor, every single one of them was a problem and a huge investment, and only the tamiyas were daily drivers and very frekin reliable,
